APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Friday April 15, 2005 (MJD 53476) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Atsuko Nitta Scot Kleinman Mike Harvanek (swing) Visitors: Steph Snedden Jurek Krzesinski Craig Loomis (still at work at 3am) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Shakeup then science. ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- o completed imager shakeup checkout. o 3 Plates done despite of couple problems (with a couple questions on a few exposures- -please see Log section **** marks o saoDisplay hung the sop session that was taking data. When we quit saoDisplay, sop came back to life. o Landru kicked us off whlie observing. o ion pump pressure critical error was triggered. But after that, the ion pump pressures stayed between 0.12 -0.2 microtorr. We have a grinder in the ops kitchen again. Thank you Bruce for the donation. The ginder has been tested by Atsuko who made Atsukona espresso and tasted by Craig, Dave and Atsuko. We agree that the grinder is in good working order. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: ---------- Based on temperatures forecast for tonight, no spectro collimation adjustments were made. Numbers are in the Problems section. During checkout, the manipulator arm and the cartridge lift both failed to operate. Jon Brinkmann investigated and found that the rope hanging just inside the left side of the roll up door was blowing in the wind and breaking the light curtain causing both the arm and the lift to fail. Perhaps this rope could/should be tied back or down? Rising humidity prevented early ventilation. Nothing else to report. Night: ------ zzzzz <--- Mike abandoned us here. We put the imager on the telescope to do imager calibrations in the dark enclosure after sunset. Atsuko tried Bruce's older grinder he donated to us. It made good gounds for a good cup of Atsukona espresso. (Craig and Dave can testify for how well the grinder worked via the taste of the espresso.) The humidity is climbing up now close to 3C differential. So we wait. Mike reports lightening to the north-east. 05:45Z The humidity is low enough (dew point diff=6C), so we open. Cart 7 Plate 2006 -------------------- No stars or fk5 on slew. The fk5 was found at RA=-20". We hit the zone of avoidance while we setup (after we found our guide stars). So we wait a bit. After 15min, we tried looking for our guide stars again, but they were not where they were. So we had to re-find the fk5 star which took a bit. 07:40Z Scot's SOP session seems to have hung. There is no exposure that read out (we should have had 32113 readout by now). Looking at the time stamp of the guide images, 07:34Z The last guider frame was readout. Scot decides to close his sop session and restart. when the saoDisplay showing the guider image was closed, the spectro exposures started to read out! Scot restarted the saoDisplay by: startMon showGuiderFrame and took a guider frame. It looks like we are guiding fine. We resume normal observing. Checking the header of 32113, we note that: EXPTIME = 1000s as we specified. DARKTIME=1659 (TAI-END)-(TAI-BEG)=1659 We are not sure if this means the shutter was open for 1000s or if the shutter was open for 1659s. We meant this exposure to have the shutter open for 1000s. SoS does not flag anything wrong with this exposure. **** (Obviously, EXPTIME and DARKTIME are what we expect given the circumstances. Is TAI-END and TAI-BEG supposed to bracket the DARKTIME?) postCalib done following SoS recommendation. Although the sky looks clear and moon about to set, the cloud camera tells us that there is a structure in the sky making it non-photometric. It looks a bit hazy outside towards ELP and Holloman. Cart 5 Plate 2033 ------------------- guide stars on gotoField. 08:47Z Landru suddenly went BLANK. A second later, the login prompt came up. We were doing the first science exposure for this plate when this happened. We said "hmmmm" and "Craig". Craig was still working in the computer room (and it is 3am!) so we let him know that Landru misbehaved. Under Craig's supervision, we try to recover. When Scot (driver) logged back on to landru, he tried to readout the exposure, but SOP said there was no exposure in progress. We were also no longer guiding. Craig advised us to do "show users" which not only shows all the users, but get rid of all bad users, like all the TCC connections Scot had before Landru went "puff". We then went to find the folklore under spectro observing ("Forcing spectro CCDs to readout") to handle this situation: loadCart 5 2033 set scanType(flavor) 'science' set scanType(plateId) 2033 endStare -read -force and successfully read out the exposure (32119). We re-slewed to the field and got new guider flat before starting a new science exposure. **** The header of this exposure is not quite right. The TAI-BEG, TAI-END, DARK-TIME, SECFOCUS are definitely not right. The EXPTIME is what we asked for. Hopefully the shutter opened and closed as asked and the exposure time is truly 1000s. TAI-BEG = 3.50670680100000E+09 / Exposure Start Time TAI-END = 4.62035863600000E+09 / Exposure End Time EXPTIME = 1.00010000000000E+03 / Exposure time. (seconds) DARKTIME= -9.9990000000000E+03 / Time between flush charge and read-ou SECFOCUS= -9.9990000000000E+03 / Secondary Mirror Position as reported We will not count this exposure as valid and take extra exposure. while dealing with above, we got attacked by clouds. SoS never reduced 32199 frames. **** During 32120, the clouds thickened. We noted during 32120 that we forgot to take a -init bias in the new sop session. So it is possible that 32120 is also not good. SoS successfully reduced 32120 and did not give us say they were bad. Visual check of the frames, apoplotsky, or plotting several spectra did not show any signs that anything is wrong with this exposure either. It looks like all is well. Phew. Exp 32121 is a bias with "-init" to make sure SOP is happy. Our next event is: ion pump pr (1.76 : 2005-04-16 09:56:17Z) After the above, manual imstat showed ION_PUMP_PR 0.12 to 0.2. We finished this plate with 3 exposures, 32120, 32122, 32123. I noticed that one of my iop session has core dumped with the following message. From the prompt after the core dump, this happened at 09:54Z. im> /p/astroda/v14_47/bin/dscRun[429]: 21417 Memory fault(coredump) ~ Host[3:54] Cart 9 Plate 1574 ------------------- guide stars on gotoField. We have signal on this plate from last night. The first 1200s exposure (32126) finished this plate, but we got another 1200s exposures since we had only 15 min or so before twilight started. 11:20Z Close endNight ran successfully. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5250 23:53Z 00:07Z 100 O -88.33 -84.71 38 ignore 5251 01:56Z 02:15Z 100 O -57.55 -52.67 46 bias 5252 02:33Z 02:53Z 100 O -48.20 -43.24 47 calibration ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n):y QA Procedures Done (y/n):y UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 32104, plate 1574 ------- 00:13 32104 10.0 flat collimation check 00:15 32105 2.0 arc collimation check 00:18 32106 2.1 arc collimation check 00:21 32107 2.1 arc collimation check ----- sequence 32108, plate -9999 ------- 00:29 32108 0.0 bias 00:39 32109 0.0 bias ----- sequence 32110, plate 2006 ------- DONE 06:51 32110 10.0 flat 06:55 32111 2.0 arc 07:17 32112 1100.1 target 07:47 32113 1000.1 target ---- saoDisplay hung during this exposure. 08:09 32114 1000.2 target 08:14 32115 10.0 flat 08:17 32116 2.0 arc ----- sequence 32117, plate 2033 ------- 08:30 32117 10.0 flat 08:33 32118 2.0 arc ----- sequence 32119, plate 2033 ------- DONE 08:58 32119 1000.1 target ----- Landru went PUFF during this exposure.
