APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Monday September 1, 2003 (MJD 52884) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Swing: Pete Newman Night: Jurek Krzesinski, Atsuko Nitta Gourmet eaters ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science. ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Two plates done (1028, 678) and got one good science exposure on another plate (1497). We almost did AW, but the clouds came back and we had to switch back to spectro. Gourmet night: Poultry was the theme of tonight's dinner. Two home made bread Turkey and wild and not-wild rice Chicken Mexican spicy dish Chicken and rice Indian dish Roasted chicken Lentil curry Cheese cake Peach cake Coffee (2/3 Bali 1/3 Kona pea blend) ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Swing shift: During preflight checks, an error was noted from the watcher. See problem section 1 for details. The spectrographs' focus were checked (Tamb=13.0C) and sp1 in particular was significantly different to the last check (MJD 52882). They were adjusted by moving the mirrors only. Is that another symptom of the last rotator position observed? The rotator was at 0 deg when the measurements and adjustments were made. See last section of this log for details of the adjustments. I noticed two Allen screws on the outside cartridge manipulator were loose and tightened them. The are on the lower end of the upper stainless-steel vertical slider, just above the main hinge for the arm. I checked other visible screws and no more were loose. I also noticed a pool of water in the adjustment ring for the sp2 red camera, apparently drips from its dewar. This was when the telescope was at stow. I don't think having water sitting there is good, so I opened PR5622. I taped some kleenwipe paper over the threads to wick further water away (and to flag where the problem is), but a more permanent solution is needed, or at least a check that the water does no harm. Night: 01:20Z Opened. We saw four birds inside the enclosure as we opened. They seem to like the enclosure. They seem to be watching for moths that come inside the enclosure and then fly down to catch them. Cartridge 2 Plate 1415 Guide stars on gotoField. The plateID in the header of the preCalib files and bias taken right before the preCalib (taken AFTER loadCart) came up as plateID=0. The header showss correct NAME, MAP ID, PLUGMAP info, but for some reason the plateID was set to 0. 5min into the first science exposure, clouds moved in and we paused the exposure. The clouds did not go away and we read out the exposure after pausing for 15min or so. The exposure was not useful. We wait for the clouds to move away. We did not bother to change the header plateID because as we got no useful data on this plate tonight. 04:50Z We put cartridge 1 plate 1098. When we went to the field, we got AZ too large to correct error. After forcing fiducial, we got stars on gotoField. We finished this plate with one 30 min exposure. Humidity is slowly rising. We keep close eyes on the dew point depression. SOS says smear on b1 did not make the required S/N. 06:00Z Cartridge 4 Plate 678 We had to fk5. We finished this plate in four exposures, but the smear on sp1 did not get enough S/N according to SoS. During this plate, the sky became photometric although the seeing was ~2.5". We decide to put on the imager to do ApacheWheel. 08:00Z instChange to imager. Telescope aborted on the way to instChange position. It looks like it was caused from the windscreen touches in AZ and ALT. There were many**1000 moths on the telescope and the corrector lens. We used the air hose and the vacuum cleaner to get them off the telescope before mounting the imager. There were three dead mice inside the doghouse with the imager which Jurek took care of. Doing instChange is definitely more scary for Atsuko than any haunted house. Run 4090 82,0 This run is to focus and check rotator alignment before doing Apache Wheel. We had problem getting skippy to run. We first had the spectro offsets left in so we got rid of it, but that did not help. Yes, we were running skippy from iop and not from astrom. We were in the survey area, but moved the telescope to another position to see that will help. And it did. So our previous skippy must have failed because we were too close to the edge of the survey area or something. Both the rotator and the nuErr are within tolerance(THETAF = 0.0030 degrees, nuErr 