APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Monday May 28, 2007 (MJD 54249) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Audrey Simmons Kaike Pan Scott Fleming (UF) Brian Lee (UF) Dan Oravetz (support) Wendell Jordan (support) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- ET Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- We delayed opening a half an hour due to threatening clouds, but luckily after 10pm, the skies cleared and became photometric. We never were able to issue the goToField command and find stars with each field. A combination of fk5InFiber and spiral pattern commands were used instead to find the fields. There were fairly large offsets to each of the fields - ~20" in any direction. However, we were able to get good data for cartridges 5 (plate 8025), 1 (plate 8026), 6 (plate 8027), 9 (plate 8028). We encountered problems with the cartridge air pressure latches when mounting cart 2 around 3:30am. Please see log for more detail. Note: Telescope was left without a cartridge mounted and counterweights at zero. Audrey still had trouble with copying over ircam images during endNight. Kaike's account was used instead. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: ---------- Afternoon checkout went smoothly. 01:02Z - Started ventilation with doors and louvers open, fans on. Night: ------ There were threatening clouds to the north around sunset. We delayed opening slightly, and therefore lost about a half an hour. 03:10Z - Opened enclosure. 03:51Z - Cart 5, plate 8025 mounted. No GSFOGTF, so an fk5 star was used. There was a large offset in the field - about 20". 50 min exposure taken. Seeing 1.3". Shortly after we started exposing, the skies cleared and became photometric. 04:56Z - Cart 1, plate 8026. fk5 star was used to find field. Again, the field was offset by a large amount - ~15". 50 min exposure taken. Seeing 1.3". 05:52Z - Cart 6, plate 8027. We had a lot of difficulty trying to find the guide stars. They were not found on goToField, with fk5InFiber, nor with spiral pattern commands. The field was transiting near the zenith at the time, and we noticed that the rotator was working really hard to keep up. We figured that this was the reason why we never found the guide stars. After 40 minutes (including the cartridge change), we gave up and went onto the next cartridge. 06:34Z - Cart 6, plate 8027. We did not find guide stars on goToField nor with an fk5 star. We used a spiral pattern and found an fk5 star about 20" off. A 50 min exposure was taken. Seeing 1.4". 08:31Z - Cart 9, plate 8028. Several spiral patterns were used to find the field. There was another big jump in the offsets and for some reason, they kept reseting after instChange was issued. This is partly why we had another hard time trying to find the field. 50 min exposure was taken. Seeing 1.3". 09:35Z - Cart 2 was being mounted when only one latch on the NE side latched and the light was green. The other two refused to latch. The air pressure (yellow) light was not lit. Then we checked the interlock for the instrument change, the cause was cart hight is less than 2 inches. We thought this is false information, we then switch to manual mode to see if we can latch the catridge, it did the same thing, then we unlatched cartridge 2, lower it down without any problem in manual mode. Because we just had cartridge 9 mounted and dismounted without any problem. So we want to check if we can have cartridge latched again. So we raised it and tried to lacth it in the manual mode, it did the same: only the NE latch lached. Then we unlatched all three latchers (three red lights on), then lower the linda cart, This caused the southern-most slithead was stuck. At the monent, we also notice a loud, high-pitched noise coming from downstairs. Wendell was contacted about the problem and came to the site. Before Wendell got here, With big help from Dan Oravetz, we were able to take off the cartridge. 10:45Z - Wendell made it to the site and we were able to move the counterweights down to zero and close the enclosure. He then checked out the site air regulator inside the cone section downstairs and noticed that there was a bad leak. He thinks that this was the cause of our problem - a lack of air pressure to the cartridge latches. 11:05Z - Enclosure on, doors and louvers shut, fans on. 12:12Z - endNight rejoiced on Kaike's machine, but crashed when copying over the ircam images on Audrey's account. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n): QA Procedures Done (y/n): UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 45091, plate -9999 ------- 00:07 45091 0.0 bias ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 03:56Z 5 8025 -40.70 -0.0024 53.04 0.0039 146.64 -0.0316 1.000180 05:03Z 1 8026 199.79 0.0022 67.21 0.0050 28.64 -0.0122 1.000190 06:57Z 6 8027 121.12 0.0035 59.21 0.0054 -82.47 -0.0056 1.000150 08:33Z 9 8028 139.73 0.0007 72.42 0.0052 -50.56 0.0130 1.000100 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 03:56Z 5 8025 1.00018 -1778 -450 -150 -41 53.0 13.6 9 269 - 1.3 05:03Z 1 8026 1.00019 -1876 -542 -125 200 67.2 13.1 10 267 - 1.3 06:57Z 6 8027 1.00015 -1481 -96 -25 121 59.2 12.5 11 222 - 1.3 08:33Z 9 8028 1.00010 -988 300 -10 140 72.4 10.9 12 217 - 1.4 ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 22:59Z 54 32 15 214 (SW) 1002 - Cloudy 23:32Z 45 38 21 310 (NW) 3513 - " 00:04Z 46 38 21 59 (ENE) 2298 - " 00:36Z 48 36 4 163 (SSE) 1359 - Clear 01:06Z 56 26 9 294 (WNW) 1054 - " 01:37Z 55 26 9 268 (W) 1026 - " 02:07Z 55 26 10 300 (WNW) 1010 - " 02:37Z 55 24 10 303 (WNW) 955 - " 03:07Z 55 24 11 268 (W) 930 - " 03:37Z 56 21 10 268 (W) 1034 - " 04:09Z 56 20 9 265 (W) 964 - " 04:39Z 56 20 7 264 (W) 922 - " 05:09Z 55 23 9 247 (WSW) 1022 - " 05:40Z 52 26 8 220 (SW) 1081 - " 06:10Z 53 27 10 183 (S) 1012 - " 06:42Z 53 27 10 209 (SSW) 1128 - " 07:12Z 54 24 11 218 (SW) 1005 - " 07:42Z 52 27 12 213 (SSW) 1042 - 08:12Z 52 27 9 188 (S) 1064 - 08:43Z 51 26 12 214 (SW) 1105 - 09:13Z 51 26 10 211 (SSW) 990 - 09:43Z 51 25 6 258 (WSW) 958 - 10:13Z 51 24 7 250 (WSW) 1070 - 10:43Z 51 23 1 229 (SW) 956 - 11:13Z 52 18 9 308 (NW) 812 - 11:55Z 51 19 7 278 (W) 817 - 12:10Z 51 20 6 293 (WNW) 818 - ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- 01:02Z - Began ventilation.
