APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Sunday February 23, 2003 (MJD 52694) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- swing: Howard Brewington night: Mike Harvanek Stephanie Snedden Peregrine McGehee (by phone) Commando Cody, Ted, Joan, Graber, Krog and Retik ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- We opened briefly but were not able to get any data due to heavy clouds. We did obtain about 40 minutes of tracking data to help Peregrine debug the false tracking alarms being thrown by the TPM before closing. Clouds kept us closed for the remainder of the night. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- During afternoon checkout, the alt brake came on at around 44 degrees when we were slewing the telescope up to 90. Howard said that this was not the first time he has seen this. There was also a windscreen touch reported by the watcher at about the same time: altitude (Windscreen touched in altitude: DOWN (2003-02-23 23:59:13Z sdssmcp): 2003-02-23 23:59:16Z) Perhaps these two items are related. The telescope balance was checked (twice) and was found to be ok. It was also noticed that the MCP being run at the telescope had a PLC mismatch. Not sure if this could cause the problem but the MCP was restarted from a test version of iop. Also during checkout, the grade 2 (orange) bottle of N2 was found to be empty. Howard swapped out the empty bottle for a full one. We are using a new version of TPM (2_27_0) after Peregrine noticed some problems with the tracking alarms after we got on the sky (briefly) last night. This version of tpm seems to be sending false dewar alarms: dewar (MAJOR: 2003-02-23 23:56:11Z) dewar (MAJOR: 2003-02-24 01:27:28Z) dewar (MAJOR: 2003-02-24 01:50:28Z) dewar (MAJOR: 2003-02-24 03:02:39Z) dewar (MAJOR: 2003-02-24 03:28:01Z) dewar (MAJOR: 2003-02-24 08:37:12Z) dewar (MAJOR: 2003-02-24 10:23:57Z) Chain saw smoke from the tree thinning project prevented us from ventilating until 0100Z. When beginning her SOP session today, Steph issued a gGuide off command as per last night's problems. Several hours later, when she issued her first gotoField -gFlat from the same SOP session, she got the error that we were getting last night, indicating that gGuide had somehow been reset to "on". She reissued the gGuide off command and things appeared to work normally. Plate 1210 (cartridge 3): Although it was mostly cloudy, we made an attempt at science. If we could not obtain data we would at least get some tracking data to help Peregrine debug the false tracking alarms from the TPM. An FK5 star was needed to acquire guide stars but this was at least partially due to the clouds. One minute guider integrations barely showed the guide stars and so no useful science data could be gathered. We called Peregrine so that he could monitor the TPM alarms at this time. He requested that we continue to guide with one minute integrations for the purpose of obtaining engineering data to test the TPM. The one minute guider integrations began at approximately 0220Z and ended at 0301Z. Peregrine also commented on the false dewar alarms, suggesting that the problem was with serial communication and appeared to be triggered by activity in the enclosure, possibly by fills or by jiggling the dewar (turning it off/on, bumping it, etc.). During this testing, the watcher showed several of the following errors: rotator (addoffset: Max accl. for rotator exceeded: -307/1000 (2003-02-24 02:44:14Z sdssmcp): 2003-02-24 02:44:29Z) This may have been due to the fact that because of heavy clouds, we were attempting to guide on cosmic rays rather than stars. After collecting about 40 minutes of tracking data, we put the enclosure back on due to heavy clouds. During the telescope stow, we got another windscreen touch: altitude (Windscreen touched in altitude: UP (2003-02-24 03:06:06Z sdssmcp): 2003-02-24 03:06:17Z) We never reopened.
