APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Monday October 4, 2004 (MJD 53283) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- swing Pete Newman night Steph Snedden, Jurek Krzesinski visitors: Jennifer Adelman-McCarthy ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Shakedown. ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- We've got new fiducial tables and new nominal MIGs. M1 and M2 homed and relaxed. Not much done, because we were closed all the night due to high humidity and lightning. According to the weather tap lightning map, the lightning was on top of us, but there was NO proximity warning on the displayweath weather status window. Are we getting proper information from outside sensors? ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- AFTERNOON: ---------- No problems during pre-flight checks until the physical telescope checks, when it was found that although the new altitude fiducial read head was successfully reading all the fiducial marks, no account had been taken in MCP for the movement of the read head with respect to the forks by about an inch. When the telescope was commanded to alt=90, the locking pin was thus an inch away from the pin hole in the altitude drive quadrant. Moveing the telescope to nominal 90deg54min had the pin well centered. MCP was then told the telescope was at 90deg0min with the "p" command in mcpMenu. After some experimentation, we realise we needed to modify the fiducial sweep data to take account of this change, so we simply took another set of four sweeps between 90deg and 10deg and back, then rebuilt the altitude fiducials table from that per standard procedures. When this was implemented (mcp_fiducials version v1_24), the altitude once more went to pinable zenith when sent to alt=90. Thanks to Steph and Jurek for picking up the remaining pre-flight checks that I (Pete) got behind with sorting out the fiducials. DA check ok. eng camera mounted. Night: ------ Humidity is rising. We started with homing and relaxing mirrors. While homeing and relaxing the secondary mirror we noticed that on actuator C it took two trials to find the home switch - it doesn't seem to be a problem but we put note about that in the problem section. MIGs for primary were in spec, the secondary D axis was out of spec (of course) and the rest of axies were very close to nominal values. New nominal values were set (new and old nominal values are in the mirror section). Procedure change log checked, new procedures were verified, all changes listed were implemented correctly (procedures v1_94). Russell's request to check procedures/commands done - seems to be/work fine. 01:51Z We closed the telescope doors - high humidity. We tried to test: stripeAxisPositions, bestStartWrap, and scanStripe commands, but only menaged to test and compare stripeAxisRates outputs in old and new iop versions (v3_138_0 and v3_140_0). Full tests of the other commands need to be done on the sky. 08:51Z Lightning all around us. No 15 milles warning yet, but we covered the cloud camera. 10:00Z rain - just a few drops which set the rain sensor on. 10:56Z We run endnight - there is no hope it will get better. endnight was run on cloudy tapes and finished ok. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n): eng camera mounted QA Procedures Done (y/n): eng camera mounted UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 00:38 28740 0.0 bias ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL none Stays: JL none ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 21:08Z 59 41 9 269 (W) 0 - 21:40Z 61 39 10 266 (W) 0 - 22:13Z 58 44 2 265 (W) 0 - 22:45Z 62 41 13 236 (SW) 0 - 01:06Z 51 44 5 78 (ENE) 0 - 01:38Z 49 46 15 66 (ENE) 0 - 02:11Z 49 42 14 59 (ENE) 0 - 02:43Z 46 44 17 73 (ENE) 0 - 03:15Z 46 44 19 73 (ENE) 0 - 03:47Z 46 43 23 73 (ENE) 0 - 04:20Z 46 43 18 75 (ENE) 0 - 04:52Z 46 43 17 78 (ENE) 0 - 05:24Z 46 43 16 71 (ENE) 0 - 05:56Z 46 43 13 81 (E) 0 - 06:28Z 46 43 14 84 (E) 0 - 07:05Z 46 43 14 93 (E) 0 - 07:37Z 46 43 15 108 (ESE) 0 - 08:09Z 47 42 20 110 (ESE) 0 - 08:42Z 47 43 20 122 (ESE) 0 - 09:14Z 47 41 21 130 (SE) 0 - 09:46Z 47 43 17 134 (SE) 0 - 10:22Z 47 44 21 125 (SE) 0 - 10:55Z 46 45 23 128 (SE) 0 - ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- 00:30Z fans on, doors open 01:51Z fans off, doors closed (high humidity). 03:31Z the heater was switched on inside enclosure. 11:10Z The telescope was put to bed, hoses hooked up, spec dewars refilled. ---=== SOFTWARE USED ===--- IOP/SOP: v3_142_0 Watcher: v2_29_0 MCP: v5_25_0 TPM: tpm_v2_42_0 AstroDa: v14_47 TCC: TCC 2.7.2.1 August 6 2004 sdssProcedures: v1_94 SoS: v4_10_7 hoggPT: v1_6_9 plate-mapper: v4_3_1 ---=== MIRROR NUMBERS ===--- PRIMARY: -------- Scale: 0.999201 MIGS TONIGHT NOMINAL Axial A 0.5310 0.5290 Axial B 0.6060 0.6100 Axial C 0.9170 0.9250 Trans D -8.1770 -8.1740 Lateral E 10.0330 10.0457 Lateral F 11.5824 11.5951 GALILS Commanded: 4950. -2250. 2550. -13750. -7850. -7900.
