APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Wednesday November 10, 2004 (MJD 53320) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Howard Brewington John Barentine Mike Harvanek (swing) Dan Long (phone) Visitor: Douglas Tucker (FNAL) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- New altitude fiducial table (v1_34). Most of the night was lost to clouds and humidity, but we did complete two exposures on Cart 02, plate 1927. We did not have time to mount the engCam and do a pointing model. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: ---------- Busy. Spectro positioning (xmax for r2) was out of spec and had to be adjusted. Note that it was cartridge 8 and NOT cartridge 1 that was mounted this time. Details in the Problems section. Spectro collimation was adjusted. See the Problems section for details. Windscreen touch during checkout: altitude (Windscreen touched in altitude: UP (2004-11-10 22:51:55Z sdssmcp): 2004-11-10 22:52:00Z) A new altitude fiducial table was built, tagged and installed (v1_34). All altitude fiducials between 6 and 90 were read in both directions (up and down), all corrections were small and applied, and the telescope pinned easily at 90 degrees. No other problems to report. Night: ------ The fiducial work delayed opening until 06:20 (just before twilight ended). There was an azimuth windscreen touch on the opening slew: azimuth (Windscreen touched in azimuth: CW (2004-11-11 01:50:57Z sdssmcp): 2004-11-11 01:51:07Z) This MAY have been due to the wind twisting the Jib Crane Interlock Key card which turned the key and activated the stop button on the south side of the telescope. The card was removed and given to French who is aware of the problem. However, we are not certain this was the cause of the az windscreen touch. We opened to clouds but hoped that we could at least check pointing. We went to the FK5 star nearest plate 1962 (cartridge 8) but found nothing. Not sure if it's the clouds or our pointing though. Clouds did not allow us to make any more observations for the next several hours. 04:00Z Dan was called, and we (Mike included) decided that the telescope should be offset by 100" in altitude to locate the field. However, humidity became a problem, and we closed. 10:00Z Humidty started to decrease. 10:45Z Cart 03, plate 1927 (chunk99). No guide stars on go_to_Field nor Fk5 star found. We offset the Fk5 star by 100" in TCC with the command "offset Calib 0.000,0.0272,0.00 /computed /pabs" Then we did a spiralPattern and found the Fk5; The total offsets included RaOff -17" and DecOff 7.2" We, unfortunately, did not have enough time to mount the engcam and do a pointing model. We completed two exposures on this plate. See problems section for misc Watcher messages. endNight finished and was happy. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4949 22:53Z 23:32Z 100 O 103.01 112.81 79 ignore ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n): y QA Procedures Done (y/n): y UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 29304, plate -9999 ------- 22:44 29304 0.0 bias ----- sequence 29305, plate 1962 ------- 23:31 29305 10.0 flat collimation 23:33 29306 2.0 arc collimation 23:36 29307 2.1 arc collimation 23:38 29308 2.1 arc collimation 23:46 29309 10.0 flat positioning r2 xmax 23:49 29310 2.0 arc positioning r2 xmax 23:54 29311 2.1 arc collimation 23:56 29312 2.1 arc collimation 00:11 29313 2.1 arc collimation 00:13 29314 2.1 arc collimation 00:23 29315 10.0 flat collimation/positioning check 00:26 29316 2.0 arc collimation/positioning check ----- sequence 29317, plate -9999 ------- 00:30 29317 0.0 bias 00:36 29318 0.0 bias ----- sequence 29319, plate 1927 ------- 11:28 29319 10.0 flat 11:30 29320 2.0 arc 11:54 29321 1200.1 target 12:17 29322 1200.1 target 12:20 29323 10.0 flat 12:23 29324 2.0 arc ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 11:25Z 3 1927 38.80 -0.0032 75.79 -0.0223 214.39 0.0290 1.000300 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL 8110 Stays: JL 8111 ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 11:24Z 3 1927 1.00030 -2961 -1104 225 39 75.7 -1.6 6 150 gdr 2.9 ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 22:24Z 45 15 5 6 (N) 113 - 22:57Z 45 10 8 38 (NE) 54 - 23:28Z 44 11 13 44 (NE) 71 - 23:59Z 44 11 5 10 (N) 81 - 00:31Z 41 11 9 44 (NE) 120 - 01:01Z 41 16 17 76 (ENE) 195 - 01:31Z 40 18 14 76 (ENE) 243 - partly cloudy 02:01Z 39 18 18 72 (ENE) 334 - mostly cloudy 02:32Z 39 18 19 84 (E) 192 - 03:00Z 39 18 21 71 (ENE) 205 - 03:33Z 39 19 12 83 (E) 219 - 04:05Z 38 18 21 82 (E) 309 - 04:38Z 34 24 26 73 (ENE) 380 - 05:11Z 32 27 23 76 (ENE) 470 - mostly cloudy 05:43Z 31 28 17 75 (ENE) 581 - 06:15Z 30 27 16 82 (E) 629 - clear 06:47Z 29 26 17 79 (E) 700 - 07:20Z 29 26 14 88 (E) 597 - 07:52Z 28 26 12 82 (E) 524 - 08:24Z 28 26 10 86 (E) 730 - clear 08:56Z 27 26 9 86 (E) 766 - 09:29Z 29 24 3 177 (S) 310 - 10:01Z 30 22 9 160 (SSE) 219 - 10:33Z 31 20 10 179 (S) 220 - clear 11:06Z 30 21 7 105 (ESE) 225 - 11:38Z 31 20 4 101 (E) 232 - 12:08Z 33 20 7 126 (SE) 218 - 12:41Z 32 21 6 120 (ESE) 237 - ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- 00:35Z Enclosure doors opened, fans and blowers on, louvers opened. 01:20Z Enclosure off (fiducial work delayed opening). 05:15Z Enclousre on because of humidity 10:30Z Enclosure off 12:35Z Enclosure on Telescope at 121,30,00 with cart 03 mounted.
