APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Tuesday June 5, 2007 (MJD 54257) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Elena Malanushenko Dan Oravetz Shannon Watters (Afternoon; Support) Steph Snedden (Moral Support; Support by phone) French Leger (Support) Viktor Malanushenko Dimitry Bizyaev ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Shakedown & Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Homed and relaxed the mirrors. We were unable to get a new pointing model because of the weather; we did not have long enough periods of clear or reasonably clear skies. We encountered a problem with the rotator which we traced to the rotator fiducial table (see log). As a result, v1_62 (current version) of the mcp_fiducials is using the rotator fiducial table from v1_58. Since the root of the problem was discovered (thanks, Steph) and we did not get a pointing model, new fiducial tables will be reconstructed and installed Wednesday afternoon and of course we hope to obtain a pointing model Wednesday night. Test IOP worked fine. PT icon was visible on cloudcam images and MOP worked OK. See Spectroscopy Data Summary section for bias exposure number inconsistency. We had an error running endNight. See Problems section. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: --------- Installed new fiducial tables (alt.dat, az.dat, rot.dat) v1_61. (Note: the current version is now v1_62 which is using the rotator fiducial table from v1_58 (see problem below). New tables will be reconstructed Wednesday afternoon since we were unable to get a pointing model tonight.) Homed and relaxed the mirrors. All systems checked and working. The engineering camera is mounted so we didn't check the spectrograph focus but it should still be set for ~12C. 00:45Z - Began ventilation. Doors and louvers opened, fans on. Night: ----- 02:15Z - Enclosure off. 02:30Z - Rotator fiducial correction was too large on test slew, so we forced the fiducial from the MCP. 04:00Z - Enclosure on due to clouds, but still ventilating. When putting the enclosure on, we noticed the rotator hadn't moved to 0 after the slew to 121,6,0 mount. After repeatedly trying to set the position to 0-degrees in the MCP menu, French came down. We set the rotator to 0 by moving the rotator until it was close to the physical 0-degree marker (needle pointing to tape marking) and then set the position in the MCP to 0. Then, we would move the rotator in order to cross some fiducials and move back to 0 and then fiducialize and each time the correction would bring the MCP rotator reading back to about -67.5-degrees. We called Steph and she looked at the new fiducial tables. Shannon spoke with Steph and the rotator fiducial table from v1_58 was copied into v1_62. We looked at the rotator fiducial table from v1_58 and compared it to the table in v1_62 and we noticed a clear offset. We took point 4 and point 8 from v1_58 and compared it to points 4 and 8 in the v1_62 rotator table, specifically, and noticed they were offset by the same amount. For the rotator, the canonical fiducial crossing defaults to 78, but since it doesn't read 78 anymore, we force it to read 75. The "arguments" used to force this canonical on the v1_58 table was just "-setCanon 75" but we really need "-setCanon 75:2590827". How the v1_58 turned out correctly without the ":2590827" piece is a mystery. Since a pointing model wasn't done tonight due to weather, we will reconstruct and install new fiducial tables Wednesday afternoon. 09:38Z - Stopped ventilation. Doors and louvers closed, fans off. endNight did not finish. See Problems section. endNight rejoiced. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6841 22:59Z 23:50Z 100 O -52.18 -39.36 99 ignore ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n): y QA Procedures Done (y/n): n UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 45147, plate -9999 ------- 00:11 45147 0.0 bias 00:15 45149 0.0 bias 01:29 45150 0.0 bias 02:08 45151 0.0 bias expnum 45148 does not appear here, but appears on SoS with b2 and r2 values only. 45147 only has b1 and r1 values. Note that binned scans are not supposed to have gangs, but I'm not yot smart enough to distinguish binned and unbinned scans. If files that really should be there are missing, perhaps you should stop here, run copyUnstoredFilesInIdReport, and rerun endNight. Continue with endNight? no Error: verifyImagerFilesOnDisk 54257 -verbose aborted due to missing imager gang or frame files We ran "copyUnstoredFilesInIdReport 54257" twice and the files "Failed to poolCopy". Since the flavor of the run is "ignore" we chose "do not care" when prompted by endNight and continued with endNight. endNight also complained about the spectro exposure frames discrepnacy described in the Spectroscopy Data Summary. endNight finally rejoiced.
