APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Saturday January 16, 2010 (MJD 55213) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Observers: Alaina Shelden Audrey Simmons Steph Snedden (afternoon) Support: Fritz Stauffer (platedb reconnect) Craig Loomis (MCP consultant) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- We encountered a miscommunication problem with the MCP tonight, which forced us to lose some science time. We also lost about 1.5 hours due to thick clouds. We observed in clear to cloudy conditions: Cart 13, plate 3736 Cart 16, plate 3751 Cart 14, plate 3766 (DONE) Cart 11, plate 3778 (DONE) We did not operate the DIMM last night, nor tonight, because it was reading values around 22" and the images looked terribly out of focus. There was also an irregular and rather loud noise coming from the camera itself. Until it can be looked at, I suggest the observers not use it for the time being. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: ---------- David tightened down the mapper camera and angled it so that all fibers were visible and in better focus. Cartridge 11 was remapped by Diana after the adjustment. Guider dark and flat taken BOSS spectro dark taken 23:30Z - Enclosure ventilation started. Cartridge 13 mounted. MCP Menus were still showing the MCP as unavailable from control room stations, but the connection was fine from the telescope laptop, and fine via all tcc connections. At any rate, after an MCP reboot and acknowledging the heartbeat error, the control room sessions reconnected. MCP operations from STUI work properly (as far as I tested), so the problem appears benign, despite the heartbeat alerts. Fritz asked to have the sdss-db backup powered on. It looks physically like sdssfiles1 was accidentally restarted. This caused us to lose the platedb for a bit because we had to get the backup to sdss-db started and then Fritz had to reset which computer was primary and which secondary. Night: ------ 00:40Z - Opened enclosure. Delayed getting data on cartridge 13 due to a problem getting the MCP going after its reboot. It turned out to be a simple misunderstanding about at what point the "hub startNubs mcp" was done. Craig did ask us to try to tickle the original problem tomorrow afternoon (see if we can get an MCP Menu to come up in an "unavailable" state from sdsshost2). 02:10Z - GSFOGTF on cart 13, BOSS plate 3736. 02:16Z - Hartmanns 107743-44. 02:22Z - Cals 107745-46. 02:41Z - 15 min exposure 107747.
