APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Monday June 12, 2006 (MJD 53899) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Howard Brewington (observer) Jian Ge (ET) Roger Cohen (ET) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- ET Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Around 07:52Z, we had a problem with the telescope becoming unfocused. At first, bad seeing was blamed for the problem; however, a new focusSweep indicated that the Rel. Focus number had changed from -175 to +25 although the temp had only changed by about one-degree. See log for more details. The gearHead of the southeast Az motor of the windBaffle is leaking oil; see log. We had windBaffle touches in Az and Alt again today; see Problem section for the Watcher messages. We finished seven plates. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: ----------- The afternoon checkout was uneventful for the most part. However, I did noticed that the gearHead on the southeast Az motor of the windBaffle was leaking oil onto the floor of the lower enclosure. Night: ---------- 01:50Z Doors cracked, louvers opened, fans on. 02:29Z Enclosure off under partly cloudy skies. 03:00Z Cart 08, Plate 8024. Found guide stars with goToField. Alt=42, temp=19.7, seeing=1.5" and dust=1244. Completed a fifty minute exposure. 04:16Z Cart 09, Plate 8025. Found guide stars with goToField. Alt=40, temp=19.9, seeing=2" and dust=1.3K. Completed a forty minute exposure. 04:32Z We are getting much more clouds now; guide stars are difficult to see, at times, with a 20-second exposure. 05:11Z Cart 04, Plate 8026. Found guide stars with goToField. Alt=60, temp=18.5, seeing=1.8" and dust=1.3K. Completed a fifty minute exposure. We now have photometric skies. 06:15Z Cart 06, Plate 8021. Found guide stars with goToField. Alt=80, temp=17.9, seeing=1.2" and dust=1.6K. Completed a fifty minute exposure. 07:12Z midNight ET cals. 07:22Z Cart 07, Plate 8022. Found guide stars with goToField. Alt=73, temp=17.6, seeing=1.2" and dust=1.5K. 07:52Z I cannot see the guide stars now because of bad seeing, which is about 6" 08:07Z Roger stopped the exposure since the guider lost the field. Then, I did a goToField and a focus sweep. Although the Rel. Focus was very happy at -175 during the first part of this exposure (with seeing=1.2"), the new focus number is now +25, which makes no sense (except for some type of flexure?). Instead of bad seeing, it now appears that the telescope may have gone out of focus for some unknown reason although the Rel. Focus value did not change during the exposure. And, there was only about one degree difference in the temperature between the beginning and end of the exposure. 08:17Z Seeing is now running at about 1.9" after the new focus sweep. So, we started another exposure on Cart 07, Plate 8022. Alt=60, temp=16.7, seeing=1.9" and dust=1.3K. Rel Focus=+25. This exposure ran for forty minutes. 09:16Z Cart 05, Plate 8027. Found guide stars with goToField. Alt=75, temp=16.7, seeing=1.6" and dust=1.3K. I did a quick focus sweep for this plate and discovered that the focus is now happy at -100. A fifty minute exposure was completed. 10:06Z Cart 03, Plate 8028. Found guide stars with goToField. Alt=69, temp=16.5, seeing=1.7" and dust=1.3K. A fifty minute exposure was completed. Misc Watcher messages are posted in the Problems section. endNight finished and was happy. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n): QA Procedures Done (y/n): UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 39658, plate -9999 ------- 23:57 39658 0.0 bias ----- sequence 39659, plate 8024 ------- 00:01 39659 0.0 bias ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL Stays: JL ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 22:27Z 78 32 0 225 (SW) 1284 - 22:59Z 78 32 7 205 (SSW) 1290 - 23:31Z 74 30 2 210 (SSW) 1196 - 00:02Z 75 31 4 222 (SW) 1239 - 00:33Z 75 32 7 181 (S) 1275 - 01:04Z 77 32 4 199 (SSW) 905 - 01:35Z 75 30 7 203 (SSW) 913 - 02:05Z 72 27 6 186 (S) 977 - 02:37Z 70 26 6 160 (SSE) 980 - 03:08Z 68 31 15 125 (SE) 1190 - 03:40Z 67 31 12 119 (ESE) 1355 - 04:11Z 66 31 13 122 (ESE) 1344 - 04:41Z 67 30 14 143 (SE) 1294 - 05:12Z 65 32 18 125 (SE) 1360 - 05:42Z 64 32 17 120 (ESE) 1529 - 06:12Z 64 32 18 126 (SE) 1665 - 06:42Z 64 32 18 141 (SE) 1606 - 07:13Z 64 32 16 131 (SE) 1531 - 07:43Z 60 34 14 124 (SE) 1535 - 08:15Z 59 35 19 137 (SE) 1307 - 08:45Z 61 34 18 153 (SSE) 1360 - 09:15Z 62 33 18 145 (SE) 1384 - 09:47Z 61 33 18 135 (SE) 1271 - 10:19Z 60 30 20 136 (SE) 1251 - 10:51Z 60 27 16 134 (SE) 1219 - ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- 01:50Z Doors cracked, louvers opened, fans on. 02:29Z Enclosure off 11:10Z Enclosure on, doors and louvers closed, fans off.
