APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Thursday January 27, 2005 (MJD 53398) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Atsuko Nitta Support: Jon Brinkmann Connie Rockosi ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Spectro monthly checkout and fiducial table building. ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- o specFlats -- When I checked the motor positions at the end, they were not where they were suppose to be. Since I had to try few times to start the sequence, maybe the motor positions changed every time I issued the failed specFlats. Could someone check to see if all is well ? If not, then I will take another sequence tomorrow. o The rest of the checkout went fine. o New fiducial tables (v1_37) are installed.Although ups lists the correct verion, fiducialVersion command in iop gives me "tag_name". I need to find out why this is tomorrow. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Monthly Checkout ==================== I arrived here around 20:30Z in the snow windy site (it was clear at my house). The weather is bad with snow and high himidity, so I cannot cool the enclosure. Since the telescope is still in the engCrew's hands, I start with non-telescope items. 21:03Z cleanupMurmur -- I did not want to reboot host, but thought it will be good to restart murmur server so that the murmur log for what I do today will be seperate from the bright time murmr log. 21:30Z Hercules's team is done with the telescope. So I start taking biases with spectro while I still work on the fiducial tables. 22:10Z Hercules placed two extra LN2 bottles in the enclosure. T=8C 22:18Z Started sequence of biases while I deal with alt table... There is only one alt fiducial crossing during the time the fiducial data were taken. It is not the MJD roll over issue. Especially since the other fiducial data taken AFTER alt data are all there in the same MJD file. Jon will have someone take a fresh alt data tomorrow morning. I will then make a new ALT table and check in all new tables. While taking 25 biases with spectro, I cleaned out disk space. The initNight bias is bad according to SoS. The reason is ABORT: More than 10% of the image is rejected as bad! Probably the work done by the engCrew on the actuator has left charges on the CCDs. The following biases are good. Manually inspected 30062 image (all 4 CCDs) and they looked good. The histogram also looked good. I am not quite sure exactly when this happened. :( But it was between 22:19:26Z -- 23:10:30Z. I moved the rotator to 45deg before doing the following. I also force filled the spectros while I was in the enclosure because I could. 23:58Z CCD left-to-right positin checks ================================== Sp1 ---- Coll_motor_A 0 Coll_motor_B 0 Coll_motor_C 0 required no changes Sp2 ----- Before: Coll_motor_A 5 Coll_motor_B -2 Coll_motor_C 0 Sp2 mechMoveColl 1000 1000 -1000 Coll_motor_A 1002 Coll_motor_B 1000 Coll_motor_C -1000 00:18Z Check wavelength coverage =================================== Sp1 required no changes. The flat images of b1 and r1 shows that fibers that are placed around column=1750-1770 is not getting much light. Although the number of fibers are acceptable (316 for b1 and 314 for r1), I thought I note this in the log. 00:50Z Collimate =================== Sp1 ---- Before: Coll_motor_A 0 Coll_motor_B 0 Coll_motor_C 0 mechPiston 4564 Coll_motor_A 4564 Coll_motor_B 4564 Coll_motor_C 4562 Sp2 ---- Before: Coll_motor_A 2503 Coll_motor_B -494 Coll_motor_C -1000 mechPiston 2788 Coll_motor_A 5290 Coll_motor_B 2299 Coll_motor_C 1788 Both red cameras are in focus. Meant to do this earlier when I saw the blue screen, but kept forgetting to reboot. Note that although the DA cannot display the images on the monitor, it had no affect on taking exposures. As instructed in folklore, I took two biases and restarted the servers after rebooting the crate. The second bias that I took to fix the exposure number mismatch scrolled the message: You can: 1. So decided to restart