APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Tuesday December 30, 2003 (MJD 53004) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Swing: Howard Brewington Night: Dan Long Jurek Krzesinski + French Leger and Jon Brinkman most of the night. ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- We will try to fix the problem with spectrograph collimators. ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- We were closed all night due to actuator problem in sp2. The problem was narrowed down to actuator A in sp2 not moving. French and Jon replaced bad actuator, and Dan menaged to get both spectrographs back in spec. Unfortunately we do not know why we cannot get NGOODFIBER in spec :(( whatever we do they are showing in red in SOS. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon Checkout: -------------------- Spectros were checked (on plate 1630), and the waveMax numbers for r2 were red and b2 were yellow; the numbers were too small. So, I did a mechMoveColl to get the numbers in spec. And they were (see arc exposure 24442). Next, I did a goSpecFocus to check the focus and discovered that both spectrographs were out of focus. But, I also noticed that r2 waveMax had decreased already in value and was now yellow (arc 24444). I did another goSpecFocus but did not make any adjustments to the yellow number of waveMax of r2. I issued the recommended mechPistion commands and corrected the focus. However, the numbers for r2 and b2 were now red (arc: 24445,24446). And again, the numbers were too small. See the problems section for details. Jim asked us: "So observers: please check to see that all OBVIOUS sources of LED illumination are off--the instrument change control panel is supposed to shut off automatically when the telescope goes below 87 degrees." in his recent e-mail. So French removed the additional phone at the telescope control panel side, which could have been responsible for some of red LED light - if not all of them. We are not using that phone at all, but it was on all the time, and IT HAS GOT 1 LED ON (always)+ ... MORE RED LEDs ON and OFF when someone was calling APO. Night: ------- Howard couldn't get sp2 in focus, so Dan started the night with more tests on sp2 (at the moment we couldn't observe anyway because of clouds, but during second half of the night the weather had improved). He found out that sp2 actuator A is not moving at all -see his test notes below. French and Jon started to work on this and got into the actuators. Indeed - it was the actuator A problem they said. They menaged to fix the problem after a few hours of work (the separate report will be sent on their part). Now we need to set collimators back in spec. And that was A LOT OF WORK TOO - see second Dan's report below. Unfortunately, we were not able to get NGOODFIBERs in spec. Whatever we did it stayed red for sp2 b2,r2 :(((. 13:00 Z We gave up for tonight (we are too tired). But at least we left spectrographs in focus (not completely in spec). endNight run on cloudy tapes. ---------------------------- I.
