APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Saturday June 5, 2010 (MJD 55353) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Alaina Shelden Steph Snedden Support: Afternoon Mark Klaene (gcamera troubleshooting / shutter removal) Joe Huehnerhoff ( " " " " " " " ) Craig Loomis (troubleshooting from afar) Night Craig Loomis (guider flat workarounds +) Paul Harding ( " " " " ) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- We are using the guide camera without a shutter. In the afternoon, we found that the shutter driver circuitry did not supply enough voltage to open the shutter. The shutter was then removed. We need to use a workaround to take guider flats (see notes in the log section), but otherwise are able to get science photons. Paul made contact with the manufacturer (Apogee) about the problem, and will follow up with them. Observed the following BOSS plates. None declared done, but useable signal on all. Cart 17, plate 4044 - not done Cart 14, plate 4008 - not done Cart 13, plate 4057 - not done Cart 10, plate 4056 - not done Cart 16, plate 4078 - not done The last few nights we have had a lot of pollen. I am sure we have some on M1. Please CO2 clean it while the humidity is low. It's a good thing we re-aluminize soon. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: ---------- Just after I woke up at home, while making coffee, I kept hearing the beeps of incoming emails. Sez I to myself, "It's Saturday, this many emails can't be good". Sure enough, David S. had read the night log and sent out the warning about the guider failing to display images at the end of last night. The symptoms were all those of a failed shutter. After phoning just about everyone on the 2.5m day staff who was not on vacation, I got hold of Joe H. at the site and Mark at home. Mark came to the site. He and Joe unmounted the guide camera, and swapped in the spare shutter. By this time I was on site and we took some test exposures. The shutter did not open, but Joe saw it "flutter" (a very small motion) a couple of times. We then took the camera back to the lab to test the shutter with another power supply. Mark found that the shutter would open with 5.2 V applied (it is a 6V shutter). We are pretty sure there is a problem in the circuit that drives the shutter. This means it won't get fixed until APOGEE can send us spare parts, or we find a faulty component ourselves. We wound up just removing the shutter, in an attempt to go on sky tonight. The remainder of afternoon shutdown was without problems, but no spectro focus or tilt check was done because we were dealing with the guide camera. Night: ----- Without the shutter, a standard 0.5 second guider flat showed bright ghost images because of the lamps continuing to shine on the CCD during readout. We used the first 1.5 hours of the night to figure out the workaround (among other things). Basically, it is this: 1) In STUI SOP, set all Guider Flat Time text boxes to 0.0. 2) Do the usual goToField with Hartmanns, arc and flat. 3) Turn OFF the flat field lamps, keep the ff petals closed. 4) From the command line, issue "guider flat time=10". During that 10 second exposure, turn the ff lamps on for about 0.5 sec from STUI MCP (on, then off again just as soon as you see the lamps light in the status cartoon). 5) Check the guider flat in ds9. Fiber counts of 40,000 - 50,000 are good. Mainly, avoid saturation or counts that are too low. 6) Use 5 second exposures for setting up on the field, then switch to 15 second guider exposures. That seemed to give us the best S/N. The above is the workaround that we used for all cartridges observed tonight. 01:30Z - Started ventilation 02:45Z - Opened enclosure 04:23Z - Cartridge 17, plate 4044 - BOSS ---------------------------------------- Offset -.002,+.002 to get guide stars.
