APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Sunday April 25, 2010 (MJD 55312) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Howard Brewington Steph Snedden ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- MARVELS Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- While trying to slew to field on cartridge 9, we repeatedly had rotator aborts. This happened when the rotator was at about -60 degrees and moving in the negative direction. Altitude was about 60 degrees. The problem appeared to be physical - maybe a binding issue, because when we started a slew the rotator acceleration was jerky. Rotator moves in the positive direction were trouble free. When we brought the telescope down to 15 degrees alt so we could better look at the rotator, the negative direction rotator acceleration was smooth and the move succeeded. So, if you try to duplicate the problem, try it at high altitude. However, we subsequently had a similar slew with cartridge 7 that succeeded without any problems, so no guarantees that you can duplicate the problem. 25 minutes lost to the problem. Observed the following MARVELS cartridges: Cartridge Plate Field --------- ----- ----- 4 3708B GLA273 5 3894A HAT-P-3 8 3413A HD88133 8 3413B XO-1 9 3796B FIELD1068 9 3796A FIELD1348 5 3894B K15 7 3902B K21 ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: ---------- 23:20Z Started the checkout 23:25Z Restarted the Watcher servers 23:44Z Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on /dev/sda3 142G 130G 4.7G 97% / /dev/sda1 99M 30M 64M 33% /boot /dev/sdb1 917G 841G 30G 97% /data sdssfiles1p:/data1/data 1.8T 117G 1.7T 7% /files 23:47Z Turned on MARVELS ThAr lamp 00:09Z Verified that the STUI actors were happy; also checked the status of the hub25m and perms. 00:05Z - Started enclosure ventilation 01:40 - Opened enclosure Night: ------ 02:31Z - Cartridge 4, plate 3708B - GL273 - MARVELS --------------------------------------------------- Seeing 1.0 asec or less; Altitude=46 deg Needed plus dec offset to find stars Filename Type T02:16:37.910.fits TIO 45086.636719 T02:18:45.540.fits ThAr 250.925003 T02:23:22.240.fits TIO 43835.453125 T02:33:59.530.fits Science 34.967335 There was a wide dynamic range, with many faint spectra.
