APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Sunday January 9, 2005 (MJD 53380) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Mike Harvanek Steph Snedden ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Clouds, and two useful exposures, but no plates finished. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Swing: ------ Afternoon checkout was without problems. The spectrographs were a little out-of-focus, but it was quite warm (7.5 C). It was also quite overcast, so we opted to start ventilating the building, wait for cooler temps and do the spectro focus again, since we wouldn't be opening soon. Night: ----- Overcast, with a lot more clouds headed our way. Even the sucker holes had clouds. 06:00Z - Clouds thinned a bit, so we opened. 06:09Z Cartridge 7, plate 1933 Guide stars on goToField. Had to do a large scale change (.039), and we lost the guide stars. After the scale change, we went back to the field, but the guide stars were still not there (!). We needed an FK5 to get the field. It's as if the scale change left a mirror in not quite the right position and that shifted our pointing by about 7 asec. Of course, the clouds thickened a few minutes into the science exposure. There was no threat of rain, so we stayed open and tried periodically to catch some photons, but the gaps in the cloud cover were few and far between. We managed to get a few useful exposures, but the exposure times are not standard, since we ended the exposures during periods of thick cloud. Total exposure time: 1916 s, and the plate is not done. The night stayed warm, and we did not redo the spectro focus. SoS reported all values in spec, so we left it alone. 12:13Z Cartridge 8, plate 1621 Although it was still overcast, we mounted this cartridge in hopes of getting one good exposure before the end of the night. The plate already had (S/N)^2 of 10.8, so one good exposure could finish it. Just after 18 degree twilight, the clouds thinned a bit...but not enough to get an efficiency above 30%. No data. 13:05Z We closed. endNight -doSpectro -doTpm rejoiced. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5103 22:48Z 23:02Z 100 O 160.72 164.34 38 ignore ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n):y QA Procedures Done (y/n):y UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 30331, plate -9999 ------- 22:43 30331 0.0 bias ----- sequence 30332, plate 2062 ------- 23:31 30332 10.0 flat 23:34 30333 2.0 arc 23:37 30334 2.2 arc 23:40 30335 2.1 arc 00:11 30336 2.1 arc 00:14 30337 2.1 arc ----- sequence 30338, plate -9999 ------- 00:23 30338 0.0 bias ----- sequence 30339, plate 1933 ------- 06:19 30339 10.0 flat 06:21 30340 2.0 arc 06:48 30341 1200.1 target bad 07:39 30342 1200.1 target bad 08:25 30343 805.0 target 08:46 30344 1111.3 target 08:50 30345 10.0 flat 08:53 30346 2.0 arc ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Ooops..forgot. ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL8256 Stays: JL8257 ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 00:25Z 2 2062 1.00000 0 1257 0 121 30.4 7.2 11 282 ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 22:31Z 44 1 9 268 (W) -9999 - cloudy 23:03Z 44 1 11 273 (W) -9999 - " 23:34Z 44 0 12 283 (WNW) -9999 - " 00:07Z 45 0 13 280 (W) -9999 - " 00:39Z 44 0 14 274 (W) -9999 - " 01:12Z 44 1 13 272 (W) -9999 - " 01:44Z 45 4 11 267 (W) -9999 - " 02:16Z 45 5 10 264 (W) -9999 - " 02:48Z 44 4 12 236 (SW) -9999 - " 03:21Z 43 1 13 234 (SW) -9999 - " 03:53Z 44 4 10 267 (W) -9999 - " 04:25Z 44 1 8 242 (WSW) -9999 - " 04:57Z 43 1 10 267 (W) -9999 - " 05:30Z 44 6 7 272 (W) -9999 - " 06:02Z 43 6 7 270 (W) -9999 - " 06:34Z 44 6 9 274 (W) -9999 - " 07:04Z 44 7 10 268 (W) -9999 - " 07:35Z 44 6 8 264 (W) -9999 - " 08:05Z 44 7 12 294 (WNW) -9999 - " 08:36Z 43 8 7 278 (W) -9999 - " 09:07Z 43 10 6 270 (W) -9999 - " 09:38Z 44 8 8 284 (WNW) -9999 - " 10:08Z 44 8 8 285 (WNW) -9999 - " 10:38Z 44 7 8 268 (W) -9999 - " 11:08Z 44 6 9 270 (W) -9999 - " 11:38Z 44 6 10 267 (W) -9999 - " 12:09Z 45 6 7 259 (W) -9999 - " 12:39Z 45 6 10 261 (W) -9999 - " 13:09Z 45 7 8 263 (W) -9999 - " ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- 00:20Z Opened doors, started buiding ventilation. 06:00Z Opened enclosure 13:00Z Closed enclosure.
