APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Sunday January 26, 2003 (MJD 52666) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Day time ------------- Wendell Jordan (in person all day) Pete Newman (in person all day) Howard Brewington (in person part day) Jim Gunn (by phone all day) Connie Rockosi (by phone all day) Night time ------------ Scot Kleinman Mike Harvanek (night) Atsuko Nitta (night) Jim Annis (by phone) Steve Kent (by phone) David Schlegel (by phone) Connie Rockosi (by phone) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Imaging all night long. Do 10S when the moon comes up. ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- o Abell scan: stripe 61N lambda -160 --> 153, 147.6 --> 138.8 is good. o Abell scan was not considered a valid scan according to IOP. Jim Annis rescued us. We have a work around to do the Abell stripe. We filed a PR. o Watcher reported "dacs set (ERROR : 2003-01-27 02:06:50Z)" all night. This is due to the micro being confused from the work during the day and we ignored it. o We got two short spokes and a short rim apacheWheel scan (spoke 120, 135). Both of them stopped earlier than the intended length because the AZ and ROT stopped tracking at DEC 55.7 and Dec 57.8 for no apparent reason. o We got ptvme error when we were trying to goDrift for the rim scan. Even after recovering from the ptvme error, we had daqBusy error. We had to ask Connie to recover. Sorry Connie. o We completed a rim scan connecting the two short spokes in moon. The ptvmeError kept us from finishing the rim scan before the moon rise. o We attempted 10S in moon, but the seeing was too poor (above 2"). ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Jim, Pete, Wendell, Connie worked to find the cause of the b1 problem all day. Wendell has found a cable with bent pins -- a possible cause of the problem. More work will continue tomorrow. Since the spectrographs are not operable, and with good weather, we start out with the imager mounted. Since we did not get the telescope until around 00:00Z, we did not reboot sdsshost. We did not fiducialize the telescope either. We decided to see what the fiducial crossing will be at our first slew. We had rotator correction too large getting ready for the night. But the crossing after it was ok. rotator (correction for rotator 800461 is too large (2003-01-27 01:33:17Z sdssmcp): 2003-01-27 01:33:32Z ) 01:45Z Abell scan was the beginning of the night scan. Unfortunately, calcStripParams nor scanStripe recognized strip 61, 62 as valid scans. We called SKent and but was not home. We then tried Jim Annis. While Jim works on the fix, we take a bias on the telescope. 02:06Z We got "ln2_emty" critical error from watcher. Mike went down to the telescope but found nothing wrong. imstat did not report any fillfault either. We did a "cc startfillseq" just in case. We then saw the imager dewar weight go down, indicating a fill, and the error did not come back. 02:10Z Jim Annis gave us a tcl code to source so that we can do Abell scan. Run 3610 61 N Abell scan Frame 16 lam=-160: SoKent is good. skippy confirmed that our pointing and rotator position is good. Frame 65 lam=-153 :SoKent says the seeing has become bad. Wind is shifting. Frame 99 lam=-147.6: seeing is back to being good. Frame 154 --end:Are we seeing a nebula???? Frame 158 lam=-138.8: endDrift. Here is the work around to do Abell scan (this is also in the Science Plan www page): Before you observe the Abell 426 stripes (i.e., before you do a calcStripeParams