APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Monday March 15, 2010 (MJD 55271) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Audrey Simmons Dan Oravetz Dan Long (support) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Much of the night was lost on account of several problems, both hardware and weather related. High humidity kept us closed for the first half of the night, and most of the last half. During a break in the humidity, we tried opening but the enclosure stopped half-way and would not move. Dan Long came to the site and determined that the problem was due to the power rail shoes not making contact with the rails (see log for more details). We opened the last few hours and gathered a few exposures on cart 12, plate 3865. A metal part of the steering arm underneath the lindy cart broke. It is impossible to change cartridges with one person beause the cart won't steer. During afternoon checkout, several biases and darks were taken with the lights on in the enclosure. For these exposures, SOS showed high, red values. After we turned the lights off, we took some more exposures and they were normal in SOS. Does this mean there is a light leak?? ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: ---------- 22:12Z - Pinged all actors, took some biases and darks. 01:16Z - Fiducials and mirror numbers checked. 01:20Z - initNight complained about low disk space on sdsshost2 for astrolog, /data/photo, mcptpm, skycat, and /data/astro/. So MJD's 54456-54500 were compressed (and it took 6.5 hrs to complete). Did not start ventilating due to falling snow and high humidity. Night: ------ Took a bunch of biases and darks. 06:15Z - Humidity improved. Started ventilating. Mounted cart 12. Major problem with lindy cart. The metal part of the steering arm that resides underneath of the front part of the cart broke. Therefore, it is just about impossible to steer the cart without two people. 06:35Z - Started to open the building (in slow mode) but after it reached about half-way, the building stopped and would not move from the controlers at either end. The fault alarm on the building was going off. We made sure that the rail heaters were turned on and there were no icicles on the rails, and the control box read 0.0 (not an overload). Also after a visual inspection with binoculars of the power rail shoes, we verified that there was nothing obviously wrong with them and they looked like they were making contact with the rails. However, the building stopped directly on one of the connector gaps on the rails. 08:42Z - Dan Long arrived on site and we used the wenches to close the enclosure. Humidity was still a problem at this point, so we stopped ventilating as well. He believes that one shoe landed upon the black connector gap, while the other one was faulty and did not make contact with the rail when it should have. He will investigate it more in the morning. 10:17Z - Humidity got better. We started ventilating and opened (with the supervison of Dan Long). It seems that opening the building in the fast mode instead of the slow mode worked because the shoes were able to get over that gap quickly. 10:18Z - gotoField cart 12, BOSS plate 3865. 10:21Z - Hartmanns 111921-22. 10:26Z - Cals 111923-24. 10:33Z - 15 min exposure 111925. Seeing 1.9" 10:54Z - 15 min exposure 111928. 11:11Z - 15 min exposure 111927. 11:30Z - 15 min exposure 111928. 11:46Z - Cals 111929-30. Not finished with this plate yet.
