APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Monday February 5, 2007 (MJD 54137) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Swing: Dan Long Night: Steph Snedden Mike Harvanek ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- ShakeDown Night 1 ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Optics were homed and relaxed. Operated DIMM. It ran well other than a problem with the centering routine on start up. Obtained and implemented a 72 point pointing model. The imager was tested on-sky. Everything checked out okay. Performed Schlegel's test of UV performance of the spectrographs. PR 7190 was closed. This test also served as an on-sky shake test of the spectrograph system. The 25 biases for spectro monthly checkout were obtained. The cloud camera showed a weird variation in its sky level. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: ---------- Afternoon checkout complete. Engcam mounted by engineering crew in the morning. Homed and relaxed optics. Modified nominal MiG values to reflect sign change of M2 C MiG (After the battery replacement the C MiG changed value in the opposite sign of A and B and this was corrected today). Not able to check spectro focus with engcam mounted. Spectro dewar #7 was reading 30 PSI when I did the afternoon check. I opened the vent and let it drop back to 27 PSI, but it looks like the pressure relief is letting it get too high. The outside manipulator makes a scraping noise when trollying near the middle of its range. The noise appears to be coming from the top end. 23:57Z Doors Open, Louvers Open, Fans On Night: ------ We started up DIMM. When we tried to center Polaris on the chip (by clicking the centering button), Polaris moved out of the field. We stopped the routine, roughly re-centered Polaris by hand and clicked the centering button again. Again, it quickly moved out of the field. So, we re-centered by hand again and started taking seeing measurements without fine tuning the centering. Everything appeared to work normally after this and the auto centering routine that runs during the gathering of seeing data seemed to work properly, eventually bringing Polaris closer to the center of the chip. 01:57Z Began the standard 72 point pointing model. Details follow: With all terms fixed, the comparison between the December model and the current model gives: Read 72 data points * fix * fit coeff change value sigma 1 IE -149.52 2 IA -140.73 3 PZZ1 -137.89 4 AN +9.15 5 AW -9.30 6 CA +33.01 7 HWCA2 -0.37 8 HWSA2 -0.79 9 HNCA1 +0.01 10 HNSA1 -0.98 11 ACEC +2.18 12 ACES -0.85 13 TX -6.80 Sky RMS = 17.48 Popn SD = 17.48 With the main terms allowed to vary (ie, ia, pzz1, an, aw, ca) * use ie ia pzz1 an aw ca * fit coeff change value sigma 1 IE +17.431 -132.09 0.869 2 IA +1.786 -138.94 1.419 3 PZZ1 +1.562 -136.33 1.069 4 AN +1.680 +10.83 0.342 5 AW -2.889 -12.19 0.342 6 CA +3.841 +36.86 0.991 7 HWCA2 -0.37 8 HWSA2 -0.79 9 HNCA1 +0.01 10 HNSA1 -0.98 11 ACEC +2.18 12 ACES -0.85 13 TX -6.80 Sky RMS = 2.52 Popn SD = 2.63 With all terms allowed to vary, * use * fit coeff change value sigma 1 IE -2.391 -134.48 1.010 2 IA +0.367 -138.57 1.102 3 PZZ1 -7.055 -143.39 3.318 4 AN -0.541 +10.29 0.345 5 AW -0.693 -12.88 0.339 6 CA -0.596 +36.26 0.817 7 HWCA2 +0.070 -0.30 0.446 8 HWSA2 +0.059 -0.73 0.457 9 HNCA1 +1.758 +1.77 0.516 10 HNSA1 +1.006 +0.03 0.514 11 ACEC -2.411 -0.23 0.622 12 ACES +1.900 +1.05 0.631 13 TX +3.497 -3.31 1.590 Sky RMS = 1.90 Popn SD = 2.10 The errors looked reasonable so we implemented the new model. We then mounted the imager and did an on-sky imager system check. 03:56Z Run 6705. Collimation and pointing check. Skippy showed our pointing to be quite good. Donuts on both sides of focus were evenly illuminated for all 6 columns. Here's the donut info: in focus - frame 20; +300 - frame 32; -300 - frame 38. Donut frames can be found at the usual place on phoenix. 04:19Z Run 6706. On-telescope bias. Everything looked normal. Switched to spectroscopy to do the on-sky spectro system check and Schlegel's UV test. 05:05Z Plate 2587 (cartridge 2), survey. Needed an FK5 to acquire the field. Although too moony to obtain survey science (2.2 zappas) we will use this plate to perform Schlegel's UV spectro test and check out the spectro system on the sky. Schlegel's UV spectro test: A preCal was obtained initially to allow reductions by SoS to proceed. The initial collimator motor positions were: sp1 Coll_motor_A -3247 Coll_motor_B -5459 Coll_motor_C -5376 sp2 Coll_motor_A 513 Coll_motor_B -892 Coll_motor_C -190 Then there were three iterations of tilt movement/collimation which resulted in the following final collimator motor positions: sp1 Coll_motor_A -4544 Coll_motor_B 35242 Coll_motor_C 14331 sp2 Coll_motor_A -8119 Coll_motor_B 34474 Coll_motor_C 13174 This resulted in WAVEMINs of 3397.6 and 3368.1 for b1 & b2, respectively (frame 42665). We may have been able to drop these WAVEMINs by another 100 angstroms or so with a final collimation iteration but we were in danger of losing plate availabilty and the only 2 remaining plates for the evening had WAY too much moon to be usable. The preCal flat (frame 42664) showed the collimation to be good. However, the preCal arc (frame 42665) showed b2's WSIGMA value to be in the red (although b1's was in the black) and SoS rejected both r1 and r2 and wouldn't reduce them because of "big wavelength gaps". We obtained 3 data frames (42666-42668, 3300 sec total) with the spectrographs in this "UV" configuration. We also took a postCal (frames 42669-42670). SoS did not reject any of the postCal arc. It showed 3 of the 4 cameras to be in collimation (only b2 was not) and it gave WAVEMINs of 3393.1 and 3368.5 for b1 & b2, respectively. The postCal flat showed the collimation to be good in all cameras. PR 7190 was closed. 09:05Z We closed the building for spectro monthly checkout. The spectro collimator motors were restored to their original positions. A subsequent postCal verified the collimator motors were indeed where they had been initially. 09:39Z Began 25 biases for spectro monthly checkout (frames 42673 through 42697). Bias frame 42688 was visually inspected and found to be normal.
