Due to az aborts 82,N was observed from lambda 113 -> -123 (including ramps) in two chunks: run 6313: from lambda 113 -> 130.5 including ramps run 6314: from lambda 127 -> -123 including ramps Problems: --------- Couldn't open a connection to sdsshost2: At evening: [observer@landru observer]$ ssh sdsshost2 15955: ssh_exchange_identification: Connection closed by remote host (it might be caused by too many connection opened to sdsshost2). Az aborts: probably due to rough floor - see the log for details and a theory why it happens and for temporary solution (which works only when the telescope is parked at the equator). ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon checkout ok. Night: ------ 01:28Z run 6311 bias on the telescope (after sunset inside enclosure). I've got a strange error today while trying to connect to sdsshost2: [observer@landru observer]$ ssh sdsshost2 15955: ssh_exchange_identification: Connection closed by remote host Fortunately I've got enough windows on sdsshost2 opened already for normal operation, so the problem wasn't critical, but it's serious. IT's likely we had too many connection made to sdsshost2 (Mamoru and Masayuki work on MSP). Spectro offsets cleared. 02:08Z Run 6312, stripe 82 N. Mariginaly photometric conditions, seeing ~1.3". Good since the beginning (lambda 110). 02:37Z Azimut break went on. Drift stopped. Cleared the break and started over. 02:40Z Run 6313, stripe 82,N . Good since the beginning (in focus, and seeing of survey quality). Ramp begins at frame 19, lambda 113. Skippy fails to run at that lambda but latter finds 5 stars and it's happy (if we can believe these 5 stars). Later on it finds 33 stars and it's happy too, so we are pointing where we should :). Rick called and confirmed that 82 N is a good choice for tonight. Science: frame 32, lambda 115. 03:40Z Frame 90 lambda 123. nuErr got greater than 8". 03:54Z I noticed that azimuth stopped again, and that is the reason why we have nuError going larger. 03:56Z Drift stopped again. Az axis cleared. End frame: 134, lambda 130.5 04:11Z We checked with Mamoru what is going on at the telescope and we think we found what is the cause of our problem. The theory is the rough floor around telscope (at AZ =~20 deg). The dog house just scratches against the floor in that plase and one can hear that. While the telescope is moving fast that seems not to be a problem, but when tracking at the parked position the friction is higher and that makes az axis to abort. BTW: root causes of the break seen by the interlocks were: az_break_dis_stat az_mtr1_rdy az_mtr2_rdy 30 minutes of science time lost due to the problem. 04:08Z Run 6314, stripe 82,N. Started again, overlap with the previous run taken into account. Good since the beginning: frame 10, lambda 127. 04:18Z Az aborted again. We are still at the position where the dog house srcatches against the floor. This time however I just cleared the break (axis init) followed by quick track command. Since we are almost parked that should not afect much the drift. Indeed: At frame 21-22 lambda 128.96 I issued axis init and track command. I didn't see any smeared images and skippy shows very low nuErr on that frame. So I think my temporary solution to the problem is ok when Az break is caught on time. Skippy run on later frames 27 is happy too. 04:42Z Subarcsecond seeing. 11:22Z Frame 731, lambda -125 end of science. Frame 744 lambda -123 end of the ramp.
