APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Monday January 14, 2002 (MJD 52289) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Swing: Pete Newman Night: Dan Long Mike Harvenek ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Forecast indicates a spectroscopy night. Should it clear we could switch to imaging at any time as the moon is down all night. ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- It was definitely a spectroscopic night. Through variable clouds four plates were observed( 1 802, 3 825, 8 572, 5 525 ). Two were declared done ( 3 825, 8 572 ). Outside of the weather there were no problems. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- It was a spectroscopy night. Variable high cloud was at times thick enough to prevent meaningful observation. Despite the clouds we observed 4 plates and declared 2 done, and nearly a third. Weather notwithstanding it was a refreshingly trouble free night. 1 802: ------- Guide stars seen on slew. The first exposure was started at the end of twilight, which was about 15 minutes before the plate became officially available. This photo-z-like plate only got to 30.8 (S/N)^2 before it passed beyond observability. It was decided not to declare it done in case it is deemed that that first exposure is not useable. It would only take another single decent exposure on this plate to make absolutely sure it is done, and the consequences of finding out after it is unplugged that it wasn't done would mean that more than 3 hours of observing would be lost. Additionally the smear was taken under quite cloudy conditions and is probably not very useful. 3 825: ------- Guide stars on slew lots of clouds toward the end. Had to stop before reaching goal (S/N)^2 since this plate was getting too close to zenith. 8 572: ------- Guide stars on slew Clouds trash the first two exposures, leave during the third giving a whopping (S/N)^2 as we had bumped the exposure time up to 25 minutes to try and get over 2 (S/N)^2 through the clouds. Unfortunately since the first two exposures fell below the minimum signal, two additional exposures were needed even though we could have called it done in one additional exposure based on signal alone. Declared done. 3 825 ( second mounting ): --------------------------- no guide stars or fk5. Spiral pattern located it about a dozen arcseconds away. Got the additional signal we needed in just one more exposure. Declared done. 5 525: ------- Guide stars seen once the altitude offset for 825 was removed. Clouds nearly shut us out on this one. Only one of the four exposures had any (S/N)^2 entries above 2.0. A smear was attempted, but was severely compromised by clouds. Another should be taken the next time this plate is observed. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Stripe Flavor Lambda Last Begin End Frame Comments ------------------------------------------------------------------ 2889 100 O ignore 165.15 -168.48 33 ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot --------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot --------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 00:14 12641 0.0 bias ----- sequence 12642, plate 802 ------- 37.4 30.8 53.5 38.4 01:40 12642 10.0 flat 01:42 12643 2.0 arc 02:09 12644 1200.0 target 02:32 12645 1201.0 target 02:57 12646 1201.0 target 03:20 12647 1200.0 target 03:23 12648 10.0 flat 03:25 12649 2.0 arc 03:50 12650 1201.0 target 04:13 12651 1201.0 target 04:35 12652 1201.0 target 04:45 12654 240.0 smear 04:48 12655 10.0 flat 04:50 12656 2.0 arc ----- sequence 12657, plate 825 ------- 11.8 14.3 11.1 11.0 05:13 12657 10.0 flat cont'd below 05:15 12658 2.0 arc 05:39 12659 1201.0 target 06:02 12660 1200.0 target 06:32 12661 1622.0 target 06:38 12662 240.0 smear 06:41 12663 10.0 flat 06:43 12664 2.0 arc ----- sequence 12665, plate 572 ------- 26.9 2.09 22.9 17.9 07:04 12665 10.0 flat 07:06 12666 2.0 arc 07:38 12667 1501.0 target 08:06 12668 1500.0 target 08:33 12669 1501.0 target 08:58 12670 1202.0 target 09:17 12671 901.0 target 09:24 12672 240.0 smear 09:26 12673 10.0 flat 09:29 12674 2.0 arc ----- sequence 12675, plate 825 ------- 4.9 5.2 4.8 4.6 09:54 12675 10.0 flat ------------------- 09:57 12676 2.0 arc 16.7 19.5 15.9 15.6 10:21 12677 1202.0 target 10:28 12678 240.0 smear ----- sequence 12679, plate 525 ------- 3.8 2.6 3.7 2.7 10:44 12679 10.0 flat 10:46 12680 2.0 arc 11:17 12681 1201.0 target 11:40 12682 1200.0 target 12:03 12683 1200.0 target 12:26 12684 1201.0 target 12:33 12685 240.0 smear 12:36 12686 10.0 flat 12:38 12687 2.0 arc ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- getclock Axis position and calibration offset Scale Time Ct Plate time Az El Rot Factor ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 01:38 1 802 1011058704 22.39 .0053 55.09 .0008 198.65 .0001 1.000130 05:22 3 825 1011072162 100.75 .0036 62.41 .0006 -97.70 -.0068 1.000130 07:11 8 572 1011078694 54.10 .0037 47.58 .0004 223.00 -.0068 1.000130 09:52 3 825 1011088347 258.73 .0038 61.40 .0040 97.90 -.0107 1.000130 11:06 5 525 1011092799 39.46 .0033 52.79 .0015 213.59 -.0195 1.000130 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- EndNight completed successfully.
