APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Monday June 18, 2007 (MJD 54270) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Viktor Malanushenko Dan Oravetz Shannon Watters (afternoon) Dan Long (on-site support) Wendell Jordan (support) Steph Snedden (support) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Spectroscopy. Finished Cartridge 2, plate 1792. Finished Cartridge 7, plate 2187. Obtained good signal on Cartridge 9, plate 2449. Obtained good signal on Cartridge 8, plate 2538. We had a flat-field petal problem that caused us to lose over 2 hours of science time (see log). Thank you Dan Long for coming to fix it. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: --------- All systems checked and working. No adjustments made to the spectro focus; set for ~14.5C. Night: ----- 01:30Z - Began ventilation. Doors and louvers opened, fans and blowers on. 02:07Z - Enclosure off. Cartridge 2, plate 1792, chunk94. Needed an fk5 to acquire the field. 03:24Z - Pre-Calib. 03:37Z - 15-minute exposure. 03:55Z - 20-minute exposure. 04:18Z - 15-minute exposure. Seeing: 1.1" - 1.3". SoS recommended post-calibs after the last exposure, but it was too late. SoS warned of a "Whopping fiber # 513." Finished this plate. Cartridge 3, plate 2744, chunk165. Guide stars found on gotoField. 04:45Z - Pre-Calib. 04:51Z - 15-minute exposure (aborted due to flat-field petal problem, see below). SoS warned "Reject science: Flat-field screens are closed!" Due to the duration of the flat-field petal problem, we did not acquire any signal for this plate since the only exposure was aborted and SoS was "unable to reduce science exposure." 05:00Z - After we slewed to the field for Cartridge 3 and took pre-cal's, when we began our first science exposure we noticed in the Telescope System Status cartoon that the second-from-left (in the System Status window) flat-field petal was still closed. Soon after the Watcher warned that a flat-field petal was still closed. We re-issued the "close" and "open" commands from the MCP many times and still, the flat-field petal (physically labeled 10:30 on the telescope) would not respond. We called Steph and she recommended that we manually try to move the petal in order to contact the switches. We went down to the telescope and manually tried pushing the petal to make sure it was in fact encountering the switch, but this did not cause it to open when we issued the "open" command from the MCP. Next, we manually opened the petal all the way and then opened the rest of the petals from the MCP. When we then tried to close all the petals, the 10:30 petal closed, but much more slowly and roughly than the others (it was not a continuous close, but rather it moved in discrete and noisy steps). Then when we tried to open them all again, the 10:30 petal remained closed. We called Wendell and then Dan Long, and when Wendell called back he recommended the same manual test as Steph and then described the procedure for checking the set-screws between the gear and the flat-field petals. Dan called back while we were at the telescope and then came on-site to replace one missing set-screw on the clutch and tighten all the others. This fixed the problem. (Note: This is the same problem described in the MJD 54242 observing log from May 21st.) Cartridge 9, plate 2449, segue139. Guide stars found on gotoField. 07:32Z - Pre-Calib. 07:39Z - 15-minute exposure. 07:57Z - 20-minute exposure. 08:21Z - 25-minute exposure. 