APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Friday March 4, 2005 (MJD 53434) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- John Barentine Mike Harvanek Visitors: Scot Kleinman Atsuko Nitta Craig Loomis ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Unsettled weather all night long. Got partial (but unusable) signal on one plate (2074), collected spectro dark frames to complete the March spectro monthly checkout, and road-tested a new IOP version related to PR 6332. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon --------- We are Howardless this p.m. for afternoon checkout. After issuing a goStare through SOPGUI to take a bias with the spectrographs, we lost contact with the instrument (see Problems section). We got some warnings in SoS about the arcs and flats taken during the spectro focus check (again, see Problems). The rest of checkout proceeded without problems. Night ----- We elected to open at 02:45Z as the clouds had thinned sufficiently and there was no apparent threat on radar, though we didn't expect much in the way of efficiency. We had a windscreen touch in altitude at 02:43Z during opening. 03:00Z Cart 3, Plate 2074 (seguefaint105). Guide stars on goToField. We start with a (S/N)^2 of 33 on this plate. The first exposure gave us a minimum (S/N)^2 of only 2.0 on r1. We did another 1200s exposure with similar results. Hoping the conditions would improve, we remained open but did not take additional science exposures while waiting. Conditions deteriorated after that and we closed at 04:30Z. 05:20Z We used the downtime as an opportunity to get spectro darks. This was a redo of the dark frame analysis from the current dark run's spectro monthly checkout (the original dark frames had uncertain exposure times due to problems with the new specmech code.) This required getting data in both imaging stare and drift mode, as well as spectro data to check that the correct number of imaging area and overscan lines was being reported. Gathering the data was straightforward with one exception. We got the following error message on issuing a goDrift: im> goDrift -bias camera not setup for drifting, performing an initData statusEntry daqDrifting on node id1 is not 1 but 0 DA not setup for drifting, performing an initData 2005-03-05 08:43:39Z: Beginning data taking The drift happened anyway, but we didn't get the expected "LINES =" parameter returned from a "cc imstat". PHASEMICRO BUSY USR1 0 USR2 -1 USR3 0 For both the imager stare and spectro data, "LINES = 2070 # PER FRAME" from the requested "cc imstat" after each frame read out. Checking the "ccdRowVis" and "ccdRowOscn" commands from the *OP command lines, as suggested in the directions we were given, returned nothing. We checked syntax but got little help from the command line. We could not determine the dimensions of the spectro frames from the headers. However, the imaging data headers contained the information we needed. We checked the data out of the pool with the getFrame command in IOP, then looked at the headers at the cards CCDSECL and OVERSECL (the sections containing the visible imaiging area and the overscan regions, respectively). We get: for the goStare CCDSECL = [21:1064,1:1361] OVERSECL = [1:20,1:1361] for the goDrift CCDSECL = [21:1064,1:1361] OVERSECL = [1:20,1:2069] From this we conclude: 1) The driftscan frames still have 1361 lines 2) The overscan seems to be only 20 columns wide as opposed to the expected 21 column. 3) Something seems to be wrong with the goDrift command (even though it yields an otherwise "correct" driftscan). Clouds cleared off almost completely toward 11:00Z and we re-opened. 11:05Z Cart 8, Plate 1670 (tile 1175, chunk85). We had a little difficulty with the gotoField as the azimuth axis aborted twice and we had to issue axis init commands three times before it would move. Just as soon as we set up on this field the clouds rolled in again immediately. At 11:35Z, as we agreed to close, the rain sensor triggered. Light snow was falling outside. We raced down to the telescope and put the enclosure on as quickly as possible, but by that time there were already water spots on the mirror. The two exposures on Cart 3 from early in the night were not of survey-quality (S/N)^2, so endNight was run on the cloudy night tapes and rejoiced. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5173 00:38Z 00:53Z 100 O -118.28 -114.55 39 ignore (tagged "bias" by mistake) 5175 08:43Z 08:48Z 100 O 3.24 4.46 20 ignore ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n): yes QA Procedures Done (y/n): yes UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 31189, plate -9999 ------- 00:10 31189 0.0 bias 00:39 31190 0.0 bias ----- sequence 31191, plate 2074 ------- 00:57 31191 10.0 flat 01:00 31192 2.0 arc 01:08 31193 2.1 arc 01:11 31194 2.1 arc 03:12 31195 10.0 flat 03:15 31196 2.0 arc 03:40 31197 1200.1 target 3.7 2.0 4.6 2.8 04:03 31198 1200.1 target 3.3 1.8 4.1 2.7 05:39 31199 1200.0 dark 05:57 31200 1200.0 dark 06:15 31201 1200.0 dark ----- sequence 31202, plate -9999 ------- 08:55 31202 0.0 bias ----- sequence 31203, plate 2074 ------- 10:37 31203 0.0 bias ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 03:19Z 3 2074 31.52 -0.0021 73.22 0.0031 207.50 0.0147 1.000080 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL Stays: JL ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 00:22Z 3 0 1.00009 -889 -58 160 121 30.1 2.2 0 227 00:45Z 3 2074 1.00009 -889 -58 160 121 30.1 1.8 7 131 03:19Z 3 2074 1.00008 -790 622 150 31 73.2 1.4 19 128 1.4 ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 23:57Z 37 18 3 211 (SSW) 278 - MstlyCldy 00:29Z 35 18 0 168 (SSE) 281 - MstlyCldy 01:00Z 35 18 12 127 (SE) 263 - MstlyCldy 01:30Z 34 15 13 151 (SSE) 294 - MstlyCldy 02:02Z 34 11 14 142 (SE) 276 - MstlyCldy 02:34Z 35 13 12 168 (SSE) 261 - PtlyCldy 03:06Z 34 13 18 140 (SE) 280 - MstlyClr 03:38Z 34 15 18 123 (ESE) 284 - MstlyClr 04:10Z 33 17 18 109 (ESE) 264 - PtlyCldy 04:42Z 33 18 19 123 (ESE) 276 - MstlyCldy 05:14Z 33 18 17 117 (ESE) 291 - MstlyCldy 05:47Z 33 18 25 127 (SE) 278 - MstlyCldy 06:19Z 34 16 20 134 (SE) 321 - MstlyCldy 06:51Z 35 15 20 142 (SE) 354 - MstlyCldy 07:24Z 35 17 18 160 (SSE) 303 - MstlyCldy 07:56Z 35 18 15 172 (S) 406 - MstlyCldy 08:28Z 36 18 10 175 (S) 504 - MstlyCldy 09:00Z 36 20 13 180 (S) 530 - MstlyCldy 09:32Z 35 20 13 141 (SE) 526 - MstlyCldy 10:05Z 34 20 12 157 (SSE) 451 - MstlyCldy 10:37Z 32 20 11 130 (SE) 460 - MstlyCldy 11:07Z 34 20 13 150 (SSE) 525 - PtlyCldy 11:37Z 33 21 11 164 (SSE) 517 - MstlyCldy 12:07Z 34 22 10 156 (SSE) 496 - MstlyCldy ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- 00:30Z Fans on, louvers open 01:45Z Doors cracked 02:45Z Enclosure off 04:30Z Enclosure on, doors cracked, fans left on 11:00Z Enclosure off 11:40Z Enclosure on Telescope parked at 121,30 with Cart 8 (Plate 1670) mounted Spectro autofill reconnected Counterweights at 160 No interlocks bypassed Dewar weights at 12:10Z Imager: 228lbs 18psi Spectro: 300lbs 24psi ---=== SOFTWARE USED ===--- IOP/SOP: v3_143_0a Watcher: v2_30_0 MCP: v5_26_0 TPM: tpm_v2_47_0 AstroDa: v14_47 TCC: TCC 2.7.2.1 August 6 2004 sdssProcedures: v1_98 SoS: v4_10_7 hoggPT: v1_6_9 plate-mapper: v4_3_1 ---=== MIRROR NUMBERS ===--- PRIMARY: -------- Scale: 1.000000 MIGS TONIGHT NOMINAL Axial A 0.5760 0.5770 Axial B 0.5880 0.5880 Axial C 0.9440 0.9460 Trans D -8.2000 -8.1960 Lateral E 10.0584 10.0330 Lateral F 11.6205 11.5951 GALILS Commanded: 4300. -1900. 2850. -13300. -7600. -7650. We followed the Folklore procedure under "Observing-Misc" to logout the ports using the IOP command ftelnetLogoutPort. That didn't work. We tried again, logging out both the sp1 and sp2 ports, as well as sp1_mech and sp2_mech. At that point, we got the spectrographs back. SoS Warnings During Checkout ---------------------------- SoS gave the following warning during the afternoon spectro focus check: sdR-b2-00031192.fit: WARNING: All flat fibers have been rejected! sdR-b2-00031193.fit: WARNING: All flat fibers have been rejected! sdR-b2-00031194.fit: WARNING: All flat fibers have been rejected! (Note that 31194 was a Hartmann arc) We visually inspected the frames and ran apo_plotarc on the arcs (as well as some arcs declared 'good' last night). All looks well. The flats also appear to be okay in terms of counts, curvature, etc.