1.8"). Run 4091 Binned bias. We stopped at frame 32. We got "no gangs" messages and vs- error for ccd 51 (it was at -1.72 Volts) while running binned bias. Run 4092 -- ignore. As we were tracking to our first spoke (spoke 15) the AZ got too large to correct error. So we had to cross a fiducial and apply corrections before continuing. Run 4093 Spoke 15 Frame 18 is the beginning of the good data. Well guess what. It is no longer photometric! So we end the drift..... We were so busy trying to get the AW going that we did not notice that the cloud camera image stopped reloading. It looks like the sky became non-photometric in less than an hour after we swapped instruments. We have wasted an hour trying to get AW going while the sky was non-photometric. 10:00Z We bring the imager back into normal mode, take a bias and switch back to spectro. 10:20Z Cartridge 6 Plate 1497 We had to fk5 to acquire the field. The guide stars went behind the clouds while taking preCalib but we were see the guide stars again and start science after waiting for about 10 min. 11:00Z Fire alarm goes off. According to the alarm panel, the new dorm is on fire. We checked but there was no smoke coming from any of the rooms. Bill K. tried to reset the alarm panel, but the alarm will come back on even after resetting. So we leave the alarm disabled. Probably a moth caused this false alarm which is the second time in 3 days. We got one good science exposure and another one that did not make it to s/n^2>=2 on this plate before we had to close due to the twilight/sun. endNight rejoiced. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4089 21:09Z 21:47Z 100 O 7.23 16.78 77 ignore 4090 08:26Z 09:11Z 82 N -169.26 -147.16 89 ignore 4091 09:15Z 09:20Z 100 O -170.80 -169.50 40 bias 4092 09:30Z 09:32Z 100 O -167.14 -166.60 25 ignore 4093 09:37Z 09:50Z 100 O -165.29 -162.15 77 ignore 4094 09:56Z 09:59Z 100 O -160.65 -159.77 20 ignore ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4090 67 2 17 -5.500 0.108 1.800 0.141 -0.00302 140 50 ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n):y QA Procedures Done (y/n):y UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 22178, plate 1415 ------- 21:09 22178 0.0 bias 21:12 22179 2.1 arc 21:15 22180 2.1 arc 21:49 22181 2.1 arc 21:52 22182 2.1 arc ----- sequence 22184, plate 1415 ------- 01:57 22184 0.0 bias 02:22 22185 10.0 flat 02:24 22186 2.0 arc 02:52 22187 417.0 target ----- sequence 22188, plate 1028 ------- 9.4 5.9 10.2 7.1 05:09 22188 10.0 flat 05:11 22189 2.0 arc 05:46 22190 1800.1 target 05:53 22191 240.0 smear ----- sequence 22192, plate 678 ------- 19.8 14.3 21.3 18.4 06:13 22192 10.0 flat 06:15 22193 2.0 arc 06:37 22194 900.1 target 07:01 22195 1200.1 target 07:25 22196 1200.1 target 07:48 22197 1200.1 target 07:55 22198 240.0 smear 07:58 22199 10.0 flat 08:01 22200 2.0 arc ----- sequence 22201, plate 1497 ------- 7.6 7.0 8.0 4.6 10:21 22201 10.0 flat 10:24 22202 2.0 arc 10:55 22203 1366.6 target 11:32 22204 1200.1 target 11:40 22205 10.0 flat 11:42 22206 2.0 arc ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 05:23Z 1 1028 11.76 0.0072 56.76 0.0001 189.81 0.0286 0.999990 06:23Z 4 678 27.93 0.0026 53.88 -0.0015 203.11 -0.0035 1.000190 10:45Z 6 1497 -36.78 0.0061 51.25 0.0011 149.70 -0.0031 1.000000 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL6678 Stays: JL6677 ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 05:23Z 1 1028 0.99999 99 993 -250 12 56.8 10.9 15 68 gdr 2.4 06:23Z 4 678 1.00019 -1875 -534 -150 28 53.9 10.6 14 76 gdr 1.7 10:45Z 6 1497 1.00000 0 927 -250 -37 51.2 12.3 10 43 gdr 1.7 ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 20:48Z 63 50 5 201 (SSW) 194 - 21:18Z 59 48 5 266 (W) 176 - 21:53Z 61 49 5 203 (SSW) 219 - 22:23Z 59 47 9 214 (SW) 178 - 22:55Z 58 47 1 258 (WSW) 194 - 02:07Z 55 44 5 102 (ESE) 275 - 02:37Z 54 44 5 88 (E) 260 - 03:07Z 53 44 9 90 (E) 298 - 03:37Z 53 44 12 80 (E) 287 - 04:08Z 53 44 12 82 (E) 284 - 04:40Z 52 44 14 75 (ENE) 304 - 05:12Z 51 44 15 66 (ENE) 310 - 05:44Z 51 44 12 79 (E) 327 - 06:16Z 51 43 15 69 (ENE) 347 - 06:49Z 51 43 14 67 (ENE) 288 - 07:21Z 51 44 15 64 (ENE) 294 - 07:53Z 51 44 11 54 (NE) 329 - 08:25Z 50 43 7 338 (NNW) 256 - 08:57Z 52 43 9 5 (N) 262 - 09:30Z 50 42 6 11 (N) 250 - 10:02Z 53 42 7 8 (N) 240 - 10:32Z 53 41 8 35 (NE) 250 - 11:03Z 54 42 9 27 (NNE) 250 - 11:33Z 53 42 7 7 (N) 227 - ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- 22:50Z Fans on. 01:20Z Opened. 11:45Z Fans off, enclosure on.
