APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Friday November 19, 2010 (MJD 55520) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Howard Brewington Audrey Simmons Steph Snedden (afternoon/support) Dan Long (support) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Completed sparse plug test with cart 10, and verified that the focus rings for both cameras are in the center of their range. Adjusted the wavelength values for cart 13. After getting all black/yellow WAVEMID values, we recieved red out-of-spec WSIGMA values even though all cameras were in focus and collimated. At 08:00Z, we had a critical alert for a warming SP2 red camera. The red camera could not undergo a secondary fill, but the blue side was able to. Steph and Dan Long were notified. We hooked up the 12V power connector to the connector next to the solenoid and it began to fill right away. Our attempt to issue another stop/startFillSequence after doing this was unsuccessful. Every ~1.5 hours afterwards, we hooked the connector up so it could complete a secondary fill. Observed the following MARVELS fields: Cart 6, plate 3088B Broken: 49/50, 65/66, 69/70, 87/88, 105/106, 109/110 Cart 3, plate 3705A Broken: 27/28, 49/50 Cart 4, plate 3078B Broken:31/32, 49/50, 51/52, 89/90 Cartridge 1 is missing from the plate database webpage, but it shows up in platdb showActive. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: ---------- 23:30Z Started the afternoon checkout. When we tried to take our first arc, we noticed that neon lamp #1 in the System Status cartoon was turning on and off. We went down to the enclosure and saw that the neon lamp was on, but very dim. Dan brought out the box of spare lamps, and when we removed and compared the lamp, we saw that it was longer than the others by about a cm. We replaced that lamp, and all was well. As Dan said in his day log, the longer lamp appeared not to be making good contact - the cap was only contacting at the edge. 23:00Z - turned on fans. Night: ------ 00:35Z - Began sparse plug tests with cart 10. Hartmanns 122500-01. All cameras in focus. 5 sec arc 122502. 10 sec arc 122503. 20 sec arc 122504. Flat 122505. Arc 122506. Flat 122507. When moving the collimators, we hit a limit on sp2. 02:04Z - Moved rings back to their origional positions for sp2 and tried again. 02:16Z - Moved red camera on sp2 -50 degrees. In focus. 02:26Z - Moved blue camera on sp2 -43 degrees. All in focus. 02:33Z - Moved both cameras on sp2 to begin test again. 02:45Z - Hartmanns 122524-25. All in focus. 5 sec arc 122526. 10 sec arc 122527. 20 sec arc 122528. 03:03Z - Moved all cameras focus rings by -25 degrees. 03:08Z - Hartmanns 122531-32. 5 sec arc 122534. 10 sec arc 122535. 20 sec arc 122536. 03:27Z - Moved all cameras focus rings by -25 degrees. Should be back at home positions. Hartmanns 122566-67. 04:55Z - Mounted cart 13 for some additional tests. Hartmanns. 05:34Z - Adjusted blue camera rings. 05:33Z - Hartmanns 122576-77. 05:36Z - Cals 122578-79. Red values for b2 and r2 wavemid values. Clouds too thick to open. We decided to work on fixing these numbers. As we fixed the WAVEMID values, the WSIGMA values turned red and out-of-spec. We could not understand this because after some double checking, reassured ourselves that all cameras were in focus and the collimators were in their correct positions. See exposures 122579-89. 07:45Z - Opened enclosure to partly cloudy skies. Mounted cart 6 and force-filled the spectrographs. 08:00Z - Received a critical alert about a warming SP2 red camera. We issued primary and secondary fills. Dan Long and Steph were notified. We manually hooked up the connector that allowed a secondary fill, and proceeded to do so the next few hours until the end of the night. 08:48Z - Calibrations.
