APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Thursday April 7, 2005 (MJD 53468) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Jurek Krzesinski John Barentine ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Cloudy most of the night. We finished three plates (2113, 1766, 2109) and obtained signal on a fourth (2099). ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon checkout: ------------------ The imager ion pump presure was fluctuating today reaching at maximum 5.33 mtorr. Host rebooted, DA ok, telescope ready. We left the spectrographs collimated for the temperature <5C (Mike set them yesterday that way). Today's mirrors temperature is about 9 C and ambient temperature ~7 C, dropping. Night: ------ Open at 01:35Z in twilight to cool. 03:05Z Cart 1 Plate 2113 (tile 1519, chunk100). Stars on gotoField. We had some SoS warnings on the first set of preCalibs taken which seemed related to the temperature difference between ambient and where the spectro focus was set yesterday (the airTemp really didn't come down much after sunset). Jurek did mech piston commands of the order 2000 steps; the next set of preCalibs still gave yellows in SoS, so we made another piston move for a total of 4000 steps. We also note bad results for NLAMPS on r2, suggesting the recurrent problem involving the arc lamps. Finally, on the third arc we took, we got NLAMPS=38 for r2. We started science while the third arc was reading out, planning on a postCalib if that third arc were no good. We finished the plate in three exposures of 900, 1200 and 1200 s, respectively, and did a postCalib before moving on. 04:27Z Cart 4 Plate 1766 (tile 1271, chunk92). Stars on gotoField. NLAMPS remained bad at 30 on r2 for the preCalib. We declared that arc bad, took one science exposure and took a separate arc (not a scripted preCalib). Finished the plate in three exposures of 900, 900 and 600 s, respectively. 05:40Z Cart 3 Plate 2109 (tile 1515, chunk100). Stars on gotoField. From here on, we did all our calibrations as flats and arcs separately rather than together (but still in immediate succession). We had clouds throughout most of this plate but got better (S/N)^2 than expected, so we backed off the final exposure time. Finished the plate in three exposures of 2 x 1200 s and 900 s. 07:05Z Cart 2 Plate 2105 (tile 1511, chunk100). No stars on gotoField. Did an fk5InFiber that didn't work. Ran three laps of spiralPattern with no luck. Tried the usual tricks of clearing offsets, etc., without success. Given the position of this field on the sky at the time we were attempting to observe it, we decided to just switch to another cartridge. 07:35Z Cart 5 Plate 2099 (tile 1505, chunk100). No stars on gotoField or fk5InFiber, but found with spiralPattern. Clouds were thickening as we set up on this field. We got partway through one science exposure and then had to abort it because of the thickness of the clouds. The plate expired before conditions improved, so we moved on to... 09:17Z Cart 7 Plate 1839 (tile 1361, chunk95). Stars on gotoField (at last...) However, clouds were too thick to do much with for the moment. We gave up as twilight began and the sky was as soupy as ever. endNight rejoiced. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5234 00:20Z 00:45Z 100 O -89.42 -83.22 55 ignore ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n): yes QA Procedures Done (y/n): yes UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 31835, plate -9999 ------- 00:14 31835 0.0 bias ----- sequence 31836, plate 1400 ------- 00:46 31836 0.0 bias 00:50 31837 10.0 flat 00:53 31838 2.0 arc ----- sequence 31839, plate 2113 ------- 19.2 16.0 25.3 18.8 DONE 02:39 31839 10.0 flat 02:42 31840 2.0 arc 02:50 31841 10.0 flat 02:53 31842 2.0 arc 03:05 31843 10.0 flat 03:08 31844 2.0 arc 03:28 31845 900.1 target 03:51 31846 1200.1 target 04:14 31847 1200.1 target 04:18 31848 10.0 flat 04:20 31849 2.0 arc ----- sequence 31850, plate 1766 ------- 16.1 15.6 16.4 15.9 DONE 04:37 31850 10.0 flat 04:39 31851 2.0 arc 04:58 31852 900.1 target 05:01 31853 2.0 arc 05:19 31854 900.1 target 05:33 31855 600.1 target ----- sequence 31856, plate 2109 ------- 18.3 15.7 16.9 17.1 DONE 05:48 31856 10.0 flat 05:51 31857 2.0 arc 06:17 31858 1200.1 target 06:40 31859 1200.1 target 06:58 31860 900.1 target ----- sequence 31861, plate 2099 ------- 5.7 5.6 6.0 6.2 07:50 31861 2.0 arc 07:53 31862 10.0 flat 08:18 31863 1200.2 target ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 03:51Z 1 2113 105.28 0.0019 70.07 0.0041 -88.39 -0.0095 1.000320 05:04Z 4 1766 45.91 -0.0010 66.06 0.0049 218.58 0.0100 1.000070 06:00Z 3 2109 95.88 -0.0004 70.69 0.0068 263.25 0.0167 1.000300 08:21Z 5 2099 257.40 0.0039 59.36 0.0040 98.08 -0.0064 1.000170 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL8435 Stays: JL8436 ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 03:51Z 1 2113 1.00032 -3159 -1364 120 105 70.2 7.6 17 178 -- 2.7 05:04Z 4 1766 1.00007 -691 596 30 46 66.1 7.8 15 192 -- 1.7 06:01Z 3 2109 1.00030 -2961 -1302 20 96 70.7 7.2 12 183 -- 1.7 08:21Z 5 2099 1.00017 -1678 -205 30 257 59.3 7.5 9 178 -- 2.1 ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 00:07Z 49 14 13 183 (S) 1066 - MstlyCldy 00:39Z 46 12 11 156 (SSE) 1103 - MstlyCldy 01:11Z 44 13 16 142 (SE) 1078 - MstlyCldy 01:43Z 43 13 14 171 (S) 1048 - MstlyCldy 02:18Z 44 15 17 175 (S) 1188 - MstlyCldy 02:48Z 45 15 18 174 (S) 1143 - MstlyCldy 03:21Z 45 15 15 178 (S) 1135 - PtlyCldy 03:51Z 45 14 17 177 (S) 1201 - PtlyCldy 04:21Z 46 14 14 180 (S) 1269 - MstlyClr 04:52Z 45 13 14 179 (S) 1210 - MstlyClr 05:22Z 41 13 11 177 (S) 1201 - PtlyCldy 05:54Z 44 12 15 179 (S) 1265 - PtlyCldy 06:26Z 45 15 14 180 (S) 1196 - PtlyCldy 06:59Z 43 15 6 164 (SSE) 1236 - MstlyCldy 07:31Z 45 15 14 174 (S) 1286 - MstlyCldy 08:02Z 43 15 8 140 (SE) 1254 - MstlyCldy 08:35Z 44 14 9 181 (S) 1241 - MstlyCldy 09:08Z 46 14 8 180 (S) 1260 - Overcast 09:39Z 46 15 12 169 (S) 1293 - Overcast 10:11Z 46 14 17 180 (S) 1466 - Overcast 10:44Z 47 15 21 191 (S) 1570 - Overcast 11:16Z 46 15 24 184 (S) 1806 - Overcast ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- 00:40Z Fans on.
