APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Wednesday August 18, 2004 (MJD 53236) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Swing: Jurek Krzesinski Night: Steph Snedden, Pete Newman Support: Connie Rockosi (UW, by phone) Visitor: Jeffrey J.E. Hayes ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science. ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- First half of the night lost to weather, and the couple of hours of useable sky in the second half lost to the r2 cross-talk problem...which we hope we may have solved with much help from Connie. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: ---------- DAs - ok., Imager -ok. (accidently I called one doghouse bias as "bias" not "ignore"). Host rebooted. Spectrographs - in spec. nothing was changed. Telescope ok. MIGs - ok. Night: ------ Combinations of humidity and cloudsfrom sunset kept us closed, so we conducted further spectrograph tests. Dan wanted to see if the suppressed arc NLAMPS after a flat that we saw last night was because we never gave the lamps time to recover. Tonight, we ran sequences of 4 flat/arc pairs separated by long time intervals. Here are the details. Frames 28048 - 28055: Four sequential post-cal flat/arc pairs. Lamps rested for 15 minutes. Frames 28056 - 28063: Four more flat/arc pairs Lamps rested for 30 minutes Frames 28064 - 28071: Four more flat/arc pairs Lamps rested for 45 minutes Frames 28072 - 28079: Four more flat/arc pairs We intended to do a rest of 1 hour, but at 06:25Z the weather had improved enough to try spectroscopy. Observing sequence: 06:28Z Plate 1890, cartridge 2. FK5 found with cleared offsets, but no guide stars, as clouds appeared again. We wait. We discovered later that the preCalib arc for this plate shows crosstalk in r2 (exposure 28083). However we did not note the telescope position. During the clouds, we slewed back to (121,30,45) where we took another preCalibs, whose arc (28085) does not show crosstalk. We also adjusted focus and collimation for both cameras at this position, and a follow-up arc shows no obvious crosstalk. See end of log for the focus adjustments. 09:06Z Plate 1144, cartridge 9. Rockosi program requiring standard S/N. Guide stars found with cleared offsets. Excellent seeing, but some patchy clouds. The preCalibs arc (28093) shows cross-talk very obvious in the saoDisp display. We took photographs of the r2 camera and associated wiring with the telescope in this position with the axes at about (45,-50,140). For 28093 arc, the watcher reported: dsc E trcErr WRONG num of pix?? for (sr<<16)|ccd:0x00000001 rowIdx:289 (dsc_E_trcErr WRONG num of pix?? for (sr<<16)|ccd:0x00000001 rowIdx:289 : 2004-08-19 09:16:52Z ) dsc E trcErr WRONG num of pix?? for (sr<<16)|ccd:0x00000000 rowIdx:289 (dsc_E_trcErr WRONG num of pix?? for (sr<<16)|ccd:0x00000000 rowIdx:289 : 2004-08-19 09:16:52Z ) dsc E trcErr WRONG num of pix?? 2126 should be 2128 (dsc_E_trcErr WRONG num of pix?? 2126 should be 2128 : 2004-08-19 09:16:52Z ) Note that these CCD numbers are for sp1, not sp2. Huh? The science exposure that was running (exposure 28094) shows the left half of r2 going to all zeros about aquarter of the way down the frame. We discussed this evidence with Connie, and the finger was pointed at the DB15 connector that carries data out of the r2 camera electronics saddle bag. We tried power-cycling the sp2 cameras, but after a couple of biases, an arc (exposure 28101) still showed strong cross-talk in r2. We then swapped the DB15 connector block and the saddle bag end cap, taking the set from the bench-test saddle bag in the SDSS lab. We then slewed back to the "problem" position and took another arc (exp 28105), which looked good with no evidence of crosstalk. We sent an email to Wendell (copy to sdss-apodaylog) describing the present state of the swapped connectors as there were some minor mating issues when screwing down the end cap. The final arcs of the night were taken with the replacement saddlebag end cap & data connector. We slewed the telescope to different positions between arcs so that we could test the robustness of the connection. Hooray? By this time it was past morning twilight, so we stopped. endNight was run onto the cloudy-night tapes.
