APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Thursday October 26, 2006 (MJD 54035) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Swing: Viktor Malanushenko Observers: Olena Malanushenko & Stephanie Snedden ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- supernovaScience! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- A promising night turned a little frustrating, but we had a half night's worth of rewards. o Four rotator aborts at low tracking speeds o high wind gusts and very poor seeing o The DIMM cover with the two apertures is downhill somewhere between the enclosure and Dog Canyon. o Weird startLambda in the report file for one run. and now the good stuff: 82 S imaged from lambda 145 to -125 in photometric conditions, but lousy seeing. Spooling/photo started on Run 6501 ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon --------- Telescope has been checked. All systems work fine. Spectro Collimation has been done and focusing on expected night temp.= -4.0C. Time exposure on Spectro Collimation has been equal 3 sec. The details - in to "Problems' section. The PT has been checked. It works fine; Biases and Dom Flats have been obtained. Disk space has been checked and cleaned. Now there is: /files partition ~97 Gb and /data partition ~359 Gb. 23:45Z Enclosure doors opened, fans and blowers on, louvers opened. Night ----- Supernova imaging under clear skies. 01:27Z- Run 6497: Supernova 82 S with startLambda 111. Focus good by frame 26, Skippy good from the beginning. 01:46Z - Start of science, lambda 115. 01:49Z - Rotator aborted. We ended the drift and restarted. 01:52Z - Run 6498: 82 S startLambda 112. Skippy good from the start. Focus loop good from frame 25. Wind gusts hovering right around closure limit. We will push on until the wind gusts go a little higher. 02:14Z - Rotator aborted again. We also had trouble with NaNs in the idReport file. A weird startLambda of 10184 caused the failure in the creation of the file. We stop and start again. 02:00Z - Right about this time, just as the wind gusts reached the closure limits, the two images of Polaris in the DIMM became one. Sure enough, the aperture cover was gone. We looked under the enclosure for the cover, but did not see it. French says that Bob gets to look again during daylight. look again in daylight. It's a long drop, and we will be lucky if there is no damage to the wedge prism in the one aperture. I'm speculating that the cover was loose to start with, because it came off just as the wind gusts went over the limit. We have been using a friction fit. It may be time to rethink that. 02:24Z - Run 6499: 82 S yet again. startLambda 112 Skippy good from the beginning, focus loop good from frame 30 . Seeing bad, wind speed at closure limit, but we push the limit a bit and stay open. 02:38Z - Rotator aborted again. Wind gusts over 40 mph. We closed. We put in a phone call to French re. the rotator aborts and left a message. 03:10Z - French called back. He speculates that a combination of high winds and cold temps coupled with very slow tracking speeds could cause a pre-load condition on the rotator that caused the aborts. He asked to be called back if/when we open again. 05:21Z - Wind gusts dropped, so we reopened. We ran the rotator around plus and minus 180 degrees to lower the grease viscosity. We called French so he could monitor any further rotator aborts. 05:31Z - Run 6500: 82S again. Rotator aborted only a few minutes into the drift. Stopped the drift. ----- Useful data starts here ----- 05:41Z - Run 6501: Supernova 82 S again. startLambda 141. Skippy was good from the beginning. The focus loop was good from about frame 20, but seeing was wretched, and the focus loop had difficulty following the poor PSFs in the CCDs. 05:49Z - frame 30, lambda 145, start of science (RA 330). Seeing continues to be very bad. No rotator abort by frame 50. What has changed? We are pointing more to the west, the rotator is at 41 deg instead of 67 deg, and the wind speed is a little lower. The temperature is now above freezing. We will continue to monitor rotator currents and voltages. The voltage averaged about 780 counts at the start of the run and 900 at the end of the run and held steady throughout...no spikes or anything unusual. 11:48Z - End of science at frame 631, lambda -125 12:00Z - End of ramp and drift at frame 649, lambda -122.4. endNight rejoiced. We started run 6501 spooling at the end of the night.
