APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Monday May 1, 2006 (MJD 53857) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Days: Howard Brewington Observers: Jurek & Elena ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Done 3 plates: 2489, 1777, 1721 Plates which need to be checked before declearing them done: 2009 (r1 s/n =1 while the rest ccds shows s/n >6) 2247 special plate. Could someone check on these two plates and tell us if we can declare them done, please? Problems: --------- - too large to correct error in alt (see the log) - axies halted during guiding on the filed (see the log). - Afternoon checkout: sos shows plate 2077 but there is no such plate in the data base, do we know what happened here (just a mistake)? ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: ----------- Beyond the noise bars in Astro/Photo monitors, no other problems were discovered during the afternoon checkout. The spectro focus was checked and adjusted; it's set to ~9.5-degrees C. See the Problems Section for details. 05:40Z We just noticed that the afternoon spectro focus check was done on plate 2077, which is not plugged for tonight (at least sos thinks it was 2077). Do we know what has happened here? Night: ----------- 02:38Z cart 5 plt 2489. Fk5 used to find the guide stars. Plate done. 03:59Z cart 1 plt 2009. Fk5 used to find the guide stars. r1 shows s/n =1 while all the rest chips have s/n above 6. Sos warnings: sdR-r1-00038996.fit: WARNING: Bad sky residuals at 5803 to 9186 Ang; Peak chi= 68.44 sdR-r1-00038996.fit: WARNING: Median sky-residual chi2 = 62.7721 sdR-r1-00038996.fit: WARNING: Max sky-residual chi2 = 4152.8303 at 6300.9299 Ang (ignoring 5577) It looks like we're collecting enough singnal on this plate, but without someone looking at the data we cannot tell for sure if the plate is done. 05:10Z The temperature did not dropp as we expected. Istead it rised a little. So we decided to piston the collimator to match 11.5 C temperature. 05:05Z cart 2 plt 1777. Fk5 used. 05:46Z In the middle of an exposure or when we paused the exposure to change the exposure time, we lost our guide stars. Tccmon showed slew type: "axis stop" and axis were halted. No too large to correct errors, no clue why that has happened. We went to the field again and found the guide stars. The exposure had to be aborted but after we paused it again we accidently read it. Well, after that we decleared it bad. The last exposure which suppose to finish that plate give us s/n (combined with two previous exposures) in r1 (13.9) and r2 (14.4). Which is slightly too litle, but we declared that plate done. At this time it's photometric, good seeing and no moon, but we have about 1 houre before we can do any stripe, so we mounted a special plate. 06:31Z cart 4 plt 2247. SOGTF. Using all fibers we set the scale. Then disabled fibers: 1,4,7 (guider showed that we need to change the scale 0.014 guiding only on 8 stars, but we didn't since we setup the scale already on all fibers). We Started 600 sec exposure, which was paused ~60 sec before the end. offset obj /pabs /computed -0.026925,0.0 was applied then we disabled 8 fibers and were guiding only on 1,4,7, for the rest of the 600 exposure time. All would be good but when we look at goStare output we see: sp1> Exposure started at 2006-05-02 06:47:33Z; 52.5 seconds to go SOPGUI: resumeStare 600 Changing exposure time to 600 seconds appending ALTER Exposure started at 2006-05-02 06:47:33Z; 36.7 seconds to go Exposure started at 2006-05-02 06:47:33Z; 29.2 seconds to go so actualy we got only 29.2 seconds bright star exposure time right? After that we were trying to enable fibers and got guider error (see the problem section). guider loop did not work. The way around it was to go to Field and get gflat again. Second combined exposure after pausing 60 seconds before its end was resumed and we got bright star exposure time: Exposure started at 2006-05-02 07:19:56Z; 49.2 seconds to go SOPGUI: resumeStare 600 Changing exposure time to 600 seconds appending ALTER Exposure started at 2006-05-02 07:19:56Z; 33.5 seconds to go Exposure started at 2006-05-02 07:19:56Z; 25.9 seconds to go On the third combined exposure we thought we got more time for the bright star exposure. The plan was to start 630 minutes exposure and stop it after 540 second, but insted we stopped it after 570 seconds (1 minute befor its end again), so by a mistake we increased integration time for the faint star exposure while the bright star exposure remained the same: sp1> Exposure started at 2006-05-02 07:42:20Z; 49.1 seconds to go SOPGUI: resumeStare 630 Changing exposure time to 630 seconds appending ALTER Exposure started at 2006-05-02 07:42:20Z; 33.4 seconds to go Exposure started at 2006-05-02 07:42:20Z; 25.9 seconds to go Instruction is not clear about the number of 600 sec exposres, but after consulting with Steph we decided to take 3 expousres only. 08:10Z Imager mounted. We scanstriped to 1020 S (run 6126), but while drifting we noticed 08:20Z we've got too large to correct error in altitude on slew to the stripe. We stopped the drift, forced fiducials, moved the telescope in alt to make it cross a couple of altitude fiducials then scanStripe again. 08:35Z run 6127, stripe 1020 S. Good seeing since the beginning. 08:43Z Hmmm - clouds! Why now??? Both runs 6126, 6127 called ignore. 09:01Z Switching back to spectroscopy. 09:31Z cart 8 plt 1721. SOGTF.
