APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Monday November 7, 2005 (MJD 53682) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Howard Brewington (swing) Dan Long (night) Kaike Pan (night) Olena Malanushenko Support: Steph, Kurt by phone. ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Weather: cloudy, good seeing Plate 2333: 4 2-min exposures through clouds. please let's know if this plate is done. Plate 2338: one exposure through clouds. plate is not done yet. plate 1904: plate done. plate 2060: Four 20 min exposures gave a S/N^2 of 30. plate is not done yet. plate 2300: Three exposures. plate done. plate 2268: Plate done. plate 2264: Done. plate 2282: Two exposure. Plate not done. Problems: --- grabeInst failed. --- SOP session frozen. --- no plug map file again. see problem section for details. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: ----------- The checkout was uneventful. The spectro focus was checked, found to be within spec, and was not adjusted. See Problems Section for Spectro Numbers. Also see Problems Section for misc. Watcher messages. The SDSS camera bellows presure was 44-psi today. Night: ---------- 00:53Z cart 4 plt 2333 mounted. A fk5 star was used to center the telescope. Fiber #3 has no guide star and we have 2 stars in fiber #5. Seeing was excellent, below 1.0". The first exposure was started at about 01:50. 4 exposures were obtained through clouds. Error: A) grabInst failed. Restart servers failed. Second attemp to reboot spectro crates succussfully get spectroscopic displays back. Then, Dan managed to take data without servers. without servers, grabInst can be done without -handlers. just do "grabInstrument". B) Dan's SOP seesion was frozen just before postcalibs. C) We noticed at least two fibers are slightly down. WARNING: NGOODFIBER is in red on r1,b1,r2,b2 for the plate. 02:35Z cart 8 plate 2338 mounted. stars on goto field. SOP session were frozen again at about 02:55Z. This is the second time within 25 min. We did two exposures through clouds on this plate, but the sencond one never read out due to SOP session frozen. Seeing was about 1.1. WARNING: SKY/SEC is in red on r1,b1,r2, b2 for this plate. SOS did not reduced r1 data. By saoDisplay, highest count for r1 is about 5000. 03:20Z cart 2, plate 1904 mounted. Thick clouds were forming. Because of thick clouds at the moment. kurt was called about the problem on SOP session frozen and failure of starting servers. We tried to collect data through thick clouds but guider stars were barely seen. At about 05:30Z, it started to clear up. Seeing was still good. Three exposures were obtained. Plate done. WARNING: r1 has 20% higher sky/sec than r2 while b1 and b2 have similar sky/sec. But checking with saoDisplay, no abnormal was noticed. By looking at the plate, we noticed a science fiber is missed. 06:10 cart 7, plt 2060 mounted. Even fk5 was not in the field. Dan tried offset 0 5, and luckly got the fk5 star. cloudy but good seeing, ~1.0". Four exposures gave a S/N^2 of 30. 08:10Z cart 3, plt 2300 mounted. stars on goto fields. Thin clouds, Seeing was about 1.2". Plate done. Problem: no plug map file again. 09:25Z cart 5, plate 2268 mounted. skies were better than hours ago. seeing was about 1.1". For some reason, logTool did not get cartridge and plate information while offset did. Plate done. 10:20Z cart 9, plate 2264 mounted. stars on goto field. seeing was still good, 1.2". Plate done. Thin clouds. 11:30Z cart 6, plate 2282 mounted. Think clouds. Seeing was about 1.1". Two exposures were obtained with the second one in twilight. 12:45Z endNight rejoyced. