APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Monday August 13, 2007 (MJD 54326) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Viktor Malanushenko Audrey Simmons Elena Malanushenko (day) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Yay more science! It was clear and photometric for most of the night, but we closed around 08:30Z for high humidity. We were able to finish cart 9 (plate 2802), cart 6 (plate 2800), cart 5 (plate 2628), and obtain signal on cart 2 (plate 2186). However, we noticed there is still an obvious light leak in sp2, so the data we took might have been effected by this. Note: The autofill system was attempted at the beginning of the night, but only sp2 started filling and not sp1. Manual filling was used instead for both sp1 and sp2 as a precaution. The autofill system might want to be checked again. A critical alert was sent out at 09:03Z about the secondary dewer being empty. We manually filled both spectrograhs and checked camera temperatures and dewers pressures, which were all okay. Misc watcher errors and other errors in problem & log section. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon ---------- Bob replaced all calib lamps to prevent us from burning at night. Spectro cooling is ok and we should use auto mode as before. The system is checked and worked properly. Steph declared test version of iop as a current v4_37_0. At afternoon the telescope has been checked. All systems work properly. Collimation checked and good for 14C, no adjustment nessasary. Bias 45804, Flat 45805, and Arc 85806 are checked. 01:00Z - Started ventillation. Night: ------ 02:05Z - Opened enclosure to clear skies. Cartridge 2, seguefaint118, plate 2186 mounted. NOTE: We were told that the autofill system should now be working, but as the start button was pressed, only sp2 started filling. We decided to run both sp1 and sp2 on manual fill just to be sure that both spectrograph dewers fill completely. Camera temperatures were checked, which were all normal. 02:29Z - No GSOGTF. fk5 was used. 03:00Z - Precals and first exposure attempted. However, we forgot to grab the instruments, so we started over. 03:12Z - New precals taken. 03:17Z - First 25 min exposure. Seeing 1.5" - 2.2" 03:46Z - 25 min exposure. 04:14Z - 20 min exposure. 04:34Z - Postcals. Plate not finished. 04:53Z - Cart 9, segue166 plate 2802 mounted. No GSFOGTF - used fk5 to find field. 04:54Z - Precals. 05:00Z - First 25 min exposure started. Seeing 1.5" 05:29Z - 25min exposure. 05:55Z - Postcals. PLATE FINISHED. 06:05Z - Cart 6, segue166 plate 2800 mounted. GSFOGTF. 06:10Z - Precals. 06:18Z - 15 min exposure. Seeing 1.3" - 1.8" 06:39Z - 20 min exposure. 06:59Z - 20 min exposure. 07:22Z - 25 min exposure. 07:51Z - 17 min exposure. 08:10Z - Postcals. PLATE FINISHED. 08:25Z - Cart 5, seguefaint155 plate 2628 mounted. GSFOGTF. 08:26Z - Precals. 08:33Z - 15 min exposure. Seeing 1.4" 08:53Z - Postcals. PLATE FINISHED. 09:00Z - Closed enclosure and stopped ventilation because of high humidity. 09:03Z - We recieved a critical error saying the ln2 specro dewer was empty. We noted the pressure on the dewers at this time (sp1 at 8psi, sp2 at 4psi). We immediately forced a manual fill untill both spectrographs completely full. We left the primary spectro dewer at 59lbs since the engineering crew will come in soon and it is capable to fill one last time. The cameras at 09:46Z read the following temperatures and pressures: sp1 (9psi) : #1 @ -92C #4 @ -91C sp2 (7psi) : #2 @ -92C #3 @ -91C 10:31Z - endNight rejoiced ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6888 22:17Z 22:39Z 100 O 5.55 11.06 51 ignore ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n): yes QA Procedures Done (y/n): yes UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 45801, plate -9999 ------- 22:24 45801 0.0 bias -bad 22:40 45802 0.0 bias -bad ----- sequence 45803, plate 2628 ------- 22:53 45803 0.0 bias -bad 23:17 45804 0.0 bias - good! 23:24 45805 10.0 flat postcalibration 23:26 45806 2.0 arc 23:43 45807 3.0 arc goSpecFocus 23:45 45808 3.0 arc ----- sequence 45809, plate 2186 ------- 01:04 45809 0.0 bias ----- sequence 45810, plate -9999 ------- 01:47 45810 0.0 bias ----- sequence 45811, plate 2186 ------- 03:13 45811 10.0 flat 03:15 45812 2.0 arc 03:44 45813 1501.0 target 04:13 45814 1501.0 target 04:36 45815 1201.0 target 04:39 45816 10.0 flat 04:41 45817 2.0 arc ----- sequence 45818, plate 2802 ------- 04:56 45818 10.0 flat 04:59 45819 2.0 arc 05:28 45820 1500.0 target 05:56 45821 1501.0 target 05:59 45822 10.0 flat 06:02 45823 2.0 arc ----- sequence 45824, plate 2800 ------- 06:13 45824 10.0 flat 06:15 45825 2.0 arc 06:35 45826 900.0 target 06:58 45827 1202.0 target 07:21 45828 1200.0 target 07:49 45829 1502.0 target 08:09 45830 1001.0 target 08:12 45831 10.0 flat 08:14 45832 2.0 arc ----- sequence 45833, plate 2628 ------- 08:28 45833 10.0 flat 08:31 45834 2.0 arc 08:52 45835 1030.0 target 08:56 45836 10.0 flat 08:59 45837 2.0 arc ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 03:23Z 2 2186 -46.84 -0.0028 53.78 0.0007 141.92 0.0437 1.000070 05:02Z 9 2802 183.83 0.0020 43.87 -0.0002 16.29 0.0448 1.000270 06:22Z 6 2800 248.19 -0.0035 71.91 0.0004 80.54 0.0186 1.000270 08:34Z 5 2628 22.15 -0.0025 64.41 0.0019 198.67 0.0167 1.000420 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 03:23Z 2 2186 1.00007 -691 397 -200 -47 53.8 14.2 14 87 - 1.5 05:02Z 9 2802 1.00027 -2666 -1155 -150 184 43.9 12.9 14 115 - 1.5 06:22Z 6 2800 1.00027 -2666 -1229 -150 248 71.9 12.8 18 113 - 1.3 08:34Z 5 2628 1.00042 -4148 -2466 -175 22 64.4 11.7 14 112 - 1.4 ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 21:39Z 70 54 5 222 (SW) 1279 - Clear 22:11Z 67 49 2 257 (WSW) 1189 - " 22:42Z 71 52 7 212 (SSW) 1179 - " 23:14Z 65 49 0 212 (SSW) 1168 - " 23:46Z 66 47 2 129 (SE) 1027 - " 00:18Z 63 45 5 73 (ENE) 1002 - " 00:50Z 63 44 12 82 (E) 1123 - " 01:14Z 62 44 15 81 (E) 1122 - " 01:44Z 61 44 12 74 (ENE) 1272 - " 02:15Z 59 45 15 92 (E) 1342 - " 02:45Z 58 46 16 83 (E) 1377 - " 03:16Z 57 46 14 84 (E) 1445 - " 03:47Z 57 46 12 84 (E) 1590 - " 04:17Z 56 46 10 89 (E) 1516 - " 04:47Z 55 45 10 111 (ESE) 1528 - " 05:18Z 55 45 11 107 (ESE) 1633 - " 05:49Z 55 46 20 111 (ESE) 1674 - " 06:20Z 54 46 14 113 (ESE) 1802 - " 06:53Z 54 46 22 109 (ESE) 1768 - " 07:24Z 54 46 16 87 (E) 1682 - " 07:55Z 53 46 11 106 (ESE) 1771 - High humidity 08:25Z 52 48 14 93 (E) 1740 - " 08:58Z 53 48 16 83 (E) 1844 - " 09:30Z 52 49 15 109 (ESE) 1954 - " 10:02Z 53 49 14 115 (ESE) 2111 - " 10:35Z 53 46 8 80 (E) 1958 - " ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- 01:00Z - Began ventilation. Inside MCP window shows that the sp2 door is closed, but it is actually open. There maybe is a faulty sensor? We had trouble obtaining good bias exposures because there still is an obvious light leak in sp1 for b2. This problem might effect the science we took tonight. The instrument change pin is getting stuck sometimes and is hard to put into place. I have witnessed this on several accounts the past couple nights. I make sure that the altitude is 90 degrees before putting in the pin and dont hit a stop button in until after slewend. Again, critical alerts are being sent out saying the spectrograph dewers are empty. Lines are hooked up and autofill is tried first, but only sp2 fills. We filled both spectrographs manually until overfull. All camera temperatures and dewers pressures are at normal levels. Note: We have been getting a couple of mis-readings from the lightning tracker on the APO Weather Status webpage. No radar returns or clouds anywhere near us and we got a reading at Aug 13 2007 19:45 GMT that the lightning was 20.1km. The same kind of thing happened last night (Aug 12th) as well.
