APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Monday November 28, 2005 (MJD 53703) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- night: Howard Brewington Dan Long French Leger (support) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- superNova Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- 82N -startLambda 115.3, -endLambda 147.0 (with 2-degree ramps) High winds had us closed for most of the night. DIMM problems; see log. 2.5-meter problems; see log. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: ----------- The afternoon checkout was uneventful except that we had trouble logging into the plate data base. The problem was reported to Fritz, and he repaired it. The Spectro Collimation was checked and adjusted; see Problems Section for the final focus numbers. Night: ------------ We had photometric conditions at sunset. We mounted the imager and did an on-telescope bias in the darkened enclosure. Per Rick's call, we started with 82N; seeing Imaging Details for more information. 03:02Z Watcher complained that there was a LN2 problem with sp2. A cc tcheck comfirmed the problem, so we did a stopFilSeq and a startFilSeq, which the fixed condition. 04:00Z We had a 43-mph wind gust, so we went down to close. However, we could not move the scope to the stow position, i.e., it aborted in Az at ~118 degrees. After a number of tries, we were finally able to get to 121 Az with the mcp display and close the building. French looked at the problem. It seemed that the telescope was running into the wind-baffle, which was causing the abort. Since superNova scanning is performed from a parked position, it may be possible to continue if the wind speed decreases. However, we will not be able to do any other imaging or spectro with this problem since it has no quick solution. French will work on the wind-baffle problem in the morning. At 8:30Z, we called it a night and went to bed. The DIMM was unhappy tonight. When we turned on the power to the scope via the on/off switch at the base of the mount, we heard a grinding noise. We tried releasing the RA lock and moving that axis by hand, but the noise remained. We think the low temp (-8C) was causing the problem. We noticed that the glycol pressure, in the lower enclosure, was about 42 psi (normal =~22psi). And, there were puddles of glycol on the floor in front of the Glentek amps (northside) as well as under the glycol pumps on the southside of the scope. Misc. Watcher Messages are in the Problems Section. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5912 21:16Z 21:43Z 100 O 96.08 102.92 60 ignore 5913 23:54Z 00:11Z 100 O 135.74 139.93 42 bias 5914 00:59Z 01:26Z 82 S 106.90 113.46 58 ignore 5915 01:27Z 03:51Z 82 N 113.20 149.32 255 science ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- Run:5913 On telescope bias in dark enclosure with t-bars unlatched. ++++++++++++++++++++++++ Run 5914: superNova Science, 82S -startLambda 115 Started the run ~30 min before 18 deg twilight to get setup and hit the ramp at 18 deg twilight.
