APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Thursday January 17, 2008 (MJD 54483) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Viktor Malanushenko (day) Elena Malanushenko (observer) Dan Oravetz (observer) Stephanie Sneddern (by phone) Connie Rockosi (by phone) Audrey Simmons (visit) Bill Boroski - visit ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- BR Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- We had clear sky for whole night and were doing spectroscopy. We observed several plates (2851,2615,1249,2604,1639,2858) but finished only one chunk 2615. It was bright time observations with Moon. CCD33 on imager shows high level of bias which is known cold related problem. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: ---------- All equipment are checked and work properly. Like two last days, there is a big difference between temperature inside both sp1 and sp2 (+1.5C and -0.7C ) and air temperature (-7.8C). By that reason, I adjusted collimation on -4C lower as curremt moment (see in 'problem' section). Spectro collimation set for -5.0C for spectro. Bias level og CCD33 is zero and we need to run bias with tbars unlutched and latched to fix the problem. Ventilation is started at 23:50Z. Cart 2 is mounted. Imager bias level for left part of CCD33 were on 100 counts bigger then usually. Called to Steph and she suggested us to repeat the bias with tbars unlatched and latched again. Night: ------ It is clear, cold -9C, 76% Moon. 00:30 Opened Cart 7 plate 1639, Orion. There is a previous obtained signal 4.1. Used fk5 to find the guider stars. Focus loop set the focus to 375 at 8.9C, seeing 2-2.2". 01:26 preCalibs 1:35 science 900. Stopped observations of this plate as the Moon is too close (9.3grad) and we decalred this exposure as bad. Cart 2, plate 2851, segueBright Fk5 & guess to find the guider stars. Seeing is about 1.5. This is one of the plates to re-observe. 2:06 preCal 02:13 science 1200 02:36 science 1200->900 02:54 postCalibs We obtained some signal on this plate but the SOS reduction shows very low (s/n)^2=0.9. We added this signal to database anyway. We will continue the observations of this plate. Cart 4, Plate 1249, Orion FSonGTF We need to apply 0.04 scale change for this plate. 03:17 preCalibs 03:24 science 900, no offset, guiding 03:43 sciecne 900 with +9 offset, no guiding 04:03 science 900 no offset, guiding 04:21 science 900 with -9 offset, no guiding 04:40 precalas it has been requested by sos. 04:48 sciecne 900, no offset, guiding 05:07 science 900, +9 offset, 05:26 science 900, central position 05:44 science 900, -9 offset 06:01 postcal We obtained 9.9 signal but need to continue to get requred 15 in r1 and r2. Cart 7, plate 1639, orion. This plate is close to Moon up to 9.3 grad, but we do not have any other plate to observe. FSonGTF. 6:17 PreCalibs 06:24 science 900, no offset, guiding 06:42 science 900, +9 offset, no guiding 07:01 postcal Formally we need to declare all exposures as bad but desided do not do it as it was Moony but clear and we possible obtained the good photons. We need to continue the observatiomns of this plate. Cart 8, plate 2858, segue. This plate has was done on MJD=54464 and unplugged. Now we plugged it again and re-observe on MJD 54481 and tonight. APO reduction does not calculate the results. We continue the observations to collect the data. FSonGTF 7:20 preCalibration 7:27 science 900 7:48 science 900 8:06 science 900 08:24 postCalib We observed this plate 6300 sec already and need to check if it is done or not. 8:05 Switched imager's t-bars to operation position and did bias. Instead of big bias level we got just zero. Connie said that this is a cold related known problem and it is ok. We do not need to do anything. The first run 7289 is failed. Run 7290 is a bias with tbars unlatched. Run 7291 is a bias with tbars latched.
