APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Thursday December 5, 2002 (MJD 52614) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Mike Harvanek (swing) Atsuko Nitta Scot kleinman ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- DATA! Humidity at the start of the night, then photometric, then clouds. The oblique scan is done. We got a few degrees on 14N before the clouds came in. 3 plates done. Atsuko loves the new hatch and stairs! (I like them, too.:") Imager dewar will need replacing in morning - filled right around 06:00 local time. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Humidity kept us closed at the start of the night, but started to drop around 03:15Z. We opened around 03:30, then waited ~30m for the spectro fill. The cloud camera lid had to be pried open since it was frozen shut. We also had to Scothandle (a poor substitute for Frenchhandling, I know, but in this case, it worked) the manipulator to unstick it in one place where it was also frozen. We started with cart 8, plate 1080. GSOTGTF. While attempting to get focus and offsets for this cart, I realized my logTool focus/offset buttons didn't work, although Atsuko's did. Go figure. (See Problems.) We finished (and smeared) this plate with one additional exposure (and smear) then went on to cart 2 plate, 1068 only not to find GSOTGTF. An fk5 centered in nicely, though. Once the mirror equilibrated, seeing improved, so we decided to switch to imaging. The two high priority stripes were not yet up, so we began with the oblique scan. Run 3511- should be in focus around frame 12. There were a couple of false starts when -autoFocus was not included in the goDrift command. I was going to work on a possible goDrift change to make -autoScale the default, but sdssprd.fnal.gov was either down or not accepting connections. We finished the oblique scans around 08:10 and went on to 29N since 14N wasn't available yet. Focus looked good immediately. Skippy looked good as soon as it ran, although rot offset was 0.01. Around frame 89, lambda~-52, 09:00Z, the cloud camera turned officially non-photometric with a sigma of 11 and clouds in the SW. By frame 104, lambda~-49 clouds had definitely reached our scan area - we kept on - hoping the clouds would soon go away. We gave up hoping around 09:45, took an imager bias and switched back to spectroscopy - cart 3, plate 944. Here again, an fk5 was necessary, but easily found. The first 20m exposure didn't get acceptable signal, so the second was increased to 30m. The signal to noise plot for this plate doesn't look good: the top half is lower than the bottom half, but we didn't see any reason why this might be so during observations. We also discovered tonight that we are running a new version of SoS, v4_9_13. (Well, this was discovered earlier - see past logs - but I explicitly point it out now.) While it's nice to see the bug keeping v4_9_12 from working, addressed, I cannot understand how this version got installed without any shake request or contact with me at all about installing a new version (last I heard there would be no new version EVER). We finished with endNight still running.... ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3508 05:59Z 06:02Z 100 O -126.05 -125.34 19 bias 3509 06:05Z 06:09Z 100 O -124.63 -123.69 20 ignore 3510 06:10Z 06:13Z 100 O -123.29 -122.52 19 ignore 3511 06:15Z 07:10Z 100 O -122.16 -108.24 107 science oblique scan - That is, I click on Offsets and nothing happens. Atsuko clicks on Offsets, and both our logTools (and the murmurLog) see the new information. So, if my logTool was writing to a different murmurLog, it was reading from the right one. Any explanation?