sop. Restarting did not help. I was able to take a bias exposure, but could not do specFlat due to the goStare failure. The servers are all up, ptvmeTest on the spectro node did not show anything wrong. I tried taking more biases, but that no longer worked either. The camera is scrolling. mechSend shows that the camera does not have its shutter open. So I guess that is good. The bottom line is that I am lost. I cry Connie. Connie tells me that the "not scanning" means "cannot talk to camera". So the answer is to drop and regrab the instruments. The next bias followed by a flat exposure worked. yeahhh. 02:38Z Happily I start "specFlats". Did the failed goSpec change the positions of the motors? THe flats have some yellow numbers (in nfibers) and the last arc has red in the nlaps for the red cameras which is probably due to the lamps being on too long. mechMoveColl 400 400 -400 for both spectros were applied. I checked 53390 and 53391, but did not check 53389. The new tables were installed (v1_37). The whiteboard is updated. After installing the new table, I rebooted mcp to make sure it reads the new table. I then found that fiducialsVersion in iop does not give me the right version of the fiducials. It just says "tag_name". So I rebooted MCP again (this time hard reboot). But I still could not get fiducialsVersion to give the right version name (v1_37). ups list gives me the correct version number though. I will find out what is wrong tomorrow. endNight finished happily. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n):y QA Procedures Done (y/n):y UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 30661, plate -9999 ------- BAD 21:47 30661 0.0 bias ----- sequence 30662, plate 2050 ------- 22:19 30662 0.0 bias Start of the 25 biases. 22:22 30663 0.0 bias 22:24 30664 0.0 bias 22:26 30665 0.0 bias 22:28 30666 0.0 bias 22:30 30667 0.0 bias 22:32 30668 0.0 bias 22:34 30669 0.0 bias 22:36 30670 0.0 bias 22:38 30671 0.0 bias 22:40 30672 0.0 bias 22:42 30673 0.0 bias 22:44 30674 0.0 bias 22:47 30675 0.0 bias 22:49 30676 0.0 bias 22:51 30677 0.0 bias 22:53 30678 0.0 bias 22:55 30679 0.0 bias 22:57 30680 0.0 bias 22:59 30681 0.0 bias 23:01 30682 0.0 bias 23:03 30683 0.0 bias 23:05 30684 0.0 bias 23:07 30685 0.0 bias 23:09 30686 0.0 bias 23:59 30687 10.0 flat Checking positions of the CCDs 00:12 30688 10.0 flat 00:20 30689 2.0 arc Checking wavelength coverages 00:35 30690 2.0 arc 00:50 30691 2.1 arc Checking collimation 00:53 30692 2.1 arc 01:10 30693 2.1 arc 01:12 30694 2.1 arc 01:30 30695 2.1 arc 01:33 30696 2.1 arc ----- sequence 30697, plate -9999 ------- 01:43 30697 0.0 bias first bias after sp crate reboot BAD 01:48 30699 0.0 bias second bias after sp crate reboot BAD ----- sequence 30700, plate -9999 ------- 02:06 30700 0.0 bias ----- sequence 30701, plate 2050 ------- 02:31 30701 0.0 bias 02:35 30702 10.0 flat specFlat series (7xflat,2xarc) starts here. 02:41 30703 10.0 flat 02:45 30704 10.0 flat 02:49 30705 10.0 flat 02:53 30706 10.0 flat 02:57 30707 10.0 flat 03:01 30708 10.0 flat 03:05 30709 10.0 flat 03:09 30710 2.0 arc 03:11 30711 2.0 arc 03:59 30712 2.0 dark 04:16 30713 2.0 dark 04:34 30714 2.0 dark ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL8299 Stays: JL8300 ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 02:17Z 7 2050 1.00000 0 -67 0 121 30.4 -2.2 13 270 ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 21:05Z 29 28 14 267 (W) -9999 - 21:37Z 28 28 8 263 (W) -9999 - 22:09Z 29 30 13 279 (W) -9999 - 22:41Z 30 30 14 265 (W) -9999 - 23:14Z 30 30 21 265 (W) -9999 - 23:46Z 30 30 18 289 (WNW) -9999 - 00:17Z 30 30 17 255 (WSW) -9999 - 00:47Z 30 30 18 248 (WSW) -9999 - 01:18Z 30 29 14 252 (WSW) -9999 - 01:49Z 29 29 14 262 (W) -9999 - 02:20Z 28 27 16 270 (W) -9999 - 02:53Z 27 26 14 275 (W) -9999 - 03:24Z 27 26 16 274 (W) -9999 - 03:58Z 26 26 13 281 (W) -9999 - 04:30Z 26 25 15 294 (WNW) -9999 - 05:03Z 25 24 14 287 (WNW) -9999 - ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- Telescope at stow with cart 7 and sp autofill connected.