or a scanStripe), you must do the following in iop: source /usrdevel/annis/iop/etc/a426.tcl If you forget to do this, calcStripeParams and scanStripe will not recognize stripes 61 and 62 and you will get something like this: im> calcStripeParams 61 N -startLambda -163 calcStripeParams: invalid stripe: no such stripenumber 61 in chn Error: invalid stripe number, no calculations made im> scanStripe 61 N -163 calcStripeParams: invalid stripe: no such stripenumber 61 in chn Error: invalid stripe number, no calculations made If sourcing the above patch does not work, try this in iop: set env(ASTROTOOLS_DIR) /usrdevel/annis/iop loadStripeLimits stripeLimits 61 (or stripeLimits 62, depending on the stripe)) If this still doesn't work, call Jim Annis. AFTER YOU FINISH OBSERVING STRIPE 61 (OR 62) YOU MUST EXIT THE IOP SESSION FROM WHICH YOU ISSUED THE ABOVE COMMANDS AND START A NEW IOP SESSION BEFORE OBSERVING ANY STANDARD SURVEY STRIPES. Off to the next high priority science stripe. 03:57Z We go to 28N to finish off the remaining 2hr scan of this stripe. Run 3611 28N THe goDrift hung eventually giiving a message telling us to consider the scan messed up. ptvmeTests did not indicate anything wrong. But we issued ptvmeReset anyway. Issuing control-C in the iop window that hung "worked" and started the drift. We ended the drift and issued another scanStripe to make sure we were pointing at the right place. Run 3612 28N Frame 14 :in focus. skippy is good. The seeing is not good --- we decide to try a different stripe. Stripe 15N will have better ALT as well as point away from the wind. Run 3613 15N Frame 10 lam=-68 :Seeing, focus, skippy are all good from the beginning. The wind is now moving easterly. The seeing started out good, but then changed to bad shortly. We will try a scan further west from this one. Run 3514 27S Frame 10 lam=-66.1 seeing, skippy, focus all good. The seeing changed to marginal and then bad later. While we watched the seeing, we read apacheWheeel document. We had several questions and called David Schlegel for help. Right after we hung up, the seeing improved. We decided to restart 28N from the start. Run 3515 28N Frame 16 lam=-32: skippy says all is well. Seeing and focus is good from the start. Frame 39 lam=-28.7: seeing goes bad. The seeing went to acceptable for a while but then back to bad. We gave up at Frame 105. Now we go for ApacheWheel. Run 3516 binned bias Nothing complained or failed. Since we wanted to get to sky ASAP, we stopped once we knew that we could take bias without any error messages. We will take a binned bias for reduction after the moon rise. 07:17Z We got vs- error message on CCD51 from watcher. The voltage is -1.51 for this CCD. Others -4 to -5. I understand that this is the way it is suppose to be on binned scan. Watcher cries about no gangs which we are suppose to ignore. Run 3517 short spoke 120. WE forgot to issue noAutoScale when we did goDrift. So we stopped the run and restarted goDrift. One must issue the following to reset the scrolling display for apacheWheel. setSCDDisplayFromFlavor old Run 3518 short spoke 120. The stars look round. All seems well. We got the following message in watcher regarding the camera shutter: bottom astro (NOT_OPEN : 2003-01-27 08:09:10Z) We ignored this since apacheeWheel do not use astrometric data. 08:18Z 3.5m reports that the seeing has improved. 