APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Wednesday March 10, 2004 (MJD 53075) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Swing: Pete Newman Night: John Barentine, Atusuko Nitta, Jurek Krzesinski Support: Jon Brinkmann, French Leger ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science then shake. ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- We've done one plate (1747) and useful signal on two other. Clouds shut us down during the second part of the night. We've got az axis abort on every instChange command and a couple of time on trying to go for fk5 star. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Swing shift =========== M2 was homed per the discussion at the engineering phone conference this afternoon following the replacement of the transverse D actuator MIG battery. Spectrograph collimation and focus were checked. Collimation was good. See the end of this log for focus adjustments, which were problematic. Night: ------ We mounted cart 5 plt 1154 on the telescope. fk5 used to find the guide stars - 10" E offset had to be applied to center fk5 star in the fiber. Seeing deteriorated quite a bit on the last exposure. All together we've got 2 useful exposures on that plate and the last exposure which got S/N ~ 2 on b2 (not quite 2.0 because SOS printed it in yellow) we declared as bad. 03:49Z - az axis aborted on going to instChange position. BTW we don't see in telrun "one or more axes did not end on a full step", so it looks like homing and relaxing secondary which Pete has done this afternoon helped. 03:55Z cart 7 plt 1747 mounted. Stars on go to field. The weather is getting worse. Done with 4 exposures. Postcalib recomended and taken. 05:53Z AZ axis aborted on going to instChange position. 06:00Z cart 8 plt 1604 mounted. Stars on go to field. 08:17Z After clouds got thinner we tried to go for fk5 star and got AZ axis abort. We axis init a couple of time but that didn't help, Az kept abording, so following French's advice to clear the brake from MCP, we did it and AZ break went away. Then wen we were trying to slew using MCP AZ aborted. Then we cleared it again and moved the telescope slightly with MCP - still good, so we switched to tcc and within telrun we went for fk5. The star was found and centered. Seeing looks very bad. After it cleared out we've got one useful exposure on that plate. 09:06Z AZ aborted - we can hardly inst change without it :(((. 09:11Z cart 9 plt 1374 mounted. fk5 star found with 13" E offset. Humidity goes up. We are close to closing conditions (which means we are checking rails and the telescope itself for condensation). 09:42Z Clouds are coming again - the efficiency dropped below 30 % - we'll not anything useful through these clouds. 09:48Z Since the efficiency is low and humidity is high, we decided to close the telescope and let it wait inside the enclosure for better condition. A while after we closed we've got high humidity warning. 11:18Z We run endNight. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4497 23:23Z 23:58Z 100 O -130.98 -122.30 66 ignore ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n): y QA Procedures Done (y/n): y UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 25510, plate -9999 ------- 23:26 25510 0.0 bias ----- sequence 25511, plate 1353 ------- 23:37 25511 10.0 flat 23:40 25512 2.0 arc 23:52 25513 10.0 flat 23:55 25514 2.0 arc 00:00 25515 10.0 flat 00:02 25516 2.0 arc 00:10 25517 2.1 arc 00:13 25518 2.1 arc 00:58 25519 2.1 arc 01:00 25520 2.1 arc ----- sequence 25521, plate 1154 ------- 01:56 25521 0.0 bias 02:01 25522 0.0 bias 02:29 25523 10.0 flat 02:31 25524 2.0 arc 02:55 25525 1200.1 target 03:18 25526 1200.1 target 03:46 25527 1200.1 target bad ----- sequence 25528, plate 1747 ------- 04:10 25528 10.0 flat 04:13 25529 2.0 arc 04:33 25530 900.1 target 04:50 25531 900.1 target 05:18 25532 1500.1 target 05:46 25533 1500.1 target 05:49 25534 10.0 flat 05:52 25535 2.0 arc ----- sequence 25536, plate 1604 ------- 06:16 25536 10.0 flat 06:19 25537 2.0 arc 06:43 25538 1179.6 target bad 09:00 25539 1500.1 target 09:03 25540 10.0 flat 09:05 25541 2.0 arc ----- sequence 25542, plate 1374 ------- 09:35 25542 10.0 flat 09:38 25543 2.0 arc ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 02:45Z 5 1154 36.50 0.0051 51.23 -0.0004 209.94 -0.0090 0.999950 05:06Z 7 1747 43.30 0.0064 64.96 0.0008 216.28 -0.0121 1.000400 06:58Z 8 1604 -0.72 0.0087 69.13 0.0005 179.34 -0.0046 1.000240 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL7296 Stays: JL7297 ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 02:45Z 5 1154 0.99995 494 1686 100 37 51.2 8.9 2 20 gdr 1.4 05:05Z 7 1747 1.00040 -3949 -2028 100 44 64.9 8.0 6 81 gdr 1.8 06:58Z 8 1604 1.00024 -2369 -679 150 -1 69.1 7.0 13 77 gdr 1.6 ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 23:00Z 52 14 7 263 (W) -9999 - 23:31Z 50 14 5 262 (W) -9999 - 00:03Z 50 15 4 267 (W) -9999 - 00:33Z 50 16 1 306 (NW) -9999 - 01:03Z 48 17 4 14 (NNE) -9999 - 01:26Z 48 18 1 349 (NNW) -9999 - 01:58Z 48 19 0 342 (NNW) -9999 - 02:30Z 48 19 0 2 (N) -9999 - 03:01Z 44 25 14 69 (ENE) -9999 - 03:31Z 43 28 14 76 (ENE) -9999 - 04:02Z 44 27 10 84 (E) -9999 - 04:33Z 44 27 9 82 (E) -9999 - 05:04Z 45 23 6 83 (E) -9999 - 05:36Z 45 25 9 81 (E) -9999 - 06:06Z 44 26 12 81 (E) -9999 - 06:36Z 44 25 14 79 (E) -9999 - 07:08Z 44 21 13 86 (E) -9999 - 07:39Z 42 27 16 77 (ENE) -9999 - 08:09Z 42 26 16 86 (E) -9999 - 08:41Z 38 30 20 80 (E) -9999 - 09:11Z 36 30 21 77 (ENE) -9999 - 09:42Z 36 30 18 83 (E) -9999 - 10:14Z 33 29 21 81 (E) -9999 - 10:46Z 32 30 21 82 (E) -9999 - 11:18Z 34 30 18 82 (E) -9999 - ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- 01:40Z Telescope opened fans on.
