Science tonight. ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- With the shake items completed we attempted science. The weather had other ideas. Boughts of dust and humidity and stubborn orographic clouds limited us to a couple guider exposures on two cartridges. No science frames. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Swing shift: The engineering crew reported that the cartridge lift (i.e. where the cartridges are stored) is not functioning from the controls inside the building, but is working from the controls outside the building. On logging in this afternoon, I found an email stating that the servers had failed to start at 05:18 MDT. Startng an IOP session revealed a DA communications error, which ptvmeReset fixed. See problem section #1 for details. Spectrographs' focus checked and adjusted. See notes at end of log for details. The altitude 45deg fiducial continue to not be read when slewing up. Night shift: Opening delayed due to clouds and storms moving toward us from the east. 03:30Z OK, storms no longer an imminent threat and there is enough clearing to open. Sucker hole anyone? MiG communication fault on M2 seen sporadically over the last few nights in the TPM category of the watcher. The TPM display shows M2 MiG values as black and changing when they should. Is this a real error? m2 mig (Communications Fault: 2003-08-23 03:25:47Z) Cartridge 2 1416 No guide stars on slew (or was it a cloud?). Found FK5 clouds hamper set up. There was only about half an hour of observable time left on this cartridge which got used up waiting on clouds. Decided to switch to cartridge 1. Cartridge 1 1028 No guide stars on slew (probably due to clouds). Found FK5. That's as far as we got before having to close. 04:20Z Had to close due to dust. Humidity followed a short time later. Doors closed, fans off. 05:00Z Clouds roll in as dust level drops. Humidity remains marginal. 06:50Z Doors open, fans on Cartridge 8 put on the telescope in anticipation of opening. More clouds... 10:15Z Gave up on the night.
