APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Wednesday November 26, 2003 (MJD 52970) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Day: Atsuko Kleinman Night: Steph Snedden Scot Kleinman Guest: R. French Leger ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Finished two plates- data on four. Closed 2nd half of night due to high winds. It's cold! (-8c with 45 mph winds). ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon ----------- While trying to do "grabInst" with the spectros, SOP complained that it could not talk to the camera. But then the message looks like it grabbed the cameras after all.... At any rate, I thought I'd drop and regrab to make sure all is well. The Imager dewar scale however stopped reading correctly. He says that the scale inside the enclosure is reading the weight as 130lb. The TPM is reading 194lb in read (meaning there is something wrong with the reading). The actual dewar weight should be something between 200 to 300lb. Since there is nothing to tell us exactly the weight, the observers will have to estimate the dewar weight the old way -- by wiggling it. French went to CVS [for a new update?] and is due back soon. I will talk to him about this dewar weight scale display when he gets back. French got back and changed the display to read pounds from kilos. :> Steph and I swapped the grade2 N bottle (the orange bottle) since the one in use was empty. All else went well. Night ----- First up cart 6 plate 1137 (rockosi50) - GSOTGTF 01:08Z: start exposure 1 seeing became quite variable and often bad during this plate's exposures 02:39Z: started to look photometric, but sat map showed approaching clouds, so we continued with spectroscopy. Did not quite finish this plate. R1 was reading significantly lower S/N than the other 'graphs. We see some wispy clouds passing by. 03:07Z: On to cart cart 3, plate 1662 - no GSOTGTF and no fk5 -cleared offsets; still no. Steph found an f5k ~20"E off. (Intuitive guessing!) Seeing was so bad from the last plate that we decided to try another focusLoop - couldn't lose much and it might help! Finished this plate. 05:04Z On to cart 7 plate 1664- the LONG exposure SEGUE plate. No GSOTGTF, but clearing previous large offsets made GS visible. We thought about going to imaging, but we still got the occasional passing clouds and more threats on the weather map. We're guessing we got a S/N^2 of about 15 with these exposures. 07:22Z On to cart 4, plate 1252. No GSOTGTF. Offsets cleared and fk5 was found. This plate is a Taurus plate, but since there are two different Taurus plates, we were concerned which on it was. Our list of special plates (it is really nice if we get updated special plate numbers!) does not list plate 1252, but does show that plate 1253 is a standard survey exposure Taurus plate, so we assume this one is too. (Confirmed, 1253 and 1252 are both Taurus63). Clouds visible to the NW by eye, although not (yet?) in the cloud camera. Seeing was horrendous (3.5m reports 5+") and made centering difficult. We finished this plate, then closed for high winds. While moving the telescope down for closing, it halted abruptly at 15deg - the stop was obviously slow in retracting - it's definitely winter. Through a Google search, we got an add for "Discount Stellar Spectra -new and used". Maybe project management should consider this? ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4284 22:28Z 22:51Z 100 O 111.73 117.40 52 ignore ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n): y QA Procedures Done (y/n): y UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 23475, plate -9999 ------- 22:29 23475 0.0 bias ----- sequence 23476, plate 1137 ------- 22:46 23476 2.1 arc 22:48 23477 2.1 arc 23:00 23478 2.1 arc 23:03 23479 2.1 arc ----- sequence 23480, plate -9999 ------- 23:55 23480 0.0 bias ----- sequence 23481, plate 1137 ------- 01:01 23481 10.0 flat 01:04 23482 2.0 arc 01:25 23483 900.1 target 01:53 23484 1500.1 target 02:22 23485 1500.1 target 02:52 23486 1500.1 target 02:56 23487 10.0 flat 02:58 23488 2.0 arc ----- sequence 23489, plate 1662 ------- 03:21 23489 10.0 flat 03:23 23490 2.0 arc 03:42 23491 900.1 target 04:00 23492 900.1 target 04:29 23493 1500.1 target 04:48 23494 900.1 target DONE ----- sequence 23495, plate 1664 ------- 05:05 23495 10.0 flat 05:07 23496 2.0 arc 05:32 23497 1200.1 target 05:55 23498 1200.1 target 06:18 23499 1200.1 target 06:41 23500 1200.1 target 07:04 23501 1200.1 target 07:07 23502 10.0 flat 07:10 23503 2.0 arc 07:13 23504 10.0 flat 07:15 23505 2.0 arc ----- sequence 23506, plate 1252 ------- 07:55 23506 10.0 flat 07:58 23507 2.0 arc 08:27 23508 1500.1 target 08:50 23509 1200.1 target 09:18 23510 1500.1 target 09:21 23511 10.0 flat 09:24 23512 2.0 arc DONE ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 01:11Z 6 1137 -3.38 0.0036 57.14 -0.0003 177.07 -0.0074 1.000000 03:26Z 3 1662 209.66 -0.0091 65.38 0.0050 43.40 -0.0019 1.000130 05:11Z 7 1664 7.68 0.0008 56.96 -0.0006 186.38 -0.0112 1.000230 08:06Z 4 1252 272.39 -0.0021 75.96 0.0069 101.07 0.0239 1.000250 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Spectro/log tapes shipped only Goes: JL Stays: JL ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 01:11Z 6 1137 1.00000 0 1585 425 -3 57.1 -0.6 16 257 gdr 1.8 01:54Z 6 1137 0.99998 198 1629 300 -23 55.1 -0.9 20 249 gdr 2.5 02:11Z 6 1137 0.99993 691 2042 300 -30 53.5 -0.6 23 263 gdr 2.5 03:26Z 3 1662 1.00013 -1284 277 200 210 65.4 -1.2 17 264 gdr 2 05:12Z 7 1664 1.00023 -2270 -470 250 8 57.0 -1.8 21 272 gdr 2.3 06:41Z 7 1664 1.00023 -2270 -409 300 -31 53.0 -2.8 24 267 gdr 2 08:06Z 4 1252 1.00025 -2468 -621 300 272 75.9 -4.6 12 343 gdr 3? ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 22:24Z 35 17 22 276 (W) 753 - 22:56Z 36 16 17 271 (W) 545 - 23:28Z 34 17 22 261 (W) 1001 - 00:02Z 32 17 21 259 (W) 472 - 00:18Z 31 17 21 251 (WSW) 412 - 00:49Z 31 17 18 265 (W) 408 - 01:20Z 30 17 20 250 (WSW) 568 - 01:50Z 30 16 16 258 (WSW) 561 - 02:20Z 30 15 23 256 (WSW) 389 - 02:52Z 30 13 23 264 (W) 287 - 03:22Z 29 14 22 269 (W) 388 - 03:52Z 29 14 20 265 (W) 487 - 04:23Z 28 15 19 267 (W) 425 - 04:53Z 28 14 18 268 (W) 361 - 05:23Z 29 14 18 273 (W) 338 - 05:54Z 28 14 16 268 (W) 314 - 06:27Z 27 15 21 275 (W) 461 - 07:00Z 26 15 18 278 (W) 427 - 07:31Z 26 14 15 337 (NNW) 313 - 08:02Z 24 12 15 341 (NNW) 625 - 08:33Z 21 11 18 355 (NNW) 515 - 09:04Z 20 9 25 21 (NNE) 489 - 09:36Z 19 7 4 345 (NNW) 506 - 10:08Z 19 5 21 345 (NNW) 488 - 10:40Z 19 2 7 7 (N) 315 - 11:12Z 18 -3 13 12 (NNE) 189 - 11:45Z 18 -7 23 350 (NNW) 182 - ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- 23:15Z Doors and fans on. 00:15Z open 09:35Z closed for high winds 12:00Z turned off fans and shut off amps etc. cart 1 mounted on telescope no interlocks bypassed ---=== SOFTWARE USED ===--- IOP/SOP: v3_121_0 Watcher: v2_24_0 MCP: v5_23_0 TPM: tpm_v2_36_0 AstroDa: v14_47 TCC: TCC 2.7.1 July 22 2003 sdssProcedures: v1_79 SoS: v4_10_6 hoggPT: v1_6_9 plate-mapper: v4_3_1 ---=== MIRROR NUMBERS ===--- PRIMARY: -------- Scale: 1.000000 MIGS TONIGHT NOMINAL Axial A 0.5470 0.5450 Axial B 0.6360 0.6370 Axial C 1.0850 1.0850 Trans D -8.4610 -8.4550 Lateral E 10.8077 10.7442 Lateral F 10.8077 10.7823 GALILS Commanded: 4600. -2850. 850. -9250. 18400. 17850.
