APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Friday December 10, 2004 (MJD 53350) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Swing: Dan Long Night: Steph Snedden Jurek Krzesinski ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- First hour of imaging in the night lost due to bad seeing. Plates done: 2049, 1932 Second half of the night: imaging --------------------------------- In two runs 5037, 5038 we've done 23 S stripe between lambda: -66.0 up to -25.0 (science between lambda: -64 up to -27). WARNING: the end of the ramp of the scan was done in twilight we noticed ~12 and 3 ADU increase in the sky level on chips 53 and 33 when the scan ended. Problems: Plate 2045, in b1 showed s/n barely over 2, while we've got plenty of signal in b2. See the log. "guider frames did not arrived problems" - too many for one night, also offset command failed 3 times (we don't realy know if that was "time out" problem). We've got caught tonight by our old problem of the guide fibers not centering properly on the yellow spots of the guider flat. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: ---------- Another nice uneventful afternoon checkout. Spectrograph focus continues to be happy where it is. Night: ------ 00:10Z Imager was mounted, but at the same time the wind has switched from south, to north. 01:10Z Bias on the telescope done (run 5034). Run 5034 was used to setup the focus and check the pointing, but since we would have been 10 miunetes late in twilight with the current setting we stopped the run and started the new one, so the ramp stars at the beginning of twilight. Stripe 82 S, run 5036: Frame 10, lambda 159.7 start of the ramp. Frame 25, lambda 162 science starts. Skippy is happy. Seeing is variable but acceptable, maybe because the mirros are still not in equlibrum? 01:56Z Mirrors are in equilibrum, 3.5m telescope seeing deteriorated. Ours went bad (frame 39, lambda 164 - end). The run was called bad. 02:20Z Switching to spectroscopy. 02:30Z Cart 9 plt 2045 mounted. Offsets were cleared after imaging, we had to use fk5 star. Focus sweep timed out on "the guider frame did not arrive". Next focus sweep was fine. Seeing is still bad and variable. Bruce shouldn't have come to the telescope when we had switched to imaging tonight - that must have decline our seeing :))). There is a big difference between b1 and b2 s/n. Probably Whopping fibers (plenty of warnings) are responsible for that. And since we didn't see any difference in s/n for b1 (low s/n) while increasing integration time, we decided to DECREASE integration time from 1500 down to 900. This way we'll be more efficient in accumulating S/N for b1, while b1 s/n will remain roughly the same. Unfortunately S/N for b1 has dropped below 2 on 15 minutes exposure :(. The exposure was declared bad and the integration time was increased up to 20 minutes, which seemed to work the best. Bummer, we didn't make it! even with 1200 sec integration time which at the similar conditions worked earlier. We think, that actual s/n for that plate is highier. At the moment we increased the integration time up to 30 minutes, declared 29797 exposure bad, but then we found out that even our last exposure was bad, please check on that plate, since these three "bad" exposures are very likely to be good (the efficiency meter showed that we should have done these exposures in 15 minutes). Here are the details: exposure#, b1/b2 s/n, integration time 29794 2.4/ 8.5 1200 29795 2.5/12.1 1500 29796 1.0/ 7.9 900 29797 0.9/ 9.8 1200 b2 has increased while b1 has decrased! 29798 1.1/12.9 1800 compare that with 29794 exposure. We decided to stop observing this plate without reaching the sos s/n of 15 in b1 till we learn more about what had happened. Connie and Brian were notified. 05:18Z Cart 3 plate 2049 mounted, stars on go to field with previous offests. We neede only one exposure to finish that plate. Done. 05:54Z Cart 4 plt 1932 on the telescope, the spiral pattern timed out (the frame did not arrived), next spiral pattern made it through. The fk5 star was found with offsets ~ -15, 10. Gcam frame again failed to arrive. Then offset command failed (3 times in a row) - probably the comand timed out, but we are not sure. The next time the offsets were applied correctly. The whole problems with finding the fk5 star was very likely due to a bad guider flat (remember red cirlces not covering properly the yellow spots?), so we took another one and the fiber centers were way off centers previously calculated by the first guider flat. Anyway the plate is done. 07:44Z cart 6 plt 2080 mounted, stars on gotoField. Plate done. The seeing got improved on the last plate. 08:55Z Switching to imaging. Stripe 23 S, run 5037. The ramp starts at lambda -66, frame 14. Seeing very good at frame 13. Skippy gave us nuError =-9.5". Science starts at lambda -64, frame 26. On frame ~125, lambda -49.4 thetaf has reached the limit. We corrected for that and growing nuError as well, then endDrifted the drift. We lost quite a bit time to confirm that we are in spec - Steph's astrom window did not respond quickly and we spent time on waiting for the answers we needed (tcc timed out). 10:35Z endDrift, run 5037 (we called ramps end on lambda -49.4, frame 125). To continue with the same stripe we backed up ~4 degrees and continued with the same stripe: 23 S. run 5038, good since frame 10, lambda -53.34 (ramp starts). Skippy in spec. Astronomical twilight reached at lambda -27.5, frame 182. Sky level at the moment on the chip 33 is below 19. By frame 194, lambda -25.8 sky level started to climb up and on chip 33 rised about one ADU, on chip 53 about 5 ADU (8 minutes in the twilight). 12:38Z run 5038 endDrifted. Frame 200, lambda -25 (rises in the sky counts on 53 and 33 chips were 12 and 3 ADU respectively). We called lambda -25.0 the end of the ramp and -27 end of the science. endNight is running while we are leaving. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End
