APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Thursday August 28, 2003 (MJD 52880) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Swing: Pete Enwman Night: Steph Nsedden, Dan Olng ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science. ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Another frustrating night battling the weather. We were open for about three hours tonight and in that time managed to get two usable science exposures on plate 1415. The rest of the time we were closed due to clouds and/or nearby storms. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Wsing: ------ Spectrographs' focuses were checked (Tamb=15.1C) and all were in focus. The first check was with all the enclosure lights turned off. As an experiment, a second goSpecFocus was run with all the lights turned on. If made a difference: both goSpecFocus and collimate reported the blue cameras to be out of focus when the enclosure lights were turned on, and reported everything to be in focus when they were turned off. Moral: if the blue cameras appear out of focus, check the enclosure is dark. We suspect (but did not test) that it is the high-power halogen lamps that made the difference. Inght: ------ 00:20Z Enclosure opened, fans on Several storms around during the afternoon, but no rain on site. The thunderstorms threw up a lot of high cloud which is still covering us at sunset. Dewpoint ranging between 10 - 11 C. It is not often that we see dewpoints above 10 C here at 9000 feet. PT dewpoint sensor back to reading ~ 0C dewpoint. Obviously wrong. 03:15Z Opening 03:40Z Cartridge 2 1415 Cloud necessitate FK5. Pause as thicker patch goes over where we are pointed. 04:02Z Clouds clear enough to get set up 04:52Z instChange 04:58Z gotoField Cartridge 1 1028 Clouds rolled in during cartridge change postponing acquisition. 05:32Z Saw the FK5 long enough to set up on it and return to the field. Pretty fuzzy looking guide stars. Focus tweak gives 1.8" fwhm. First and only science exposure failed due to lack of signal. 06:15Z Closed due to thickening clouds and storms approaching from the east. 07:30Z Bouts of cloud and uncomfortably close radar echoes keep us closed. 10:30Z Still cloudy. Giving up. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4085 22:56Z 23:15Z 100 O 30.10 34.75 42 ignore ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n):y QA Procedures Done (y/n):y b1-L: 1268 b1-R: 1028 leftmost fiber cut off at lower left. b2-L: 1223 b2-R: 1200 no fibers run off edge r1-L: 1173 r1-R: 1225 leftmost fiber cut off at lower left. r2-L: 542 r2-R: 1490 rightmost 2 fibers cutoff at upper right UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 22123, plate -9999 ------- 22:58 22123 0.0 bias ----- sequence 22124, plate 1123 ------- 23:15 22124 2.1 arc Focus checks. 23:17 22125 2.1 arc 23:27 22126 2.1 arc 23:30 22127 2.1 arc 23:41 22128 2.1 arc 23:43 22129 2.1 arc ----- sequence 22130, plate -9999 ------- 00:53 22130 0.0 bias ----- sequence 22131, plate 1415 ------- 11.0 10.0 11.4 10.4 04:03 22131 10.0 flat 04:06 22132 2.0 arc 04:30 22133 1200.1 target 04:50 22134 900.1 target ----- sequence 22135, plate 1028 ------- - - - - 05:42 22135 10.0 flat 05:44 22136 2.0 arc 06:12 22137 900.1 target ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 04:09Z cart 2 -83.12 0.0031 53.61 0.0007 115.64 0.0076 1.000350 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- EndNight rejoiced at archiving our two hard-fought science exposures.