08:19Z The scrolling displayed showed all the stars in streaks. The telescope stopped tracking in AZ and ROT. This is at DEC 57.8 (RA120). MCP menu shows all axis happy, interlock display shows everything green. What happened? We did an axis init and then we slewed another short spoke. Watcher reported axis halted by problem for rot and alt and no rot and az at 08:18:57Z. We have no idea why. The slew to the next spoke works fine. Run 3519 spoke 135 This scan also halted almost at the same place! Dec 55.7 (RA135) ,AZ and ROT halted. What is going on? There is no interlock tripped, and MCP says everything is happy! We checked visually if there was anything around the telescope that can be halting the telescope, but we found nothing. We did not even have to issu an axis init to move the telescope after it has halted. We found the following message in TCC. Does this mean something to anyone? 0 0 W Text="tracking failed on one ore more axes"; AxisNoTrack="TFT"; AxisErr="MinPos","OK","CannotComput e" 0 0 I TCCStatus="HTH","NNN"; TCCPos=NaN,62.22,NaN; AxePos=-149.72,62.21,-132.80 Instead of redoing the spoke, we decide to go and do the rim scan to connect the two short short spokes since we do not have enough time left before moon rise to redo or finish the spokes and do the rim.We slewed to the rim without a problem. We issued goDrift and then was kicked out of iop due to ptvme error after answering questoins but before the scan actually started. Sigh. We only have 15 min before the moon rise at this point. ptvmeTest reported nothing wrong. We issued ptvmeReset and restarted iop. We were not sure if the data will still be binned when kicked out this way. So we tried to issue "init4Bin 4 4". We got error about the camera being busy, so we tried endDrift. This did not work. We did not know what to do and woke Connie up. Sorry Sorry Sorry Connie. Connie told us to, iccExec [vmeList] readoutAbort followed by iccExec [vmeList] statusGet daqBusy to check that all is well. We then restarted the rim scan. By this time, the moon was up, but we decided to take the rim scan anyway. Run 3621 rim scan 115 --> 140. This is to connect spoke 120 and 135. Run 3622 binned bias It takes a long time to get 30 frames of binned bias. We wanted to get back to sky as soon as possible since Steve has given us stripe 10 to do in the moon. Run 3623 normal bias All seems back to normal again. vs- for ccd51 is back to normal also. scanStripe to the new stripe took several minutes after the telescope finished slewing until the prompt came back. We don't know why this is. Run 3624 10 S -- this is the stripe Steve told us to do in moony photometric condition. Frame 14 skippy says all is well. Frame 19 lam=-22.9 We are in focus. But the seeing is above 2". We stopped the run at Frame 78 because the seeing was bad for the whole run and is not showing any sign of improvement. Run 3625 bias --- The bias run definitely looks like autoScale is working. We were not quite sure during the Run 3624. Maybe the poor seeing combined with the moon fooled us into thinking that the autoScale was not quite doing its job. 11:45Z We decided to close --- the seeing is too poor for imaging. endNight ran successfully. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- 3608 00:34Z 01:02Z 100 O -156.37 -149.41 60 ignore 3609 01:59Z 02:22Z 100 O -134.93 -111.80 50 bias 3610 02:24Z 03:55Z 61 N -161.37 -138.56 166 science Abell scan 61N 3611 04:06Z 04:07Z 28 N -31.91 -31.62 16 ignore 3612 04:09Z 04:26Z 28 N -33.44 -29.27 42 ignore 3613 04:29Z 05:03Z 15 N -68.44 -60.06 70 ignore 3614 05:07Z 05:54Z 27 S -66.48 -54.63 93 ignore 3615 06:02Z 07:02Z 28 N -33.42 -18.32 113 science 28N 3616 07:07Z 07:14Z 100 O -57.76 -56.01 19 bias short binned bias 3617 07:26Z 07:29Z 100 O -53.19 -52.35 17 ignore 3618 07:30Z 08:21Z 100 O -51.95 -39.37 48 calibration spoke 120 3619 08:26Z 09:16Z 100 O -38.08 -25.42 49 calibration spoke 135 3620 09:22Z 09:35Z 100 O -23.88 -20.60 8 ignore 3620 09:22Z 09:35Z 100 O -23.88 -20.60 8 ignore 3620 09:22Z 09:39Z 100 O -23.88 -19.83 8 ignore 3621 09:46Z 10:03Z 100 O -18.02 -13.77 26 calibration rim 3622 10:05Z 10:25Z 100 O -13.26 -8.28 28 bias 3623 10:31Z 10:37Z 100 O -6.63 -5.14 23 ignore 3624 10:47Z 11:30Z 10 S -24.52 -13.76 86 ignore 3625 11:32Z 11:38Z 100 O 8.66 10.02 22 ignore ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3610 29 4 121 -3.900 0.102 2.100 0.110 -0.00429 319 68 3610 81 4 112 -4.300 0.217 0.700 0.326 -0.00133 312 71 3610 137 4 114 -3.500 0.119 -0.800 0.147 0.00118 297 74 3612 14 4 59 -2.800 0.182 -2.000 0.161 -0.00033 68 42 3613 16 4 141 -2.000 0.504 -3.200 0.307 -0.00284 130 51 3614 23 4 149 -1.900 0.167 -4.400 0.134 0.00263 135 69 3614 74 4 134 -0.900 0.188 -2.900 0.154 0.00548 128 73 3615 16 4 58 -0.600 0.161 -1.300 0.156 -0.00280 72 64 3615 68 4 51 0.400 0.157 -0.500 0.138 -0.00484 65 63 3624 14 4 60 -4.100 0.203 -3.800 0.152 -0.00638 216 51 3624 66 4 53 -3.400 0.182 -4.300 0.148 -0.00576 216 51 ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ 3610 29 1 69 221 70 0.302 0.299 0.256 0.196 -0.00086 3610 29 1 69 221 73 0.327 0.230 0.366 0.139 -0.00123 3610 29 1 69 221 78 0.426 0.222 0.245 0.235 -0.00082 3610 29 1 69 221 79 0.476 0.154 0.247 0.179 -0.00083 3610 29 1 69 221 75 0.451 0.137 0.364 0.184 -0.00122 3610 29 1 69 221 81 0.403 0.217 0.354 0.297 -0.00119 3610 29 1 69 221 73 0.395 0.202 0.441 0.350 -0.00148 3610 29 1 69 221 75 0.550 0.146 0.490 0.321 -0.00165 3610 29 1 69 221 77 0.575 0.224 0.594 0.176 -0.00200 3610 29 1 69 221 62 0.675 0.247 0.586 0.203 -0.00197 3610 40 1 69 222 68 0.104 0.124 1.084 0.249 -0.00365 3610 40 1 69 222 70 0.053 0.133 1.118 0.222 -0.00376 3610 40 1 69 222 72 0.214 0.141 0.952 0.187 -0.00320 3610 40 1 69 222 76 0.204 0.129 0.944 0.185 -0.00317 3610 40 1 69 222 85 0.175 0.145 0.830 0.184 -0.00279 3610 56 1 70 225 72 0.705 0.193 -0.423 0.165 0.00142 3610 56 1 70 225 78 0.716 0.185 -0.433 0.141 0.00146 3610 56 1 70 225 75 0.776 0.182 -0.402 0.229 0.00135 3610 56 1 70 225 77 0.739 0.145 -0.403 0.235 0.00136 3610 56 1 70 225 79 0.746 0.155 -0.472 0.159 0.00159 3610 91 1 72 231 72 0.670 0.169 -0.352 0.253 0.00119 3610 91 1 72 231 72 0.726 0.174 -0.287 0.285 0.00097 3610 91 1 72 231 74 0.832 0.186 -0.160 0.315 0.00054 3610 91 1 72 231 67 0.835 0.243 -0.225 0.411 0.00076 3610 91 1 72 231 55 0.701 0.164 -0.266 0.433 0.00090 3610 111 1 73 236 66 0.860 0.189 -1.477 0.237 0.00496 3610 111 1 73 236 76 0.921 0.160 -1.396 0.204 0.00470 3610 111 1 73 236 74 1.002 0.197 -1.426 0.306 0.00479 3610 111 1 73 236 68 1.081 0.141 -1.429 0.199 0.00481 3610 111 1 73 236 68 1.046 0.165 -1.354 0.261 0.00455 3610 146 1 74 247 46 -0.555 0.212 -1.611 0.143 0.00541 3610 146 1 74 247 67 -0.540 0.147 -1.404 0.185 0.00472 3610 146 1 74 247 26 -0.417 0.200 -1.544 0.224 0.00519 3610 146 1 74 247 23 -0.475 0.230 -1.474 0.212 0.00496 3610 146 1 74 247 36 -0.272 0.166 -1.487 0.174 0.00500 ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- 00:54 18807 0.0 bias 00:57 18808 0.0 bias ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- FNAL: JL5922 JL5923 JL5924 JL5925 JL5926 JL5927 JL5928 APO: JL5929-5935 ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- 01:00Z 33 17 4 3 (N) 181 -
