APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Sunday December 21, 2003 (MJD 52995) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Howard Brewington (swing) Mike Harvanek Atsuko Nitta ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- o Tremonti plate is done! o Science plate 1274 done o Good exposures on two more plates We were closed for few hours due to high wind. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon Checkout: -------------------- I (Howard) had to home and relax the primary. So, there are two sets of mirror numbers, i.e., before and after the procedure. Spectro focus was checked and was found to be within spec. Night: -------------------- We opened around sunset, but the clouds were too thick for us to center/focus. So we wait. We found this morning that three bottom drives will not unloade the tapes that were already in. David Schlegel asked us to reboot the drive. The rebooting did good and we were able to get the old tapes out and tapes from last night in. Cart 2 Plate 1491 merged ---------------------- 01:56Z Clouds are starting to think and we find FK5 star. We almost finished this plate. We did not quite finish this plate. It will need one more short exposure (the min. total S/N^2 is 12.3 on this plate). SoS warnings for this plate are: sdR-r1-00024087.fit: WARNING: Max sky-residual chi2 = 70.1499 at 5944.81 Ang (ignoring 5577) sdR-r1-00024088.fit: WARNING: Max sky-residual chi2 = 68.0436 at 5944.48 Ang (ignoring 5577) The sky became photometric but the wind seems to be increasing, and seeing is not quite imaging science quality . Since if we switch to do AW, the AW spoke 30 which we need to do will be out of reaech by the time we get ready for the spoke and the next spoke we need to do is spoke90 which is few hours away. So we opted to observe Tremonti plate which has been plugged for along time and requires one more pointing plug additional exposure at offset3. After Tremonti plate, we can go and put imager on and do the AW spoke 90 and 105. Cart 9 Plate 1180 Tremonti plate ---------------------------------- Fk5 found without clearing offsets. The seeing is getting worse as the wind is getting stronger. Offset3 1200s exposure (last exposure for offset3) Offset6 3x1200s exposures the guider window was a bit sluggish at the beginning. We did postCalib. We complete the Tremonti plate observations. No more staring at the monitor to keep an eye on offsets. While we were obseving this plate, clouds formed right north of us. It looks as though they were to be here any minute. We were not confindent that we will be photometric for long and decided to continue with spectro. Cart 4 Plate 1632 photoz ------------------------ guide stars on gotoField. 06:40Z Wind gust speed over 35m/h. We will see if it persists. After 3x900s, we got S/N^2>11.6. SoS warnings: sdR-r1-00024100.fit: WARNING: Max sky-residual chi2 = 114.809 at 7749.49 Ang (ignoring 5577) Clouds started to move in from the north while we were observing this plate. Cart6 Plate 1274 Science ------------------------- guide stars on gotoField. Seeing is worse, and some clouds come by. We got one science exposure before we were forced to close. 07:50Z Closed due to high wind. 11:50Z We reopen. The air temperature has dropped significantly. It is now -3.4C. The humidity is rising with the temperature drop along with the rise in the dewpoint. Despite of the fact that we left the Edoor cracked and the fans running, the mirrors have several degrees to cool in order to equibrate. preCalib showed that we do not need to refocus. W=e took 3 more 1200s exposures (making total of 4x1200s exposures), we only needed 2 more, but we had time enough for another exposure before twilight. So we got a bonus exposure. i postCalib was taken for this plate. endNight finished successfully. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4339 21:54Z 22:08Z 100 O 127.85 131.39 38 ignore ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n):y QA Procedures Done (y/n):y UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 24078, plate -9999 ------- 21:54 24078 0.0 bias ----- sequence 24079, plate 1435 ------- 23:14 24079 10.0 flat 23:17 24080 2.0 arc 23:21 24081 2.1 arc 23:23 24082 2.1 arc ----- sequence 24083, plate -9999 ------- 00:00 24083 0.0 bias ----- sequence 24084, plate 1491 ------- 19.9 14.7 21.3 12.3 02:09 24084 10.0 flat 02:12 24085 2.0 arc 02:32 24086 900.1 target 02:50 24087 900.1 target 03:08 24088 900.1 target ----- sequence 24089, plate 1180 ------- DONE 03:44 24089 10.0 flat 03:46 24090 2.0 arc 04:12 24091 1200.1 target 04:39 24092 1200.1 target 05:07 24093 1200.1 target 05:40 24094 1200.1 target 05:45 24095 10.0 flat 05:48 24096 2.0 arc ----- sequence 24097, plate 1632 ------- 13.2 13.5 11.6 13.6 06:01 24097 10.0 flat 06:03 24098 2.0 arc 06:24 24099 900.1 target 06:42 24100 900.1 target 07:00 24101 900.1 target ----- sequence 24102, plate 1274 ------- 35.3 26.7 44.4 26.2 07:22 24102 10.0 flat 07:25 24103 2.0 arc 07:52 24104 1200.1 target 11:20 24105 10.0 flat 11:23 24106 2.0 arc 11:47 24107 1200.1 target 12:10 24108 1200.1 target 12:33 24109 1200.1 target 12:36 24110 10.0 flat 12:38 24111 2.0 arc ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 02:46Z 2 1491 -37.25 0.0037 51.02 0.0016 149.33 0.0015 0.999940 03:41Z 9 1180 17.89 0.0042 55.90 0.0009 194.91 0.0096 1.000210 06:13Z 4 1632 -37.50 0.0042 50.96 0.0020 149.14 -0.0158 1.000130 07:32Z 6 1274 106.92 0.0021 54.33 0.0011 -98.32 -0.0165 1.000110 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL 7121 Stays: JL 7122 ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 02:46Z 2 1491 0.99994 593 1868 200 -37 51.0 4.8 16 266 gdr 1.8 03:41Z 9 1180 1.00021 -2073 -478 75 18 55.9 4.3 18 236 gdr 1.5 06:16Z 4 1632 1.00023 -2270 -526 175 -39 50.6 2.7 18 259 gdr 2.0 07:32Z 6 1274 1.00011 -1086 494 225 107 54.4 1.4 25 268 gdr 2.5 ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 21:39Z 46 7 9 261 (W) 1310 - 22:11Z 47 5 7 246 (WSW) 1212 - 22:43Z 46 6 11 237 (WSW) 1328 - 23:17Z 45 3 16 224 (SW) 866 - 23:48Z 43 2 14 247 (WSW) 805 - 00:32Z 41 5 14 225 (SW) 1189 - 01:04Z 40 5 13 240 (WSW) 1183 - 01:35Z 40 7 16 244 (WSW) 1150 - 02:09Z 41 8 17 254 (WSW) 897 - 02:41Z 41 9 21 260 (W) 855 - 03:12Z 41 8 15 250 (WSW) 831 - 03:45Z 39 8 14 246 (WSW) 980 - 04:17Z 39 9 19 239 (WSW) 1143 - 04:50Z 38 10 28 220 (SW) 1388 - 05:22Z 38 10 20 249 (WSW) 1467 - 05:54Z 36 10 19 261 (W) 1498 - 06:25Z 36 10 19 252 (WSW) 1392 - 06:55Z 35 13 30 262 (W) 861 - 07:26Z 34 13 25 268 (W) 792 - 07:58Z 33 14 28 267 (W) 534 - 08:30Z 32 13 29 276 (W) 497 - 09:03Z 31 12 33 291 (WNW) 472 - 09:35Z 29 13 28 293 (WNW) 393 - 10:07Z 27 10 19 304 (NW) 354 - 10:39Z 26 12 11 356 (NNW) 323 - 11:12Z 25 14 12 352 (NNW) 438 - 11:44Z 25 16 12 3 (N) 331 - 12:16Z 25 18 11 2 (N) 325 - 12:50Z 25 18 20 20 (NNE) 233 - ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- 23:30Z Doors cracked, fans on, and louvers opened. 00:10Z Enclosure off. 07:50Z Enclosue on but with Edoor cracked and fans running. 11:50Z Enclosure off. 12:45Z Closed, fans off.
