APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Monday November 4, 2002 (MJD 52583) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Swing: Dan Long Night: Mike Harvanek, Pete Newman Visitor: The Ice Man Cometh ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- We were humidity limited again tonight. One plate finished (890) and good data on one other (1069). Minor problems with ice. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- The cloud that enveloped APO all day cleared down the ridge just before sunset, but continued high humidity kept us closed. We determined that the apparent problems with the primary mirror position and (probably) the secondary mirror actuator halt reported in the last few nights were due to observer error: we did not stopthe collimation process before homing the mirrors. Dan homed and relaxed the primary this afternoon and all MIG values were once more within tolerance of the nominal positions (but see the focus oddities on plate 1069 below. . Around 05:45Z, the dew-point depression had risen to 3.1C and seemed to be trending better. We started preparing to open. The first problem we hit was that the lid to the IR sky camera was frozen to the base such that we could not just lift it off. We used a heat gun to melt the ice and all was well. However, on checking the new DIMM cover, we found that it, too, had a nice ring of ice between the lid and the base where condensation had run down and frozen. Given it's location on the northwest corner of the pier, it would not be safe to climb over it to apply a heat gun to the outside edges, so in its current incarnation, we'd have to do without. PR 4391 filed against the DIMM. We delayed opening the 2.5m and PT for some time to be sure the humidity was really staying down, then opened about 06:45Z under clear skies but poor and variable seeing which lowered efficiency. On going up from 6deg after opening, the altitude axis again aborted at ~20 deg. We checked the flat-field petals by eye and on the watcher's system status panel, and all looked normal, with no petals showing as open. As before, two axis inits allowed motion. We noted that the telescope did NOT drift up past 20deg on brake release. The mystery continues. Is it possible that the interlock is tripped when the telescope is actually at 6deg but only actioned at 20deg? Observing sequence: 07:15Z Plate 1069, cartridge 8. Not done in three exposures. Took some time to get focused, probably because the telescope temperature was not equilibrated so soon after opening. The guide stars seemed to be in focus at a relative focus of +300, which is VERY positive (implies a temperature of ~ -23C!). We don't understand what this means (inst=spectro, collimate process is running, what are we missing?). We also took two guider flat-field exposures at the start that seemed to show a large shift in position of the guide fibers. But the exposures seemed normal with good S/N. We ran over the design time limit for this plate before it was done. 09:04Z Plate 890, cartridge 5. Done in 4 exposures. Guide stars after clearing offsets. Focus now at the more sensible value of +50 with FWHM ~ 1.6" but still too variable to switch to imaging. 11:30Z As we were about to switch to the next plate, the humidity soared above closure limits. We did not re-open. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3443 22:40Z 22:53Z 100 O 93.33 96.57 33 ignore ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 22:40 16815 0.0 bias 01:51 16816 0.0 bias ----- sequence 16817, plate 1069 ------- 15.3 10.4 11.3 10.8 NOT DONE 07:46 16817 10.0 flat 07:48 16818 2.0 arc 08:08 16819 900.1 target 08:26 16820 900.1 target 08:45 16821 900.1 target 08:53 16822 240.0 smear 08:56 16823 10.0 flat 08:58 16824 2.0 arc ----- sequence 16825, plate 890 ------- 27.3 15.3 25.8 14.9 DONE 09:27 16825 10.0 flat 09:29 16826 2.0 arc 09:48 16827 900.1 target 10:11 16828 1200.1 target 10:34 16829 1200.1 target 10:58 16830 1200.1 target 11:05 16831 240.0 smear 11:08 16832 10.0 flat 11:11 16833 2.0 arc ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 08:30Z 8 1069 -39.67 0.0019 50.12 0.0008 147.47 -0.0062 1.000200 09:34Z 5 890 98.32 -0.0023 59.56 -0.0031 258.44 -0.0130 1.000330 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL5670 Stays: JL5671 ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 08:30Z 8 1069 1.00020 -1974 -255 200 -40 50.1 -0.1 5 326 BG38 2.5 09:34Z 5 890 1.00033 -3258 -1494 50 98 59.6 0.1 15 298 BG38 2.0 ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 23:12Z 32 32 20 314 (NW) 296 - (IRSC closed) 23:44Z 32 31 17 288 (WNW) 292 - " 00:16Z 31 30 13 306 (NW) 297 - " 00:49Z 30 30 9 319 (NW) 262 - " 01:21Z 31 31 5 11 (N) 10940 - " 01:53Z 30 30 11 356 (NNW) 22096 - " 02:25Z 31 30 19 341 (NNW) 264 - " 02:57Z 31 30 14 354 (NNW) 313 - " 03:30Z 31 30 15 296 (WNW) 288 - " 04:02Z 32 29 20 310 (NW) 293 - " 04:34Z 32 29 18 321 (NW) 335 - " 05:06Z 32 28 20 329 (NNW) 402 - " 05:38Z 33 26 18 314 (NW) 377 - " 06:11Z 33 25 18 308 (NW) 435 - Patchy cloud 06:43Z 33 25 12 286 (WNW) 455 - Clear 07:15Z 32 26 12 295 (WNW) 446 - " 07:47Z 33 25 14 306 (NW) 434 - " 08:18Z 32 26 17 324 (NW) 440 - " 08:49Z 32 26 17 319 (NW) 520 - " 09:20Z 32 26 18 313 (NW) 539 - " 09:50Z 32 24 17 287 (WNW) 428 - " 10:22Z 31 25 18 304 (NW) 483 - " 10:52Z 30 23 20 313 (NW) 408 - " 11:23Z 29 27 18 308 (NW) 383 - " 11:54Z 29 25 14 298 (WNW) 473 - " ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- 06:45Z Enclosure off, fans on 11:30Z Enclosure on, fans off Status at 12:00Z: Telescope stowed at: 30 deg Instrument mounted: Cartridge 7 Counterweights at: 290 Autofill systems: On 180L LN2 dewar weights: Spectro 61 lb Imager 150 lb Interlocks bypassed: Alt slip, az slip.
