APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Sunday January 9, 2011 (MJD 55571) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Howard Brewington Kaike Pan Steph Snedden (afternoon) Support: Paul Harding ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- BOSS Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Thanks Bob, for fixing the Lindy cart handle! Under partly cloudy to mostly clear sky and 1.6-3.5" seeing, we observed cart 13, pl 4306. cart 11, pl 4553. cart 14, pl 4488. DONE. cart 16, pl 4504. DONE. cart 17, pl 3966. DONE. cart 12, pl 3841. Guider focus loop drove focus away. When we had both focus loop and scale loop running, focus loop drove focus away from its best set up. We guess that this is due to that focus loop and scale loop do not collaborate well: When a scale correction is applied, next guider images will have donuts for guiding stars that confuse focus loop, and causes focus loop make correction in the wrong direction, and run away from the best focus postion. Paul found that rotating floor is about 5-8 degree warmer than mirrors and ambient air temperature. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: ---------- 23:13Z - Collimation checked with cartridge 12, and all was found to be in spec. Test gcamera dark, BOSS bias, dark, flat and arc taken. 23:30Z - Ventilation started, doors opened. Cartridge 13 mounted. Cartridge 15 in the bay did not have one fiber access cover on. It was found in the lab and put on. Checkout at the telescope was without problems. All requested plates were on their cartridges in the bay. All actors found to be alive and well. Night: ----- 00:20Z enclosure off. 00:50Z cart 13, plate 4306. Slow to the Field. Then a manual full hartmann was taken to check focus. 01:00Z gotoField. 01:03:39 hartSp2: r=-361, b=-1.2, txt=OK; sp2Temp = 0.0 01:03:43 hartSp1: r=252, b=0.9, txt=OK; sp1Temp = 0.4 01:25Z Paul tested new version of guider code. We are delayed 10 mintues. Got two exposure under clear sky and 1.5" seeing. But the field was not far from the Moon. We did not got much signals on these exposures ~1.3 for blue camera. BOSS ICC stayed at legible status for 15 second before pre-reading arc, but it recovered and reading out the arc exposure, but failed at flats.Howard took a flat manually, BOSS ICC stayed at legible status again. Then he decided to reloaded BOSS ICC controllers, take bias. gotoField again. This field was not far from the Moon, maybe 40 degrees. We really need correct Zappas values in plateDB. 02:19:32 hartSp2: r=-585, b=-2.0, txt=OK; sp2Temp = -0.9 02:19:47 hartSp1: r=-143, b=-0.5, txt=OK; sp1Temp = -0.5 Craig restarted guider (crashed?) that confused sop. Exposures did not reading out at its normal pace instead staying at legible status for 30-60 seconds. Restarted sop fixed it. 10 minutes lost. 02:48Z started sciences. clear sky with 2.0" seeing. We got three exposures on this plate. Paul found that temperature of rotating floor is about 8 degrees higher than mirror temperature and ambient temperature (mirror and ambient temperatures agree each other within .5 degrees).
