APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Thursday December 16, 2004 (MJD 53356) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Swing: Dan Long Night: John Barentine Scot Kleinman ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Humidity and winds kept us closed most of the night. A wind baffle that does not move in azimuth kept us from working once we did open. French has been contacted and a PR filed. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: ---------- No problems during checkout. Spectrograph focus needed to be adjusted for the significantly colder temperatures today compared to yesterday. Enclosure temperature -2.5C sp1 before after A -3300 -7302 B -5200 -9206 C -6000 -10000 sp2 A 9986 5985 B -8447 -12437 C -2212 -6212 Night: ------ High winds and humidity at the start of the night. Once the wind and humidity settled down enough to open, we discovered we could not move the telescope in azimuth. Rather, the telescope would move in azimuth and the wind bafle would either move only a bit or, most often, not at all. No slips were detected. We reset amps and the wind baffle knife switch to no avail. We checked the bump paddles and the telescope/wind baffle floor interface and found nothing wrong. The interlocks said our root problems were: wind_az*_fault wind_az_perm and didn't help at all. We did see several bumps in the murmur log, as expected when the 'scope slammed into the stationary wind baffle. The murmur log had repeated entries like: 2004-12-17 11:03:18Z sdssmcp SLC_DC dsc_E_trcErr Windscreen touched in azimuth: CCW 2004-12-17 11:03:18Z sdssmcp ampMgt dsc_E_trcErr MGT: bad az state ABORT_EVENT: ID_ERROR_LIMIT 2004-12-17 11:03:18Z sdssmcp ampMgt dsc_I_trcInfo Setting brake for axis azimuth 2004-12-17 11:03:18Z sdssmcp tBrakes dsc_I_trcInfo Taking axis azimuth out of closed loop The azimuth sumitomo things in the wind baffle control box were not lit. We could find no tripped interlocks, but then again, the interlocks display was not helpful in guiding us. The temperature was -7.5C. We talked to French and he could not immediately solve the problem, but promised the crew would get on it first thing in the morning. We ran endNight (successfully) and closed up for the night. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5074 22:34Z 22:50Z 100 O 133.62 137.55 40 ignore ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n): y QA Procedures Done (y/n): na UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 22:44 29893 2.1 arc 22:47 29894 2.1 arc 23:11 29895 2.1 arc 23:13 29896 2.1 arc 23:20 29897 10.0 flat 23:22 29898 2.0 arc ----- sequence 29899, plate -9999 ------- 00:16 29899 0.0 bias ----- sequence 29900, plate -9999 ------- 01:24 29900 0.0 bias ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL NONE Stays: JL NONE ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 22:44Z 21 17 28 68 (ENE) 218 - Blowing Snow 23:16Z 21 17 28 68 (ENE) 195 - Blowing Snow 23:47Z 20 18 29 72 (ENE) 194 - Blowing Snow 00:17Z 20 16 29 76 (ENE) 186 - Partly Cloudy 01:01Z 20 18 28 71 (ENE) 244 - 01:33Z 20 17 25 69 (ENE) 223 - 02:06Z 20 17 18 69 (ENE) 221 - 02:38Z 19 15 23 76 (ENE) 154 - 03:10Z 19 15 28 69 (ENE) 140 - 03:42Z 19 16 30 74 (ENE) 156 - 04:14Z 19 15 24 74 (ENE) 164 - 04:47Z 19 16 21 71 (ENE) 191 - 05:19Z 18 15 20 71 (ENE) 149 - 05:51Z 18 14 23 73 (ENE) 138 - 06:23Z 18 10 26 71 (ENE) 120 - 06:56Z 19 8 22 74 (ENE) 97 - 07:28Z 20 8 19 75 (ENE) 95 - 08:00Z 18 11 15 65 (ENE) 87 - 08:32Z 20 9 9 46 (NE) 91 - 09:09Z 19 7 19 70 (ENE) 66 - 09:41Z 21 2 17 66 (ENE) 24 - 10:13Z 21 5 4 186 (S) 65 - 10:45Z 22 1 1 45 (NE) 34 - 11:18Z 20 2 18 58 (ENE) 35 - ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- Doors open- fans on: :07:30Z Doors closed- fans off: 08:15Z Doors open- fans on: :09:45Z Enclosure off: ~10:15Z Enclsourfe on: ~11:15Z ---=== SOFTWARE USED ===--- IOP/SOP: v3_143_0 Watcher: MCP: v5_26_0 TPM: tpm_v2_46_0 AstroDa: v14_47 TCC: TCC 2.7.2.1 August 6 2004 sdssProcedures: v1_96 SoS: v4_10_7 hoggPT: v1_6_9 plate-mapper: v4_3_1 ---=== MIRROR NUMBERS ===--- PRIMARY: -------- Scale: 1.000000 MIGS TONIGHT NOMINAL Axial A 0.5630 0.5600 Axial B 0.5730 0.5720 Axial C 0.9330 0.9330 Trans D -8.1980 -8.1960 Lateral E 10.0584 10.0457 Lateral F 11.6205 11.6205 GALILS Commanded: 4300. -1900. 2850. -13300. -7600. -7650.
