APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Tuesday June 3, 2008 (MJD 54621) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Howard Brewington (observer) Dmitry Bizyaev (observer) Audrey Simmons (swing) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Clear photometric night with moderate seeing. Finished plates: 2927 (cart 3), 2191 (cart 9), Added signal to plate 2829 (cart 4). We didn't see as much pollen as last 2 nights, but at the parking lot, not around the telescope, we saw some rare particles. Please check the mirror and tell should we go ahead and observe with this amount of pollen or it is better to stay closed. We leave the spectro dewar under 80 lb. Please check. We lost 1h 43 min due to the problem with sp1 (including lost 30 min exposure, readouts, new biases, etc.). ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: ---------- No problems during checkout. Spectro collimation set for ~17C tonight. Delayed ventilating until 01:20Z because of high wind gusts. Night: ------ 02:12Z Dome opened. Sky is clear. We don't see pollen now. We'll check it often. === Cart. 3 [late 2927 is on (seguefaint) fk5 didn't work spiral pattern used focus loop 03:19Z precal 03:33Z science 1200 -- 1500 05:01Z science 1500 postcal === 04:36Z cart. 8 plate 2191 (seguefaint) is on fk5 used 04:51Z precal 04:59Z science 1500 ... after ~15 min of this exposure AL axis got locked (AL ~ 64 deg, AZ ~ 76 deg). 05:18Z gotoField again GSOGTF 05:20Z One more precal after going to field 05:27Z science 1500 05:54Z science 1500 --> 1200 06:17Z postcal === 06:25Z cart.4 plate 2829 is on (seguefaint) GSOGTF 06:37Z precal 06:44Z science 1500 07:12Z science 1500 07:39Z science 1500 08:07Z midcal 08:14Z science 1800 -- lost due to sp1 camera problem, see below. 08:39Z suddenly we lost connection to sp1 camera. No errors coming into "sop". Exposure is going on. Cleared error; let's see if it will come back... no reply (CAMNAG: 2008-06-04 08:46:01Z) sp1 has status no_response ntp_check is ok. We are unable to get a bias: "error: sp1 is not responding. Electronic on camera is down?" We rebooted spectro mechanical box on Sp1. sp1> cc ping ... no response again "electronics power down?" sp2> cc ping returns "ping" 09:11Z spectro 1 box on telescope does not show any wrong indication. Shows no errors on its LCD display. Just an obvious information: time, etc. endStare -force did not help. spectro crates rebooted. sp2 responds normally on "ping". sp1 - not. Looks like sp1's mechanical box is alive: "mechSend s" at sp1 gives obvious information. We can't talk to sp1 camera. We tried logging off ports. We tried also a "cold reboot" of spectro crates. Same result: no connection to sp1. Call to Dan Long. We removed the black tape from sp1 camera block on telescope and found one red LED on "red sp1 camera: +15 CCD". Blue one is ok (amber). ~09:44Z We power cycled the block. Now we can ping the camera 1! Biases are ok. We are back to normal operation now. === Telescope Coolant Circulation pump (in the lower enclosure, below the staircase) shows indication below marked as normal. Please check.