08:49Z - Post-Calib. Seeing: 1.0" - 1.3". SoS recommended post-calibs after the first exposure, which we took after the third exposure since the plate was expiring. Cartridge 7, plate 2187, seguefaint118. Guide stars found on gotoField. 09:01Z - Pre-Calib. (accidentally clicked post-cals button instead of pre-cals) 09:07Z - 25-minute exposure. 09:35Z - Post-Calib. Seeing: 1.2" - 1.3". Finished this plate. Cartridge 8, plate 2538. segue146. Needed a spiral pattern to find the fk5 and obtain the offsets. 10:17Z - Pre-Calib. 10:23Z - 10-minute exposure. 10:39Z - Post-Calib. Seeing: 1.5". 10:52Z - Enclosure on, doors and louvers closed, fans off. endNight rejoiced. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6857 23:25Z 23:45Z 100 O -32.68 -27.81 47 ignore ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n): y QA Procedures Done (y/n): y UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 45418, plate 2538 ------- 23:27 45418 0.0 bias ----- sequence 45419, plate 1792 ------- 00:55 45419 10.0 flat 00:58 45420 2.0 arc 01:01 45421 3.0 arc 01:03 45422 3.0 arc ----- sequence 45423, plate -9999 ------- 01:26 45423 0.0 bias ----- sequence 45424, plate 1792 ------- 21.3 17.8 19.0 16.6 03:27 45424 10.0 flat 03:29 45425 2.0 arc 03:54 45426 901.0 target 04:17 45427 1201.0 target 04:35 45428 902.0 target ----- sequence 45429, plate 2744 ------- 04:48 45429 10.0 flat 04:50 45430 2.0 arc 05:04 45431 554.0 target ----- sequence 45432, plate 2449 ------- 11.0 n/a 23.1 n/a 07:34 45432 10.0 flat 07:37 45433 2.0 arc 07:56 45434 900.0 target 08:19 45435 1200.0 target 08:48 45436 1500.0 target 08:51 45437 10.0 flat 08:53 45438 2.0 arc ----- sequence 45439, plate 2187 ------- 83.3 48.3 88.5 72.3 09:04 45439 10.0 flat 09:06 45440 2.0 arc 09:34 45441 1501.0 target 09:37 45442 10.0 flat 09:40 45443 2.0 arc ----- sequence 45444, plate 2538 ------- 15.1 n/a 12.5 n/a 10:20 45444 10.0 flat 10:22 45445 2.0 arc 10:36 45446 624.0 target 10:41 45447 10.0 flat 10:43 45448 2.0 arc ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 03:16Z 2 1792 -34.97 -0.0047 60.27 0.0061 150.88 0.0072 1.000080 07:40Z 9 2449 228.93 -0.0003 53.11 0.0042 79.47 0.0027 1.000130 09:09Z 7 2187 226.48 0.0001 45.59 0.0034 86.62 -0.0315 1.000130 10:26Z 8 2538 177.80 0.0018 49.03 0.0045 -6.68 -0.0215 1.000180 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 03:17Z 2 1792 1.00008 -790 298 -200 -35 60.3 18.8 6 294 ---- 1.3" 07:40Z 9 2449 1.00013 -1284 -66 -175 229 53.1 18.3 4 262 ---- 1.3" 09:09Z 7 2187 1.00013 -1284 -42 -175 226 45.6 18.6 1 230 ---- 1.2" 10:27Z 8 2538 1.00018 -1778 -462 -175 178 49.0 18.1 1 240 ---- 1.5" ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 22:26Z 73 24 13 261 (W) 397 - Clear 22:58Z 71 23 8 267 (W) 384 - Clear 23:28Z 74 25 11 266 (W) 321 - Clear 23:58Z 70 23 5 193 (SSW) 354 - Clear 00:29Z 70 20 10 288 (WNW) 365 - Clear 01:02Z 69 23 3 263 (W) 384 - Clear 02:16Z 65 20 2 295 (WNW) 386 - Clear 02:47Z 65 19 5 341 (NNW) 393 - Clear 03:17Z 65 18 6 290 (WNW) 380 - Clear 03:47Z 66 17 3 308 (NW) 395 - Clear 04:18Z 65 17 4 284 (WNW) 399 - Clear 04:49Z 65 17 5 279 (W) 355 - Clear 05:20Z 65 18 5 270 (W) 380 - Mostly clear 05:50Z 65 18 4 191 (S) 363 - Mostly clear 06:21Z 63 18 4 180 (S) 509 - Mostly clear 06:52Z 64 18 2 185 (S) 610 - Mostly clear 07:22Z 64 18 1 227 (SW) 553 - Mostly clear 07:52Z 64 18 4 263 (W) 564 - Mostly clear 08:23Z 65 18 2 266 (W) 593 - Mostly clear 08:54Z 65 18 1 255 (WSW) 606 - Mostly clear 09:25Z 65 18 0 225 (SW) 585 - Mostly clear 09:57Z 65 18 0 219 (SW) 635 - Mostly clear 10:27Z 64 18 1 239 (WSW) 644 - Clear ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- 01:30Z - Began ventilation.
