APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Tuesday May 14, 2002 (MJD 52409) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Mike Harvanek (APO) Jurek Krzesinski (APO) Dan Long (APO; swing) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Six plates finished (902, 952, 955, 919, 924, 819) and usable data obtained for another plate (977). SoS declared one smear bad (that for 902). One xsigma value was in the yellow; all other xsigma and wsigma values were in the black. The spectrographs remained in focus throughout the night. A few minor problems (the cloud camera hung twice and we lost the servers once); no major problems. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon checkout (from Dan): ------------------------------ Checked spectro focus. Adjusted focus some ( about half of what was applied last night but in the other direction ( sp1> mechPiston 3000, sp2> mechPiston 1500 ). All sigma numbers and wavelength ranges are in the black ( r2 wavelength showed yellow for cartridge 9 ). Frame numbers 15073 - 15078 on plate 819 are all engineering data and should not be used for reductions. Those exposures have all been declared bad to prevent use in real data reduction. A check was also done using cartridge 9. Exposures 15079 - 15088 on plate 902 were also engineering data so were declared bad. Note: When running goSpecFocus wait at least 30 seconds for the HgCd lamps to warm up before returning on the line asking if the flat field screens are closed. The first frame can have bogus values for the blue side if you don't. Night Activities: ----------------- Light clouds (and a little moon) at the beginning of the evening so we began with spectroscopy. Plate 902 (cartridge 9): Guide stars on the gotoField. The first exposure was degraded by a bright sky (exposure started too early combined with pointing both west and near the moon) and the data from b1 and b2 are NOT usable for this frame. NOT including this first exposure, this plate was finished in 3 exposures. S0S reported the smear for this plate to be bad (3 red values, 1 yellow). Exposure 15095 had an incorrect exposure time. Plate 902 did not appear in the bottom portion of the "Plan a day's plugging activities" database even before we declared this plate done. Since we have declared this plate done, there is no way to investigate this oddity. Plate 952 (cartridge 7): Guide stars on the gotoField. Done in 3 exposures. The call for postcals came too late (i.e., we had already changed the cartridge). Plate 955 (cartridge 2): Guide stars on the gotoField. When combined with previous data (52407), this plate was done in 2 exposures. Plate 919 (cartridge 4): Guide stars on the gotoField. When combined with previous data (52405), this plate was done in 1 exposure (just barely). The low s/n on this exposure was due to thickening clouds. Plate 924 (cartridge 3): Guide stars on the gotoField. When combined with previous data (52405, 52408), this plate was done in 1 exposure. Plate 819 (cartridge 1): No guide stars because of clouds. FK5 star found easily; guide stars found shortly thereafter. When combined with previous data (52408), this plate was done in 1 exposure. Plate 977 (cartridge 6): Guide stars on the gotoField. Two good exposures obtained before sky brightened. NO smear obtained. The cloud camera hung twice tonight. We restarted it in the standard manner. The servers died around 1007Z. A "start_servers -K" did not bring them back successfully. However, a "ptvmeReset" followed by a "start_servers -K" worked. We lost only about 2 minutes to this problem. All xsigma and wsigma values were in the black except for 1 yellow value. