APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Friday November 5, 2004 (MJD 53315) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Pete Newman Steph Snedden Mike Harvanek (swing) Visitor: Rick Kessler (SNe Team, U. Chicago) Support: Craig Loomis ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- A good night for spectroscopy. Finished two plates (1907, 1922) and got good signal on three more. Notes for the day staff (details in the log body): 1) The DIMM alt drive does have problems. 2) The TPM was saying we had excessive front-back M2 temp differences. Is it real? Possibly, as the air temp was changing, but worth checking. It was partly cloudy at the time. 3) Cartridge 9 guide fiber 9 looks like it has a thread lying across it. Could the fiber ends please be cleaned? Thanks. 4) We did not see any missed crossings of the 45 degree alt fiducial as reported yesterday. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: ---------- Spectro collimation adjusted. Details in the Problems section. No problems to report. Night: ------ At approx. 00:15Z we tried to send the telescope to instrument change inside the enclosure, using "track 121,90 mount". A very scary thing then happened. The telescope started slewing in all three axes INSIDE the enclosure. A stop button was thrown at az approx. 126 degrees. Is 126 degrees az greater than the interlocks should allow at an alt of about 66 deg? If so, the interlocks did not stop the telescope. No interlocks were bypassed. Subsequent slews were fine. The DIMM computer was in a confused state, and needed a hard reboot. We accidentally turned off the UPS power when we did this, and when we tried to power it back up, it would not stay on. There was also a warning light on about line power failure. Craig came in, reseated some plugs and the UPS power came on. Nobody feels comfortable about this solution, though, and a UPS checkout should be added to the bright-time engineering list. A Pr was filed. We opened at sunset for spectroscopy under partly cloudy skies. It stayed partly cloudy all night, with a few brief excursions to mostly cloudy 00:44Z - Cartridge 8, plate 1962 - SEGUE Faint GSOGTF with last night's offsets. Started pre-cals at 01:15Z. Seeing was excellent, but light cloud cover kept the efficiency variable. We pounded on this plate as long as possible, but clouds kept us from finishing it. We did get (S/N)**2 = 28.1 in a total of 4800 s. We lost 1200 s to clouds that prevented us from getting a useable S/N on one exposure. A glare from an FK5 allowed us to find stars. We couldn't finish this plate before it was out of range for the night, but did get (S/N)**2=17.9 in 4800s. 04:11Z - We shut down the DIMM when it lost Polaris. The motor motion was not smooth at "center" speed, and the manual alt motion knob slipped when turned slightly. We couldn't open the cover without scattering a lot of light from flashlights, and did not want to jeopardize science, so just shut the DIMM down. We will start the Meade up during the afternoon and try to create a drive failure during daylight. 05:37Z - Cartridge 6, plate 1907 - SEGUE faint GSOGTF. Adding the (S/N)**2=11.2 to the 38.7 from previous nights, we declared this plate done with a total exposure time of 2400s. 07:01Z - Cartridge 9, plate 1560 - lowz plate GSOGTF. Guide fiber 9 looks like it may have a thread lying across it. Could someone check it please? 07:32Z - We stopped observing as thick clouds came over. No useable signal on this plate. 08:27Z - The clouds started to thin. 08:43Z - Cartridge 4, plate 1922 - Survey plate No GSOGTF. Cleared offsets, still no guide stars. Went to an FK5, still nothing. All fiducial crossings were small. Did spiralPattern, and that found the FK5. The offset needed was -15 asec RA, +10 asec Dec, which converted to an offset that was mostly in altitude. 08:59Z - PTVME backplane error. Did a PTVME reset, but had to log out the ports as well. Error messages are in the problems section. The servers restarted themselves on the hour via the cron job. 09:20Z - We get back on the field. Finished the plate with a total exposure time of 4800s. 11:10Z - Cartridge 3, plate 1926 - Survey plate GSOGTF, with the large offsets from the previous survey plate. Moon and twilight kept us from finishing this plate, but we got useable signal. Total exposure time: 1200s. Two 1200s exposures were no good because of Moon and clouds. 12:24Z - We closed. endNight -doSpectro -doTpm rejoiced. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4934 22:44Z 23:18Z 100 O 95.77 104.31 71 ignore ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n):y QA Procedures Done (y/n):y UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 29165, plate -9999 ------- 22:48 29165 0.0 bias ----- sequence 29166, plate 1867 ------- 23:18 29166 10.0 flat collimation 23:21 29167 2.0 arc collimation 23:26 29168 2.1 arc collimation 23:28 29169 2.1 arc collimation 23:40 29170 2.1 arc collimation 23:42 29171 2.1 arc collimation ----- sequence 29172, plate -9999 ------- 00:37 29172 0.0 bias ----- sequence 29173, plate 1962 ------- 01:17 29173 10.0 flat 01:20 29174 2.0 arc 01:46 29175 1200.1 target 02:18 29176 1200.1 target 02:41 29177 1200.1 target 03:04 29178 1200.1 target 03:27 29179 1200.1 target 03:30 29180 10.0 flat 03:32 29181 2.0 arc ----- sequence 29182, plate 1913 ------- 03:46 29182 10.0 flat 03:48 29183 2.0 arc 04:13 29184 1200.1 target 04:36 29185 1200.1 target 04:59 29186 1200.1 target 05:22 29187 1200.1 target 05:25 29188 10.0 flat 05:27 29189 2.0 arc ----- sequence 29190, plate 1907 ------- 05:39 29190 10.0 flat 05:41 29191 2.0 arc 06:05 29192 1200.1 target 06:29 29193 1200.1 target 06:51 29194 1200.1 target ----- sequence 29195, plate 1560 ------- 07:03 29195 10.0 flat 07:06 29196 2.0 arc 07:28 29197 835.6 target 08:29 29198 10.0 flat 08:32 29199 2.0 arc ----- sequence 29200, plate 1922 ------- 08:58 29200 10.0 flat ----- sequence 29200, plate 1922 ------- 08:58 29200 10.0 flat ----- sequence 29201, plate -9999 ------- 09:07 29201 0.0 bias ----- sequence 29202, plate 1922 ------- 09:15 29202 10.0 flat 09:18 29203 2.0 arc 09:44 29204 1200.1 target 10:07 29205 1200.1 target 10:30 29206 1200.1 target 10:53 29207 1200.1 target 10:56 29208 10.0 flat 10:59 29209 2.0 arc ----- sequence 29210, plate 1926 ------- 11:14 29210 10.0 flat 11:16 29211 2.0 arc 11:41 29212 1200.1 target 12:03 29213 1200.1 target 12:26 29214 1200.1 target ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 00:58Z 8 0 21.33 -0.0010 67.28 0.0026 198.06 0.0086 1.000170 02:26Z 8 1962 -33.56 0.0024 65.16 0.0026 151.58 0.0009 1.000140 03:56Z 2 1913 10.03 -0.0014 46.76 0.0036 188.47 0.0146 1.000030 04:38Z 2 1913 -4.99 -0.0012 47.15 0.0033 175.66 0.0078 0.999990 05:43Z 6 1907 0.31 0.0002 57.26 0.0028 180.16 -0.0099 1.000020 07:13Z 9 1560 -15.29 0.0001 56.35 0.0021 167.10 -0.0037 1.000060 09:25Z 4 1922 79.18 -0.0001 53.10 0.0052 241.26 -0.0032 1.000310 11:19Z 3 1926 57.51 -0.0015 73.33 0.0051 230.27 0.0262 1.000310 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL8075 Stays: JL8076 ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 00:58Z unknown 1.00017 -1678 -313 -60 21 67.3 10.2 10 291 -