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5837 23:07Z 23:28Z 100 O 103.24 108.37 48 ignore ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n): yes QA Procedures Done (y/n): yes UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 34634, plate -9999 ------- 19:06 34634 0.0 bias 19:12 34635 0.0 bias 19:21 34636 0.0 bias 19:32 34637 0.0 bias 19:46 34638 0.0 bias 20:00 34639 0.0 bias 20:08 34641 0.0 bias 20:28 34642 0.0 bias 21:03 34643 0.0 bias 21:11 34644 0.0 bias 21:21 34645 0.0 bias 21:27 34647 0.0 bias 21:47 34648 0.0 bias 23:08 34649 0.0 bias ----- sequence 34651, plate 2268 ------- 23:13 34651 0.0 bias 23:20 34652 10.0 flat 23:23 34653 2.0 arc 23:26 34654 2.1 arc 23:28 34655 2.1 arc ----- sequence 34656, plate -9999 ------- 00:45 34656 0.0 bias ----- sequence 34660, plate 2333 ------- 01:20 34660 0.0 bias 01:23 34662 0.0 bias 01:28 34663 0.0 bias 01:48 34664 10.0 flat 01:51 34665 2.0 arc 01:56 34666 120.1 target 02:01 34667 120.1 target 02:06 34668 120.2 target 02:10 34669 120.1 target ----- sequence 34670, plate -9999 ------- 02:16 34670 0.0 bias ----- sequence 34671, plate 2333 ------- 02:22 34671 10.0 flat 02:24 34672 2.0 arc ----- sequence 34673, plate 2338 ------- 02:40 34673 10.0 flat 02:43 34674 2.0 arc 02:50 34675 240.1 target ----- sequence 34676, plate 2338 ------- 03:06 34676 10.0 flat 03:08 34677 2.0 arc 03:13 34678 120.1 target ----- sequence 34679, plate -9999 ------- 03:28 34679 0.0 bias ----- sequence 34680, plate 1904 ------- 04:46 34680 10.0 flat 04:49 34681 2.0 arc 05:12 34682 1200.1 target 05:35 34683 1200.1 target 05:58 34684 1200.1 target 06:01 34685 10.0 flat 06:03 34686 2.0 arc ----- sequence 34687, plate 2060 ------- 06:25 34687 10.0 flat 06:27 34688 2.0 arc 06:51 34689 1200.1 target 07:14 34690 1200.1 target 07:36 34691 1200.1 target 07:59 34692 1200.1 target 08:02 34693 10.0 flat 08:04 34694 2.0 arc ----- sequence 34695, plate 2300 ------- 08:21 34695 10.0 flat 08:24 34696 2.0 arc 08:47 34697 1200.1 target 09:05 34698 900.1 target 09:22 34699 900.1 target ----- sequence 34700, plate 2268 ------- 09:35 34700 10.0 flat 09:38 34701 2.0 arc 09:55 34702 900.1 target 10:18 34703 1200.1 target ----- sequence 34704, plate 2264 ------- 10:31 34704 10.0 flat 10:33 34705 2.0 arc 10:51 34706 900.1 target 11:09 34707 900.1 target 11:26 34708 900.1 target ----- sequence 34709, plate 2282 ------- 11:40 34709 10.0 flat 11:42 34710 2.0 arc 12:00 34711 900.1 target 12:18 34712 900.1 target ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 01:45Z 4 2333 -69.80 -0.0050 60.38 0.0020 123.24 -0.0125 1.000290 05:31Z 2 1904 -23.81 -0.0020 54.90 0.0022 160.08 0.0173 1.000000 06:48Z 7 2060 281.76 -0.0072 67.52 0.0027 113.83 -0.0078 1.000300 08:36Z 3 2300 168.90 -0.0011 59.71 -0.0006 -20.23 -0.0075 1.000180 09:44Z 5 2268 66.63 -0.0004 53.51 0.0023 232.52 -0.0140 1.000280 10:38Z 9 2264 44.22 0.0005 65.31 0.0021 217.10 0.0173 1.000300 11:53Z 6 0 51.24 0.0035 73.14 0.0034 224.72 0.0214 1.000250 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL Stays: JL ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 00:01Z 5 0 1.00000 0 1115 0 121 90.0 10.3 14 200 01:45Z 4 2333 1.00029 -2864 -1189 30 -70 60.4 10.1 10 192 05:31Z 2 1904 1.00000 0 1066 -100 -24 54.9 10.8 14 224 06:47Z 7 2060 1.00030 -2963 -1417 -100 282 67.6 9.8 10 244 08:36Z 3 2300 1.00018 -1778 -368 -50 169 59.7 10.2 12 226 09:46Z 5 2268 1.00028 -2765 -1169 -50 66 53.9 9.7 9 231 10:38Z 9 2264 1.00030 -2963 -1387 -75 44 65.3 9.8 8 262 11:52Z 6 2282 1.00025 -2469 -992 -75 51 73.1 9.9 9 269 ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 23:00Z 54 18 14 221 (SW) 531 - But servers did not come back (they are supposed to do so within 15 min), then we forced servers to restart, spectro server still did not come back (with warning: port 30307 appears to be in use; window may die) while the other two did. Then we rebooted the spectro crates, but servers and spectroscopic display 1 &2 never come back, and restarted servers also failed. Then, we tried to take bias without grabInst, failed. Second attempt on rebooting the crates successfully got sectroscopic displays back but servers still did not. Without servers, we were able to take bias. Then Dan managed to taking data without relay server. About 50 min was lost due to the problem. At about 03:40Z, servers restarted. 15 min ago, steph killed all servers, then she restarted servers by "start_servers -n -i -s". This time, all servers restarted. Since we called Kurt about this problem and he might work on it at the moment. It is possible that Kurt did something so that Steph could restart the servers. Later, Kurt called back and told us that he issued several commands to see what were going on about servers but he did not tried to restarted the servers.
