APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Wednesday August 27, 2003 (MJD 52879) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Swing: Pete Newman Night: Dan Long, Steph Snedden Support: French Leger ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science. ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Weather. One attempt at opening, but no useful science photons. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Swing shift: ------------ Overcast with light rain and lightning within 8 miles during the afternoon. During afternoon checks, Pete accidentally issued a goStare instead of a goDrift to the imager. Rather than mess around trying to see if we were in a mess, we unmounted the tapes and rebooted the crates, then started again (knowing from prior experience the DA is in a mess) with poolInit and tapeRelabel and an iack to make sure the imager was happy (and it was). Spectro focus was checked. At Tamb = 13.7C, b1, b2 and r2 were technically slightly out of focus, but with means offsets all <= 0.2 pixels, not adjustments were made. The rotator and altitude both showed "too large to correct" errors (altitude 8263, rotator 1506) and required forcing corrections. The altitude drive was covered with moth parts again, and was cleaned. The telescope had been moved around quite a bit this afternoon, so we were not surprised or concerned about the errors. Night shift: ------------ We delayed opening because of clouds and a suspicious radar return. 02:30Z - We start to open. The instrument lift failed to work, but was quickly made operational (see problems section). We were open by 03:00Z, just in time for the clouds to thicken. We sat and waited. 03:15Z - The clouds became threatening again. We closed. We played with the MCP interlock logic for the instrument lift, per Robert's request. One item we would like is an explanatory list of the instrument change interlock words. Some are obvious, but not all. For example, what is "lh_les_6d0_1"? We guess that "lh" is lift height, but the rest? A one page explanation that includes references to the various interlock sensors would be nice to have. Also, it should be noted that we appreciate the fact that the lava lamp is included as a source of problems with the instrument lift 05:42Z - Dewpoint depression below 3.0 C 08:05Z - Dewpoint depression 4.0 C. We went to mount a cartridge and test the MCP Interlock display some more, then open if the dewpoint depression stayed good. It did, BUT the building was wet to the touch. The winds were calm, and we believe the local dewpoint depression at the level of the telescope was lower. We did not open. We did more MCP instrument lift interlocks tests and discovered a hardware problem that must be resolved before they can be tested further. When the handpaddle is connected to the box on the north fork (at stow), and the trigger is pressed, the displayed height drops by about 0.45 inches. This means there is a height and force limit incompatibility for latching a cartridge. If the height as registered by the handpaddle (with the trigger out) is below the upper limit, the force will be below it's lower limit and you cannot latch the cartridge. You cannot raise the cartridge so that you exceed the lower height limit with the trigger in. Did you get all that? Apparently, pressing the handpaddle trigger loads the height display down. This does NOT happen when the handpaddle is connected to the south fork box. A PR was filed. 09:59Z - Building even more wet to the touch. 10:38Z - We give up and run endNight -didntDoDiddly ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4082 23:32Z 23:35Z 100 O 38.15 38.84 19 ignore doghouse, not archived 4083 ------ ------ --- - ----- ----- -- ignore (goStare, not goDrift) 4084 23:58Z 00:22Z 100 O 44.52 50.48 38 ignore doghouse ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n):N/A QA Procedures Done (y/n):N/A UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 22118, plate -9999 ------- 23:44 22118 0.0 bias ----- sequence 22119, plate 1104 ------- 23:58 22119 2.1 arc 00:01 22120 2.1 arc ----- sequence 22121, plate -9999 ------- 01:14 22121 0.0 bias 01:18 22122 0.0 bias ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL Stays: JL ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 23:19Z 58 51 4 92 (E) 451 - 23:52Z 59 49 2 116 (ESE) 411 - 00:24Z 61 49 2 203 (SSW) 478 - 01:17Z 59 49 0 44 (NE) 471 - 01:49Z 59 48 1 317 (NW) 437 - 02:21Z 59 48 1 270 (W) 441 - 02:53Z 57 49 4 190 (S) 401 - 03:25Z 58 48 6 195 (SSW) 373 - 03:58Z 59 47 3 240 (WSW) 413 - 04:30Z 59 47 5 237 (WSW) 511 - 05:02Z 59 47 7 261 (W) 687 - 05:34Z 55 49 11 184 (S) 661 - 06:07Z 55 50 6 179 (S) 795 - 06:39Z 55 49 6 183 (S) 701 - 07:11Z 56 49 5 235 (SW) 774 - 07:43Z 57 49 4 250 (WSW) 708 - 08:16Z 57 49 2 267 (W) 690 - 08:48Z 57 49 1 226 (SW) 753 - 09:20Z 57 49 4 260 (W) 895 - 09:52Z 56 49 2 270 (W) 791 - 10:25Z 57 49 5 277 (W) 900 - 10:56Z 57 48 2 271 (W) 786 - ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- 02:30Z - Blower & cone fans on, doors opened. 03:00Z - Enclosure opened. 03:20Z - Enclosure closed. The power was on, but the pump did not engage. We power-cycled the instrument lift control box, and then the pump started. French was consulted. He thinks it is a relay to the pump, and will check the relays tomorrow. A PR was filed.
