APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Friday October 2, 2009 (MJD 55107) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Elena Malanushenko Kaike Pan Support: Demitri Muna Craig Loomis Step Snedden Nathan De Lee Visitor: Huoming Shi, LAMOST ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! Marvels! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Observed MARVELS plates 3514A, 3514B, the rest of time was lost to weather. Problems: 1) We have problem of new plugged plates not being the plate database. Demitri Muna and Craig Loomis helped us to solve the problem. 2). It seems that guider does not work on plate 3632B (The same may be true for all new drilled MARVELS plates). Details are in the log. 3) We noticed that TPM says cartrdige 9 is on when cartridge 5 is actually mounted. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: --------- Telescope is checked, all systems were working properly. 23:40Z started ventilation. 00:18 ThAr lamp is on. MCP alert about PLC version mismatch although it works fine. Night: ------- 00:45Z enlcosure off. 01:00Z mount cartridge 4. guiderActor did not respond, did stageManager guiderActor restart and it fixed the problem. Find guider stars on gotoField. 01:25Z started MARVELS calib. MARVELS1.2009-10-03T01:25:48.890.fits, PMT: 45200 MARVELS1.2009-10-03T01:27:53.220.fits, PMT: 322 MARVELS1.2009-10-03T01:32:28.820.fits, PMT, 45500 01:20Z cart 4, plate 3514A, field1348. 01:46Z started 50 min exposure. T01:46:01.850.fits Partly cloudy with good seeing (DIMM reports 0.8"). No broken fibers. T01:46:01.850.fits PMT=23.628000 02:20Z: Kaike checked and found that plugged plates: 3632, 3633, and 3638 are not in the plate DB. Then he checked and confirmed that plugMapM files are in ../scan/55107 directory on plate-mapper3. We he tried to loaded and active these plates, the "loadPlPlugMapMFiles" gave errors: "there is no entry in the plate table for plate_id==xxxx, skipping ...". Demitri and Craig were contacted for help. Find one star on gotoFiled, applied some offset and found more guider stars. Science with 50 min exposure. Partly cloudy, but PMT was still ok but highly variable. Seeing ~1" Guiding stars in fiber 6 and 8 are binaries. T02:57:55.240.fits, PMT=29.247334 Data is checked and no bad fibers are found. Calibration Trio: PMT T03:51:59.710.fits TIO 44680.090 T03:54:06.140.fits THAR 323.03125 T03:58:41.640.fits TIO 45219.910 03:50Z The original schedule was to observe plate 3632A on cartridge 5. But at the moment, it was not ready yet. We called Nathan, and proposed to observe plate 3515A on Cart 9. Nathan gave ok to us, so we mount cartridge 9 and continue observations while Demitri is working on the issue loading new plugging plates into the plate database. 03:55 Found stars on plate 3515A after soem offsets. Started science exposure but in ~10 minuts PMT dropped to less them 10 and it was going to be worse. After about ~30 minutes of integration, we felt that the exposure will not be useful even we finished 50 min integration. Since Demitri has fixed the plate-table problem, Kaike was able to load new plugged plates into the plate DB and loadCartyridges, we decided to aborted the science exposure, and switch to plate 3632A. 04:55Z Calibration trio: PMT T04:59:57.440.fits TIO 47376.547 T05:02:02.750.fits THAR 321.81876 T05:06:38.280.fits TIO 48409.273 04:58Z Cart 5 plate 3632 Side B. This is one of new designed plates that have 16 designed guiding stars. However, old cartridges (that MARVELS observatios use) have only 11 guiding fibers. This prevent us from use these plates last night. Thanks to Mike Blanton, Dan Long etc who worked together to created plPlugMapP files with only 11 guiding stars today. Thanks to Demitri and Craig who helped to allow us to loaded these plates into the plate database. 05:18Z one star was found on gotoField. After some test tcc offsets, we could find one more start. Started guider, but we still did not get more starts. Then we turned guider off, and applied offsets. After several attempts, we could see four stars in 2,4,6,8 fibers very close to edges. Started guider, and found guider did not do its job. When one or two stars are in their fibers, guider on would not bring more stars. In some case, it actually made things worse. In other cases, it might center one star but moved others out of fibers. In frame # 702-730, we have fours stars in guiding fibers, but guider failed to center all of them. It actually drove some of them off fibers. 06:40 Z. Clouds and strong nearby return and it is going to be worse. Enclosure is on but we still keep ventilation. Closed PT. 09:00Z SP1 temperature reached 13.2 C, about the same as ambient temperature, we turned it off. 11:45Z endNight rejoiced. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8073 00:42Z 00:53Z 100 O 91.58 94.22 32 ignore ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n): yes QA Procedures Done (y/n): yes UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 IDL> marvels N File Type 0 T01:25:48.890.fits TIO 45141.363 5416.2197 1 T01:27:53.220.fits THAR 322.23126 738.57245 2 T01:32:28.820.fits TIO 45540.000 5415.8750 3 T01:46:01.850.fits STAR 23.628000 856.27173 4 T02:38:06.680.fits TIO 47370.910 5405.5312 5 T02:40:14.230.fits THAR 322.70624 739.48657 6 T02:44:49.730.fits TIO 47367.273 5408.4609 7 T02:57:55.240.fits STAR 29.247334 985.42957 8 T03:51:59.710.fits TIO 44680.090 5395.5596 9 T03:54:06.140.fits THAR 323.03125 739.98029 10 T03:58:41.640.fits TIO 45219.910 5405.0391 11 T04:59:57.440.fits TIO 47376.547 5398.2451 12 T05:02:02.750.fits THAR 321.81876 739.87311 13 T05:06:38.280.fits TIO 48409.273 5399.0200 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 22:33Z 56 10 8 262 (W) 1001 - 23:05Z 53 8 18 300 (WNW) 1054 - 23:35Z 55 10 2 262 (W) 1050 - 00:07Z 53 10 10 273 (W) 1097 - 00:39Z 51 10 6 250 (WSW) 1335 - 01:11Z 50 11 10 231 (SW) 1398 - 01:44Z 52 12 15 231 (SW) 1641 - 02:16Z 50 12 13 212 (SSW) 1608 - 02:48Z 52 10 15 218 (SW) 1592 - 03:32Z 51 10 17 226 (SW) 1797 - 04:04Z 50 9 18 231 (SW) 1884 - 04:36Z 51 8 14 226 (SW) 1919 - 05:08Z 52 9 15 260 (W) 2291 - 05:29Z 52 12 13 257 (WSW) 2104 - 06:01Z 51 13 16 257 (WSW) 1748 - 06:33Z 50 14 12 262 (W) 1877 - 07:05Z 50 14 14 263 (W) 1848 - 07:17Z 51 14 12 261 (W) 1788 - 08:09Z 51 14 12 263 (W) 1797 - 08:41Z 49 13 13 233 (SW) 1886 - 09:14Z 49 16 12 237 (WSW) 1970 - 09:46Z 49 16 11 256 (WSW) 2003 - 10:18Z 50 14 11 261 (W) 1932 - 10:50Z 49 15 8 268 (W) 1904 - 11:22Z 49 15 9 264 (W) 1991 - ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- 23:25Z - Began ventilation.
