APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Saturday March 27, 2004 (MJD 53092) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Night: Howard Brewington Steph Snedden ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- We completed all the shakeup tasks except the pointing model; however, dust kept us closed all night. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon ------------ The dust counter at the PT is still not working, so we used the handheld unit to take reading ~every thirty minutes. 23:57Z 1.0u dust count at 3.5K 00:30Z 1.0u dust count at 3.2K Although we recycled the power on the dust counter yesterday without success, its operation was restored today by recycling the power. 01:13Z 1.0u dust count at 3.8K (per the PT dust counter). Spectro focus/collimation was checked and adjusted; see problems section for details. Night/Shakeup ------------ SoS Since a cartridge was mounted, we decided to do the SoS shake-item first. Likewise, we wanted to contact Craig before his bedtime. Craig said that "bandwidth flag to rsynch use" had been explored and was not the answer with respect to "SoS image rsynchs causing the guider images to be slow in getting to 'host.'" The bandwidth flag reduces the bandwidth to much too low a level. He suggested that we do a bias loop while running the guider, and he would monitor these procedures from home. During this test, Craig recommended that we leave the compression with blowfish, and that rsynch should be tried in a serial format, i.e., not send the blue and red spectro image files at the same time. Craig said that he would study the problem and contact us later in the evening. He did get some useful data regarding network traffic during gcams and rsyncs to SoS, but it sounds like more work needs to be done. SOP We confirmed that "gGuide on" was now the default in the test version of SOP. We also confirmed that the echoes described in this shake-item were present in the -t version of this software. With respect to Scot's statement, "I fixed a few minor layout problems in the SOPGUI," we did notice any changes. Imager Test A "checkBias 4534 30 ." was completed, and we found no errors. The results are posted on our web-site at http://sdsshost.apo.nmsu.edu/skycat/imager/53092. As was the case with checkFlat, i.e., we found no errors. 05:12Z Because the PT dust counter stopped working again, we recycled its power again by disconnecting and reconnecting the plug at the base of the air sampler. This restored the counter for a while. So, we waited. 08:03Z Our dust counter (at the PT) just failed again, and we're afraid to recycle the power anymore. With the handheld unit, though, we just got a reading of 3.9K endNight finished and was happy. We powered down the DIMM and noticed that it had not rebooted in the last couple of days. We think the rebooting problem is related to the VNC server. Misc.