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot --------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 15089, plate -9999 ------- 00:38 15089 0.0 bias 01:17 15090 0.0 bias ----- sequence 15091, plate 902 ------- 24.9 18.4 23.2 26.4 DONE 02:42 15091 10.0 flat 02:44 15092 2.0 arc 03:05 15093 901.0 target 03:33 15094 1501.0 target 03:56 15095 22066.0 target 04:27 15096 1502.0 target 04:33 15097 240.0 smear ----- sequence 15098, plate 952 ------- 23.5 21.6 22.6 15.8 DONE 04:50 15098 10.0 flat 04:53 15099 2.0 arc 05:21 15100 1501.0 target 05:50 15101 1505.0 target 06:13 15102 1201.0 target 06:20 15103 240.0 smear ----- sequence 15104, plate 955 ------- 12.1 12.3 12.8 12.4 tonight 06:32 15104 10.0 flat 4.2 3.2 4.5 3.8 52407 06:34 15105 2.0 arc ------------------- 06:58 15106 1201.0 target 16.3 15.5 17.3 16.2 DONE 07:21 15107 1201.0 target 07:27 15108 240.0 smear ----- sequence 15109, plate 919 ------- 2.1 2.2 2.6 2.2 tonight 07:40 15109 10.0 flat 13.5 10.8 14.7 13.2 52405 07:42 15110 2.0 arc ------------------- 08:17 15111 1202.0 target 15.6 13.0 17.3 15.4 DONE ----- sequence 15112, plate 924 ------- 3.9 4.1 3.9 5.7 tonight 08:41 15112 10.0 flat 7.8 7.8 7.3 9.3 52405 08:43 15113 2.0 arc 5.1 5.2 4.9 6.8 52408 09:08 15114 1202.0 target ------------------- 16.8 17.1 16.1 21.8 DONE ----- sequence 15115, plate 819 ------- 8.4 6.6 10.7 9.9 tonight 09:26 15115 10.0 flat 8.5 7.3 11.4 10.0 52408 09:28 15116 2.0 arc ------------------- 09:52 15117 1200.0 target 16.9 13.9 22.1 19.9 DONE 09:59 15118 240.0 smear ----- sequence 15119, plate 977 ------- 10.7 10.6 8.4 12.4 10:16 15119 10.0 flat 10:19 15120 2.0 arc 10:37 15121 901.0 target 10:55 15122 900.0 target ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 02:40Z 9 902 211.70 0.0005 66.73 0.0023 44.91 -0.0093 1.000210 05:01Z 7 952 207.05 0.0003 57.00 0.0016 48.95 -0.0220 1.000250 06:42Z 2 955 212.50 -0.0001 51.02 0.0012 65.01 0.0044 1.000120 07:48Z 4 919 -39.36 0.0008 47.77 0.0005 147.70 -0.0234 1.000040 08:55Z 3 924 -45.62 0.0014 45.23 0.0009 142.99 -0.0165 1.000130 09:35Z 1 819 252.51 0.0006 74.59 0.0013 82.87 0.0017 1.000130 10:23Z 6 977 273.34 0.0017 68.38 0.0019 106.22 -0.0100 1.000030 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL5341 Stays: JL5342 ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 02:40Z 9 902 1.00021 -2073 -849 -270 212 66.7 13.4 11 190 - 1.5 02:58Z 9 902 1.00021 -2073 -865 -290 216 64.6 13.5 16 181 - 1.6 05:03Z 7 952 1.00025 -2468 -913 -30 207 56.8 11.1 28 148 - 2.3 06:41Z 2 955 1.00012 -1184 6 -190 212 51.1 10.7 19 175 - 2.1 08:17Z 4 919 1.00004 -394 726 -150 -48 43.7 11.5 17 188 - 2.1 08:54Z 3 924 1.00013 -1283 4 -130 -45 45.3 10.9 23 191 - 2.0 09:35Z 1 819 1.00013 -1283 -68 -130 252 74.7 10.3 24 202 - 2.0 10:22Z 6 977 1.00003 -295 758 -130 274 68.6 10.0 25 203 - 1.7 ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 00:37Z 62 32 23 197 (SSW) 1196 - pcl 01:08Z 59 29 20 217 (SW) 1560 - pcl 01:39Z 57 28 18 213 (SSW) 1695 - pcl 02:10Z 56 30 16 222 (SW) 1845 - pcl 02:40Z 56 31 11 189 (S) 1971 - pcl 03:10Z 56 32 13 192 (SSW) 1830 - pcl 03:40Z 56 33 18 175 (S) 2004 - pcl 04:11Z 54 37 22 145 (SE) 1414 - pcl 04:41Z 52 37 26 141 (SE) 1888 - pcl 05:12Z 52 38 24 145 (SE) 2385 - pcl 05:44Z 51 41 19 182 (S) 2335 - pcl 06:14Z 53 39 22 177 (S) 1573 - pcl 06:44Z 51 41 20 172 (S) 2685 - pcl 07:14Z 51 39 15 164 (SSE) 1822 - pcl 07:44Z 53 35 26 198 (SSW) 1362 - pcl 08:14Z 52 36 17 196 (SSW) 1810 - pcl 08:45Z 52 35 22 184 (S) 1869 - pcl 09:15Z 51 36 16 203 (SSW) 1545 - pcl 09:45Z 50 37 22 212 (SSW) 1368 - clear 10:15Z 50 35 17 213 (SSW) 1386 - pcl 10:45Z 49 36 26 206 (SSW) 1229 - pcl 11:16Z 48 34 17 196 (SSW) 1355 - pcl ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- 01:50 Doors open, fans on 01:55 Enclosure off 11:00 Enclosure on, doors closed, fans off.
