APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Saturday January 4, 2003 (MJD 52644) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Steph Snedden (swing) Jurek Krzesinski (night) Howard Brewington Connie Rockosi (phone) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Tonight we completed five cartridges, vis., 1077, 1150, 992, 1009, and 971. We also spent some time with cartridge #1134 but discovered that this plate had some problems, e.g, low s/n in red. With cartridges #3 and #6, the telescope's motion was aborted because of slippage in the AZ axis; see the log for details. We also had problems with cartridge #9 during precalib; the flat field did not properly close. See log for details. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Swing shift: Afternoon checkout was thankfully uneventful. Did a spectro Hartmann focus check using goSpecFocus and the IDL task collimate, even though a preCal showed we were in spec. The new actuator positions are: sp1: A=1318 B=1315 C=1315 sp2: A=3510 B=3509 C=3511 A subsequent collimate check showed sp1 back in spec, and sp2 at the uncertainty limit of being in spec. Night Shift: 00:52Z cart#1, plt 1134 mounted. We started with spectro because of moonlight and wind direction (63 / ENE). Stars on slew; seeing= 2.0 First exposure was done in twilight when the sky was a little too bright; yet, no science time was lost. After three additional exposures with good efficiency, r1 and r2 got almost no S/N (below 2), and b1,b2 got barely something over 2 at exposure time of 15 minutes. We extendend exposure to 25 minutes and got similar results. Connie was called, and we decided to unplug the plate unless Connie should decide not to. See the SOS plot for S/N for this plate. 02:53Z cart#2, plt 1077 mounted. Stars on slew; seeing=1.7. Plate done in three exposures. 04:18Z Cart#3, plt 0809 mounted. Telescope aborted in the AZ axis during slew to field. While checking in the lower enclosure, we discovered that the AZ slip detector light was turned off; reset resolved the problem. (5 minutes of science time lost due to the problem). The problem occurred after the gotoField command. Fk5 procedure used to locate guide stars; seeing= 2.1. In three exposures, we obtained more than 50% of the required s/n for this photo-z plate. 06:01Z Cart#4, plt 1150 mounted. Stars found after clearing offsets; seeing=2.3. Seeing continued to deteriorate after the end of the first exposure. 08:29:20Z Az axis aborted during slew to the instChange position, but this time we got also too large to correct error on this axis. We had to reset slip detectors again. We didn't loose more than 1 minute of the science time. 08:41Z Cart#6, plt 0992 mounted. Stars on slew; seeing=3.0. Cartridge completed in three exposures. 10:12Z Cart#8, plt 0971 mounted. Stars on slew; seeing= 2.4. Cartridge completed in the three exposures. 11:38Z Cart#9, plt 1009 mounted. Fk5 used; seeing= 2.3. During precalib, we lost about five nimutes of science because the flat field screen did not close properly. We cycled the FFS open and closed a couple of times, and the problem disappeared. We are not sure which petal went wrong. Cartridge completed in three exposures. endNight rejoiced. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3582 21:40Z 22:01Z 100 O 138.45 143.68 49 ignore ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 17841, plate -9999 ------- 21:27 17841 0.0 bias ----- sequence 17842, plate 1150 ------- 22:20 17842 10.0 flat 22:22 17843 2.0 arc 22:32 17844 2.1 arc 22:34 17845 2.1 arc 22:56 17846 2.1 arc 22:59 17847 2.1 arc ----- sequence 17848, plate -9999 ------- 00:02 17848 0.0 bias 00:11 17849 0.0 bias ----- sequence 17849, plate 1134 ------- 01:04 17850 10.0 flat 01:07 17851 2.0 arc 01:30 17852 900.1 target ----- sequence 17849, plate 1134 ------- 01:48 17853 900.1 target 02:06 17854 900.1 target 02:34 17855 1500.1 target 02:42 17856 240.0 smear ----- sequence 17857, plate 1077 ------- 02:58 17857 10.0 flat 03:00 17858 2.0 arc 03:19 17859 900.1 target 03:37 17860 900.1 target 04:00 17861 1200.1 target 04:08 17862 240.0 smear ----- sequence 17863, plate 809 ------- 04:35 17863 10.0 flat 04:38 17864 2.0 arc 04:56 17865 900.1 target 05:14 17866 900.1 target 05:32 17867 900.1 target 05:40 17868 240.0 smear 05:43 17869 10.0 flat 05:45 17870 2.0 arc ----- sequence 17871, plate 1150 ------- 06:00 17871 10.0 flat 06:03 17872 2.0 arc 06:22 17873 900.1 target 06:50 17874 1500.1 target 07:18 17875 1500.1 target 07:46 17876 1500.1 target 08:14 17877 1500.1 target 08:22 17878 240.0 smear 08:25 17879 10.0 flat 08:27 17880 2.0 arc ----- sequence 17881, plate 992 ------- 08:46 17881 10.0 flat 08:48 17882 2.0 arc 09:19 17883 1500.1 target 09:42 17884 1200.1 target 09:55 17885 600.1 target 10:03 17886 240.0 smear ----- sequence 17887, plate 971 ------- 10:14 17887 10.0 flat 10:17 17888 2.0 arc 10:36 17889 900.1 target 10:54 17890 900.1 target 11:22 17891 1500.1 target 11:30 17892 240.0 smear ----- sequence 17893, plate 1009 ------- 11:52 17893 10.0 flat 11:54 17894 2.0 arc 12:14 17895 900.1 target 12:37 17896 1200.1 target 12:50 17897 600.1 target 12:58 17898 240.0 smear ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 01:15Z 1 1134 -14.99 0.0027 56.31 0.0045 167.38 0.0087 1.000000 03:12Z 2 1077 -34.94 0.0014 51.84 0.0028 151.15 -0.0009 0.999880 05:09Z 3 809 -42.39 0.0028 48.96 0.0054 145.41 -0.0002 1.000020 06:25Z 4 1150 102.94 0.0022 70.62 0.0003 -90.16 -0.0063 0.999910 09:06Z 6 992 16.77 0.0050 61.91 0.0025 194.05 0.0005 1.000110 10:49Z 8 971 139.75 -0.0023 64.29 0.0009 -57.73 -0.0154 1.000140 12:03Z 9 1009 212.12 -0.0030 65.53 0.0052 46.47 -0.0012 1.000140 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL 5883 Stays: JL 5884 ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 01:14Z 1 1134 1.00000 0 1062 -100 -15 56.3 5.0 10 55 gdr 2.0 03:11Z 2 1077 0.99988 1184 2036 -120 -35 51.9 5.0 12 11 1.7 05:08Z 3 809 1.00002 -198 890 -130 -42 49.1 3.4 23 9 2.0 06:24Z 4 1150 0.99991 888 1776 -90 103 70.5 2.7 13 5 2.3 09:05Z 6 992 1.00011 -1085 139 -110 17 61.9 2.3 12 54 3.0 10:49Z 8 971 1.00014 -1381 -132 -130 140 64.2 3.6 12 11 2.4 12:02Z 9 1009 1.00014 -1381 -175 -170 212 65.6 3.5 19 13 2.3 ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 21:15Z 46 13 11 6 (N) 111 -
