APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Monday April 18, 2005 (MJD 53479) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- John Barentine Mike Harvanek (swing) The ET Crew: Jian Ge (UF) Julian Van Eyken (UF) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- ET Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Collected signal on three regular ET plates (8012-8014) and one mixed SDSS/ET plate (8015). Successfully demonstrated the "piggybacking" of ET observations onto SDSS spetctrographic operations. Daystaff may want to consider CO2 cleaning the mirrors, as dust counts were ~2500-2900 throughout the time we were open tonight. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon --------- ET setup and then dust prevented early ventilation. Based on temperatures forecast for tonight, spectro collimation was not adjusted. Numbers are in the Problems section. Night ----- Open at 04:40Z when it was clear the dust levels were stable (yet a little high). 05:10Z Cart 5 Plate 8012. No stars on gotoField with last night's offsets still sticky. Cleared the offsets and went back to the field, but found nothing. Did an fk5InFiber number 10 and got a dim glow. Offsets totalling A=+14 centered the fk5 star. Focus for this plate was WAY off from what we expected based on the ambient temperature; best focus was at about +445, seeing around 1.3 arcsec. Had no stars at all in guide fibers 8 and 11, so I disabled them for guiding. Jian did two 1800 s exposures on this plate and reported good signal. 06:55Z Cart 6 Plate 8011. Again, no guide stars on gotoField with offsets from last plate sticky. Cleared the offsets and went back to the field. Nothing. fk5InFiber 10 gave nothing either, not even a glow. I resorted to spiralPattern which did find the star, after additional offsets of A=+8. Howeverm Jian thinks that the replugging of this plate on Monday was incorrect, assigning fiber 12 to hole 25 instead of fiber 11. Hole 25 is their reference star, making this plate unusable tonight. The pluggers will be alerted that he would like to meet with them during the day on Tuesday to verify the fiber/hole assignments for all of the ET plates. 07:55Z Cart 8 Plate 8013. Guide stars on gotoField (an A=-5 offset centered them), with sticky offsets from the last plate. Jian did 2 exposures of 1800 s each here. 09:30Z Cart 4 Plate 8014. Guide stars on gotoField keeping the previous plate's offsets. No additional offsetting was necessary once the guider was started. Focus continued to slide, this time best near 600. 2 exposures of a half-hour each here. 11:05Z Cart 9 Plate 8015 (mixed SDSS/ET plate). GSOGOTF w/ last plate's offsets still sticky. Focus down to ~425; we had been drifting quite a bit in the previous couple of hours. We obtained a range of exposure times on this plate with the SDSS spectrographs to check for signal variation in hopes of avoiding saturation on these (relatively) bright stars. Exposure times ranged from 300 s to 60 s. At the end, well into twilight, we took a postCalib as a reference for the data. Closed up at 12:20Z endNight was run on the cloudy night tapes and rejoiced. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n): yes QA Procedures Done (y/n): n/a UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 32129, plate -9999 ------- 23:53 32129 0.0 bias 00:04 32130 0.0 bias 02:27 32131 0.0 bias ----- sequence 32132, plate 8015 ------- 11:29 32132 300.2 target 11:35 32133 173.6 target 11:41 32134 180.1 target 11:45 32135 120.1 target 11:49 32136 60.1 target 11:53 32137 60.1 target 11:56 32138 10.0 flat 11:58 32139 2.0 arc ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 07:24Z 6 8011 222.44 0.0021 45.61 0.0054 83.42 -0.0051 1.000410 08:23Z 8 8013 -11.69 0.0021 56.11 0.0054 170.08 -0.0051 1.000350 09:53Z 4 8014 179.61 0.0021 55.48 0.0054 -0.97 -0.0051 1.000290 11:18Z 9 8015 133.71 0.0012 71.00 0.0071 -58.56 0.0176 1.000480 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: None Stays: None ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 07:23Z 6 8011 1.00041 -4048 -1681 475 222 45.7 7.3 16 257 -- 1.7 08:23Z 8 8013 1.00035 -3455 -1163 535 -11 56.1 6.7 12 268 -- 1.3 09:53Z 4 8014 1.00029 -2863 -606 600 180 55.5 5.5 18 253 -- 1.4 11:18Z 9 8015 1.00048 -4739 -2369 425 134 71.0 4.6 22 249 -- 1.7 ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 23:44Z 55 16 16 251 (WSW) 0 - 00:17Z 54 16 25 252 (WSW) 7 - 00:49Z 53 14 24 256 (WSW) 0 - 01:21Z 51 14 16 236 (SW) 8 - 01:53Z 50 13 15 254 (WSW) 3151 - clear 02:25Z 49 13 15 264 (W) 3272 - clear 02:33Z 49 13 22 259 (W) 3365 - 02:58Z 49 14 13 252 (WSW) 3487 - 03:30Z 49 12 17 260 (W) 3415 - 04:02Z 48 11 17 266 (W) 2839 - 04:34Z 48 11 20 255 (WSW) 2726 - 05:06Z 47 11 8 267 (W) 2688 - 05:39Z 47 11 16 262 (W) 2701 - 06:11Z 47 10 15 269 (W) 2660 - 06:45Z 45 10 14 256 (WSW) 2614 - 07:15Z 45 11 19 234 (SW) 2693 - 07:47Z 44 10 18 264 (W) 2584 - 08:20Z 44 9 14 268 (W) 2486 - 08:52Z 43 10 18 270 (W) 2536 - 09:24Z 42 9 17 250 (WSW) 2602 - 09:57Z 42 7 18 256 (WSW) 2775 - 10:29Z 41 5 25 268 (W) 2769 - 11:01Z 40 7 19 249 (WSW) 2717 - 11:33Z 40 7 22 253 (WSW) 2630 - 12:07Z 41 8 28 252 (WSW) 2616 - 12:38Z 41 9 18 258 (WSW) 2519 - ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- 04:25Z Doors open 04:40Z Enclosure off 12:20Z Enclosure on, doors closed, spectro dewars force-filled Telescope parked at 121,30 with Cart 1 (Plate 2012) mounted Spectro autofill reconnected Counterweights at 270 No interlocks bypassed Dewar weights at 12:50Z Imager: 155lbs 18psi Spectro: 156lbs 18psi ---=== SOFTWARE USED ===--- IOP/SOP: v3_143_1 Watcher: v2_30_0 MCP: v5_26_0 TPM: tpm_v2_47_0 AstroDa: v14_47 TCC: TCC 2.7.2.1 August 6 2004 sdssProcedures: v1_99 SoS: v4_10_7 hoggPT: v1_6_9 plate-mapper: v4_3_1 ---=== MIRROR NUMBERS ===--- PRIMARY: -------- Scale: 1.000000 MIGS TONIGHT NOMINAL Axial A 0.5780 0.5770 Axial B 0.5930 0.5880 Axial C 0.9480 0.9460 Trans D -8.1950 -8.1960 Lateral E 10.0457 10.0330 Lateral F 11.5951 11.5951 GALILS Commanded: 4300. -1900. 2850. -13300. -7600. -7650.
