APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Friday April 8, 2005 (MJD 53469) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Jurek Krzesinski John Barentine Mike Harvanek (swing) Jon Brinkman on phone, Craig Loomis on phone. Craig won!!!! why? -> we woke him later in the night than Jon :). ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- We finished 2 plates: 2099, 1988, then we took some imaging data: 20 S 26 - 48 including ramps in good and acceptable seeing conditions. Problems: MCP had to be rebooted. see the log. id2-2 got an error and was switched off. Criag will copy the data from id2-1 onto another tape at the morning. see the log. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: ---------- Based on the temperatures forecast for tonight, no spectro collimation adjustments were performed. Numbers are in the Problems section. High dust counts prevented early ventilation. No problems to report. Night: ------ 04:00Z cart 5 plt 2099 on the telescope. No guide star, no fk5 star. Spiral pattern with one overlap and nothing. Then we applied -20" in RA and found fk5 star (the magical offset used yesterday to find guide stars on one of the plates). Seeing variable. First calibration and - spectrographs are out of foucs. We mechpistoned them +2000. This happens too often lately (the spectrograph predicted and actual temperature difference was less than 2C); maybe we shoud collimate spectrographs for the ambient temperature like in the past year, since we had then less efficiency hits, or just compensate less for predicted "night - afternoon temperature" say, only 2C for this time of the year? That is only a suggestion, to keep in mind that night people have more problems with the spectrographs :). Anyway, pistoning the collimator +2000 was still not enough; the xsigma and wsigma were yellow (mirror temperatrure is 7C ambient 6.3C). That's enough however to proceed with observations. plate done. SOS warning: Max sky-residual. 05:35Z cart 1 plt 1988, fk5 used. Plate done. Seeing on the last plate was below 1.5" we decided to swap to imaging. 07:00Z Imager mounted. As soon as we were trying to move the telescope, we've seen the tcc error: axis init 0 0 I Modu="axe_o_Init"; Text="locking ports: Az , Alt, Rot" 0 0 I Modu="axe_o_Init"; Text="initializing: Az , Alt, Rot" 0 0 F Modu="prt_Read"; Text="read timed out on port LTA19:" 0 0 F Modu="prt_Read"; Text="read timed out on port LTA19:" 0 0 F Modu="prt_Read"; Text="read timed out on port LTA19:" 0 0 W Modu="axe_o_Init"; Text="fast init failed; will try to resynch: Az , Alt, Rot" 0 0 I Modu="axe_o_Init"; Text="resynchronizing I/O stream for: Az , Alt, Rot" 0 0 I Modu="axe_o_Init"; Text="initializing: Az , Alt, Rot" 0 0 F Modu="prt_Read"; Text="read timed out on port LTA19:" 0 0 I Modu="exe_BrdTelPos"; Text="7148950 packets sent successfully" It looked like tcc or MCP needed rebooting. We called Jon B. To be sure that this is the case. He suggested that we reboot only mcp, so we did. Then on a test slew the telescope gathered all fiducials but wasn't happy with alt (too large to correct error). We forced fiducails in alt, slew the telescope again and everything was fine. On scanstripe we cleared the spectro lefover offsets, then noticed, that xbore offset was properly applied. 07:25Z On stripe 20 S (we started with lambda 21). In good seeing since the beginning. Run 5237, rot error 0.044 too big (also nuErr -8.2"), we corrected both in the same time. Frame 41 lambda 26.2 beginning of the ramp, in focus, seeing good. We are in spec :). Archiver error we ignored: poolNRGangTrim. Then later we've got id2 problem: dsc E trcErr dscArch CheckPrevOp: rstatus = 0x800140fc, drive 2 (dsc_E_trcErr dscArch_CheckPrevOp: rstatus = 0x800140fc, drive 2 : 2005-04-09 08:11:54Z ) archUseDrv (drive 2: archUseDrv is 0: 2005-04-09 08:12:06Z) archLastErr-2 (Drive 2 error: Medium Error: Write Error dsc E archShutDown2 Archiver shutting down second drive (dsc_E_archShutDown2 Archiver shutting down second drive : 2005-04-09 08:11:54Z) : isc=81: 2005-04-09 08:12:06Z ) dsc E archWrFail Tape write error while archiving frame 5237 83.32 (dsc_E_archWrFail Tape write error while archiving frame 5237 83.32 : 2005-04-09 08:11:54Z ) dsc I archFailMsg Rimfire failure ID = 2 Status = 0xf10c0300 0x1194081 (dsc_I_archFailMsg Rimfire failure ID = 2 Status = 0xf10c0300 0x1194081 : 2005-04-09 08:11:54Z ) archDrvSts (drive 2: Error: 2005-04-09 08:12:06Z) Ok. Since we lost id2-2, we decided to call Criag, confirm, that we can copy id2-1 into a second tape and we continued with imaging. 09:04Z Seeing got into acceptable region at frame ~120. 09:27Z Seeing bad since frame 189, lambda 48 (first yellow frame on the seeing plot). The trend in this seeing conditions is bad, the seeing is getting worse. Instead of drifting further and waiting for the seeing to improve, we stopped the drift and started bias on the telescope. Meanwhile we were waching our LOVELY DIMM :) - it's a first time it pays off (for John and Jurek at least), and watching for seeing to stabilize, cool! 09:35Z Run 5238 - bias on the telescope. Seeing seems to get better, we scanStriped to lambda 43, ended the bias drift, then started the goDrift. DIMM shows a good seeing, 3.5m got very bad seeing. hmmm. 09:52Z Run 5239, stripe 20 S. Nope - the seeing is bad as 3.5m observers said, DIMM hower shows the average seeing about 1". From the other hand, our pointing was perfect with offsets left from the previous scan. The drift was stopped. 10:07Z Switching to spectroscopy. On go to field we forgot to setup instrument to spectro and got guider flat error: flat exposure too faint. But after setting instrument to spectro everything was fine. 10:30Z Cart 9 plt 1400. No fk5 star found. SpiralPattern used. Fk5 found with offsets RA:10", DEC:-10", but we found out that the rotator showed at the same time too large to correct error, which we fixed. Plate not done (we missed it just a few tens of s/n grrr, but we were 20 minutes in the twilight). NOTE: We didn't change the collimator position since the beginning of the night and got very good flat and arc exposures (all in black) for the ambinet temp: 2.6C (mirrors are in equilibrum). endNight is running. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5235 23:57Z 00:16Z 100 O -94.24 -89.48 46 ignore 5237 07:22Z 09:33Z 20 S 21.17 53.99 233 science 5238 09:36Z 09:55Z 100 O 50.88 55.84 46 bias 5239 09:57Z 10:08Z 20 S 43.89 46.68 31 science ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- Run 5237, stripe 20 S.
