APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Wednesday December 5, 2007 (MJD 54440) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Elena Malanushenko (day) Stephanie Snedden (observer) Dmitry Bizyaev (observer) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! and a few post-M2-work tasks ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- We did a mix of enginering, spectroscopy and imaging. A quick optical collimation was done, before clouds came in. The donuts are better, but could still be improved on, when we dedicate some time to a pointing model. A pointing offset was determined, which should get us through the next few dark nights, but a new pointing model should be obtained soon. Plate 2824 - SEGUE faint - good signal, but not done yet Plate 2840 - MARVELS - one sequence done, but another sequence remains to be done Plate 2853 - SEGUE bright - good signal - *almost* done, but not quite. Strip 1458 N - done from mu 92 - 128 (including ramps). Seeing averaged 2.2 asec FWHM, but since we were at a fairly low altitude, this may have to serve. Please advise if you want it re-done. Spectrograph focus id now set for a temperature of 5 C. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: --------- French and team continue to work with mirror collimation. All other equipment are checked and work properly. Spectro collimation did not set because we run out of time. Diskspace is 232G on /data and 242G on /file. Ventilation is started at 23:25Z. Night: ------ We note that one of the M2 temperature sensors is disconnected. French knows about it: tmicro (Disconnected Sensor in M1B3:: 2007-12-05 23:12:06Z) We set up for optical collimation: 00:05Z - Bias taken in enclosure, in case we get to do science imaging. 00:50Z - Homed M1 and M2, relaxed M1 01:30Z - Drift at the meridian on 82 N skyGang results Cursor: o-observed (red), c-catalog (cyan), b-boresight, q-quit Err = True - HDR (astrotools convention for az-el) raBoreErr: 29.7", decBoreErr: -9.8", azErr: -55.4", elErr: -9.1" raBoreErr: 29.8", decBoreErr: -9.1", azErr: -55.4", elErr: -8.4" raBoreErr: 33.1", decBoreErr: -9.6", azErr: -61.6", elErr: -8.9" raBoreErr: 33.4", decBoreErr: -9.7", azErr: -62.1", elErr: -9.0" raBoreErr: 28.1", decBoreErr: -9.4", azErr: -52.3", elErr: -8.8" raBoreErr: 28.7", decBoreErr: -9.5", azErr: -53.4", elErr: -8.9" raBoreErr: 27.2", decBoreErr: -8.8", azErr: -50.6", elErr: -8.1" raBoreErr: 26.3", decBoreErr: -9.0", azErr: -49.0", elErr: -8.4" raBoreErr: 28.2", decBoreErr: -8.0", azErr: -52.5", elErr: -7.3" raBoreErr: 27.1", decBoreErr: -8.1", azErr: -50.4", elErr: -7.5" raBoreErr: 26.1", decBoreErr: -8.2", azErr: -48.5", elErr: -7.6" raBoreErr: 24.8", decBoreErr: -7.1", azErr: -46.1", elErr: -6.6" -------------------------------------------------------- raBoreErr: 28.5 +- 2.5", decBoreErr: -8.9 +- 0.8" azErr: -53.1 +- 4.7", elErr: -8.2 +- 0.8" muErr: 28.5 +- 2.5", nuErr: -8.9 +- 0.8" Correct idReport boresight values: xBore = -22.21 mm, yBore = -1.72 mm. We then did a rough optical collimation while clouds grew increasingly thick. We didn't have enough cloud-free time to get the best collimation. Donuts in the imager are still topheavy, but the collimation should be good enough to get in-spec FWHMs for imaging. We plan to tune the collimation again on the night we do a pointing model. 03:02Z - We mounted cartridge 1, plate 2824 to check that we can acquire an FK5 with the offset from skyGang. The offset did change somewhat after the collimation tweak. An offsetADR of +16, +36 should get an FK5 near to the fiber, until we do a new pointing model. 04:00Z - The clouds thinned enough that it became worthwhile to do spectroscopy. Cartridge 1, plate 2824 - seguefaint Obtained good signal in three exposures totaling 4200 s., but not enough to declare the plate done. 05:35Z - Cartridge 7, plate 2840 - MARVELS No Guide stars or FK5. We needed another spiralPattern. The new offsetADR is -4, +26, which is added onto the offset from the previous plate. The guide stars were quite faint. We decided to do ten exposures of 10 seconds each, then take a post-cal. The second set of 20 second exposures will have to wait for another night. ----- 06:55Z - We started imaging on 1458 N, SEGUE. The pointing errors were a bit high: 06:51Z startMu 90, run 7219 THETAF = 0.0146 degrees, 52.61 arcsec CT = 0.39613 arcsec/pixel SCALEF = 16.5976 arcsec/mm AMU0 = 90.8302 degrees ANU0 = 0.0034 degrees NCAT = 86 NSTARS = 48 AZ = 156.4397 degrees EL = 32.3239 degrees raBoreErr: -25.8", decBoreErr: 2.9" azErr: 25.3", elErr: 11.4" muErr: -20.9", nuErr: 12.2" Correct idReport boresight values: xBore = -23.48 mm, yBore = 1.26 mm. We corrected the error to get: THETAF = 0.0100 degrees, 35.99 arcsec CT = 0.39606 arcsec/pixel SCALEF = 16.5969 arcsec/mm AMU0 = 95.4773 degrees ANU0 = -0.0001 degrees NCAT = 84 NSTARS = 62 AZ = 155.7390 degrees EL = 34.1363 degrees raBoreErr: 0.8", decBoreErr: -0.1" azErr: -0.8", elErr: -0.4" muErr: 0.6", nuErr: -0.4 Correct idReport boresight values: xBore = -22.71 mm, yBore = -0.04 mm. We then ended this drift and started another. Run 7219 was declared bad ----- 07:25Z Stripe 1458 N, SEGUE - Run 7220, startMu 92 Skippy and focus loop were good from the beginning. 07:28Z - Start of ramp; mu=93, frame 10 07:36Z - Start of science, frame 24, mu=95 Seeing had degraded while we mounted the imager. We persisted because weather will probably be bad for imaging for several days, and this may be our last chance this dark run to get this strip. Also, since this is a somewhat low altitude stripe, the seeing criteria should be relaxed. Still, if this needs to be re-imaged, let us know. Seeing ranged from 1.8 - 2.7 asec FWHM, averaging 2.2 asec FWHM. 09:40Z - End of science, frame 231, mu 126 09:48Z - End of ramp, frame 244, mu 128 ----- 10:00Z - Since seeing had not improved, we went back to spectroscopy. Cartridge 2, plate 2853 - SEGUE bright We needed an FK5 and spiralPattern to find the guide stars. The new offsetADR was -7, +6 from the imager offsets. I think we want a pointing model after these next few dark nights. 10:27Z - Pre-cal showed that spectro collimation was off. We made a focus adjustment based on the air temperature and did another pre-cal. The spectrograph focus is now set for a temperature of 5C. 10:33Z - Started science exposures. We took four exposures totaling 5100s. This plate needs about one more exposure to be declared done. 12:58Z - endNight rejoiced ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame
